Title: What font is the B in the Bitcoin symbol? Not the lines just the B.
Post by: NomadTheSavior on April 14, 2023, 08:13:48 PM
I'm talking about the B here:https://i.imgur.com/TMnBPJx.png
And the same B here:https://i.imgur.com/jEE1Oo2.png

I was wondering what the font used for the B in the Bitcoin symbol and logo is. I'm not talking about the lines in the symbol just the B itself. So what font is the B?

Also I'm not talking about the the logo where the bitcoin word is spelled out. I'm talking specifically about the solo B in the bitcoin symbol and logo.

I haven't seen the font used in the B discussed anywhere and lately I've really been wondering what specific font was used to create it. So if anyone knows the font of the B in the Bitcoin symbol/logo please let me know.

unfortunately that's wrong. Ubuntu Bold Italic is the name of the font in the logo were the word bitcoin is spelled out. Ubuntu Bold Italic is the font used in that whole word. but Like I said I'm asking about the font in the Bitcoin B symbol/logo not the font in the word bitcoin spelled out. I'm asking specifically what's the font of the individual solo B in the bitcoin symbol and logo.

The logo has been designed by the forum user bitboy and you can visit the following topic for more information about it.
Bitcoin Graphics in Vector Format (Illustrator) (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=1631)

For those interested, the font used here for Bitcoin is called Ubuntu. Which you can find out more over here -
http://font.ubuntu.com/ (http://font.ubuntu.com/)

I'm already well versed on the history of the bitcoin logo and who created it. I'm asking specifically what font the B is in because I haven't seen that specified anywhere. I'm trying to find out what font the B used to make the logo is.

no normal font has the B with double vertical strike through

it was made by using adobe photoshop as a image using probably a font like 'emboldened and widened clarendon' then added the vertical strikes

im not saying it is clarendon. im saying is a basic font like that, that was then photo edited

I know that no regular font has a B with double vertical strikes, that's why in my OP I said "I'm not talking about the lines in the symbol just the B itself.

I agree a basic font was probably used and then the letter was edited and had the lines added to it. That's why I'm asking what specific font was used if anyone knows. My goal is to figure out what specific font they started with to type the B as the basis for the symbol/logo.

Some in-depth information about Bitcoin logo stated that the B logo uses a trebuchet font

Quote
Font
The letter “B” is written with the Trebuchet font. Wilson admitted that he had always liked that word and how it was used in the “Microsoft Age of Empires” video game. On top of that, a sans serif font is an ideal solution for digital use.

@OP here is the link the deeply detailed the creation of the Bitcoin Logo : https://www.zenbusiness.com/blog/bitcoin-logo/#3 I hope you find it helpful.

The "B" in the Bitcoin symbol is not a standard font (regardless of the vertical lines), as the symbol was designed specifically for the Bitcoin currency.

My best guess is that the designer used HelveticaNeue Bold (https://freefonts.co/fonts/helveticaneue-bold) as a starting point and then modified the symbol using a vector program, such as Adobe Illustrator, to achieve the final design we recognize today.

Why should you be so concerned with the font used in the bitcoin symbol or logo this much, anyone can improvise on that by giving a capital letter B a double strike through to symbolize the logo, this is how everyone uses it, you can make it in any format or desired design base on preference, come to think of this that once what you are making is not in line or tally with this usual logo, then it may not be acceptable for bitcoin logo when you designed yours.

Thanks for the reply. I asked this question on reddit as well and someone linked me to the article https://bitcoinmagazine.com/culture/the-history-and-symbolism-behind-bitcoins-logo which led me to Phil Wilsons medium article https://medium.com/@_Phil_Wilson_/bitcoin-symbol-and-logo-origins-5d428d40380 where he claimed he was involved with the creation of all the bitcoin symbol/logos or at least sending the instructions for how they should be created.

But now I'm wondering if there's any verification that Phil Wilson was actually involved in the creation of the Bitcoin B logo. He also claims to be Satoshi or more specifically part of a group that he says is called Satoshi so that may put his claim of being involved in the creation of the logo in some doubt.

Since I started trying to find out what font was used I came across some person claiming to have involvement in the creation of the logo. I asked the question about the font on reddit and other sites as well and a lot of people link me to stuff from this guy called Phil Lawson who claims to have been involved in the creation of the logo. He also claims to be satoshi and he says Bitboy was working with him when the logo was created. He claims to have been involved in the creation of the first logos and then sent Bitboy instructions on how the modern orange Bitcoin logo should be created.

He says trebuchet font was used as the font for the B and or the font for the dollar sign lines on the B. It seems I'm going down a rabbit hole now  :D bitcoin magazine posted an article saying he was involved in the creation of the logo https://bitcoinmagazine.com/culture/the-history-and-symbolism-behind-bitcoins-logo and he has his own medium article about the logo here http://vu.hn/bitcoin-symbol-and-logo-origin.html#the-symbol-workspace-with-images as well as his own website where he talks about how the logo was created http://vu.hn/bitcoin-symbol-and-logo-origin.html#the-symbol-workspace-with-images. On that website he also claims to be satoshi or more specifically part of a group that's called satoshi which created Bitcoin. It's really a bit much and I don't believe he's satoshi. But a lot of people are posting his info as a source on how the bitcoin logo was made so is there any verification Phil Wilson aka "Scronty" (his online username) created the Bitcoin logo or had any involvement in its creation?

He claims to be the one who instructed bitboy for the logo layout and more, yet bitboy doesn't mentioned him or someone helping him on the thread he made for at least like a contribution to his work. Although what he mentioned in medium are all well-detailed but still i doubt until he shows proof of their conversation.

Yes the whole thing seems kind of odd, I reached out to him on reddit so I'll see what he says.

clarendon (URW/ EW).. as already said looks closer to the one in the logo... much closer than your other topic where you think its trebuchet

If he claims to be Satoshi, I think we can safely assume he is lying about other things as well.  :D

I was previously unaware of another significant detail regarding the widely-used and well-known logo associated with Bitcoin (it is worth noting that there is no official Bitcoin logo). The BTC symbol in the orange circle commonly used today was proposed by bitboy (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=1631). However, it was originally introduced by Satoshi in a thread (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=64.0) discussing new icon/logo for Bitcoin wallet. bitboy's version of the logo come eight months later.

Unfortunately, the original images are no longer available on the forum, but we can view the thread archive here: http://web.archive.org/web/20130524055823/https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=64.0

It is the same icon/logo that is shown on wikipedia: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bitcoin#/media/File:Bitcoin.png

Many similar fonts out there you can fund like Avenir Heavy, but it doesn't matter what font you use, because as far as I know, it's just a symbol to just easily remembered, and maybe to more loyalty. And, I am just curious, why do you ask this? are you want make a logo similar like bitcoin?. or for commercial?, because as far I know, bitcoin logo is trademark and protected by the Creative Commons license, but you can use it for free, commercial and personal use.

B <- rockwell bold  or clarendon is closer than

v avenir v
B

as for the bitboy stuff..
no bitboy is not satoshi and bitboy didnt invent the BTC he just updated it by changing the gold circle to orange..
and making the font white instead of black   BTC   ..  but the BTC itself was made by satoshi not bitboy

bitboy is currently trying to make a name for himself as a influential influencer.. so you can see why he would want to exaggerate his involvement

yes he deserves praise for how popular his orange circle became. but he was not involved in the font design/selection

If anyone wishes to get names of fonts close to the one that was modified on the bitcoin logo, there is an application for designers that can be used to detect a font used in a design they may want to replicate.

I use it on my android device and this is a link to the app on the Google Play store.  Whatthefont  (https://www.google.com/url?sa=t&source=web&rct=j&url=https://play.google.com/store/apps/details%3Fid%3Dcom.monotype.whatthefont%26hl%3Den%26gl%3DUS%26referrer%3Dutm_source%253Dgoogle%2526utm_medium%253Dorganic%2526utm_term%253Dwhatthefont%26pcampaignid%3DAPPU_1_x5s7ZLXYHpn97_UPyeaj4AY&ved=2ahUKEwj114Pu6K3-AhWZ_rsIHUnzCGwQ5YQBegQIBxAC&usg=AOvVaw2LohG82PfmvuhvptKsPz8x)

IOS users can check to see if it is available to them too.

To find out a list of font that look like that on the bitcoin logo, you have to undo the modifications on the logo to just the letter "B", take a picture of the "B" you have modified with the application on your phone and search on the application. A list of names of similar font will pop up.

I think that the only way to find it out is to open MS Word and type B's in all the font styles, it will surely appear after several attempts... The other way to do it is to type several N-containing words, and then try several font types... I haven't thought about it :)
