Title: Beware of crypto scam
Post by: knowngunman on April 15, 2023, 05:41:57 AM
I greet una my fellow 9ja people. I Wan offer my little advice and tips on how not to fall victim for scammers. Crypto Don dey among the hot cake for 9ja now wey everybody dey rush into but sadly na so scammers dey use that opportunity dey take rip off crypto lovers wey never get experience.
I wan share some few tips on crypto scam and how to avoid them.
First and foremost, take your own time do research on crypto before you begin. No just rush into it because you see people making it from it.
Secondly, scammers make use of fake project and team in order to scam people of their hard earned money in the name of IDO, Private sale etc and promise to list 10x in reputable exchanges just to attract victims. Don't fall for it. If it's too good to be true, it's probably a scam.

Another method of crypto scam na airdrop. Airdrop dey pay before but it's most likely an avenue to scam now. Run away from any airdrop that request for your seeds phrases or private keys to participate.

And again, crypto no be ponzi where you invest and expect high return within a specify time. Anybody that promises you investment with high return in crypto is a scammer and you should stay away from such person.

Phishing link too dey among the method wey dem dey use scam now. Most of them go send link give u through your social media or ur email, they go tell you make you enter the link and input your details for the link wey dem send. All na lie and trap to steal your coins. Nodey even click on the link you receive from strangers. Some will ask you to connect your wallet address to some websites, no try am dey just wan steal coins wey you get for your wallet.

Last but not least, keep your assets safe and never share your private keys with anyone or any websites offline and online. Also, use stronger passwords for any of your wallet and remember to keep them safe.

Make we all be guided!

First and foremost, take your own time do research on crypto before you begin.
But to strictly research on bitcoin and crypto scam and know how to avoid them is most important. Also being active on forums, like Bitcointalk would help as you will see many members exposing and bringing up about scam discussion and ways to avoid.

Run away from any airdrop that request for your seeds phrases or private keys to participate.
Some can ask for fee or certain amount of money to be paid before releasing the airdrop, it is a scam.
Also to be careful of phishing attacks. Avoiding KYC airdrops. Although experienced people are able to spot phishing attack easily.

And again, crypto no be ponzi where you invest and expect high return within a specify time. Anybody that promises you investment with high return in crypto is a scammer and you should stay away from such person.
There are some ponzi scheme, and pump and dump crypto projects.
Avoid strangers generally. Also know that a stranger may lure your friend or family member and the person may indirectly introduce you to scam.

Phishing link too dey among the method wey dem dey use scam now.
This is very important, to avoid phishing attempt. It can be through email, text message, social media, online sites or even through call. They are easy to know but newbies fall for it.

True, the major why you will see people still investing in a project after some red flags has been detected is because of FOMO, and that has also made newbies and even some veteran limit how indepth they do their research.

First, I go like thank you for bringing this for the notice of people wey dey new to crypto here. This airdrop scams dey come in different format. I remember some years ago when I bin dey really new to crypto and the organisers of the project come dey demand for ETH to use as gas to send their token to airdrop participants, many persons fell for it. Las las after everything dem send the worthless token and abandoned the group.

Phishing link too dey among the method wey dem dey use scam now. Most of them go send link give u through your social media or ur email, they go tell you make you enter the link and input your details for the link wey dem send. Phishing links na something wey we suppose dey careful of. Make we no dey click anyhow links. Sometimes this scammers go clone a particular website and send you juicy promos or offers wey dey very tempting. Make we no allow greed to allow us make costly mistakes. Make we dey try to always dey the right project groups and get information from the right sources.

Avoiding strangers and strange messages through email and SMS will help one a lot to stay out of scammers, this will enable you escape their phishing strategy. Recently, I saw a link sent to me by SMS,and I was like which link is this,I remembered the advice on forum here about scammers. Immediately, I deleted it. One of the most common phishing scam in Nigeria is done in WhatsApp and that is Sporty bet adder, any investment or update from an unknown person from WhatsApp are scam. WhatsApp has been the most common social media for scam in Nigeria lately but is only greedy Nigerians that would fall like the WhatsApp TV that would post send 5k to get 10k.
Lastly, never try buying cryptocurrency or anything from those WhatsApp vendors if you don't really know them.

Not only strangers but also cross-check links sent to you by people you know might even be one of your relatives because you never can tell if their account was hacked or not so to stay safe just go through the link if it's a counterfeit then avoid clicking it or if you feel the need to reach out to the person through a phone call to confirmed if they were the ones that sent you the link and if it turns out that it wasn't them then you can also inform others to stay clear from messages sent by that account.
Remember; hackers can attack at any time so you should never let down your guard.

You are right. Sometimes it might be from friends and family members. That was how a friend of mine unknowingly sent me a phishing link on Whatsapp to register for Npower. I quickly noticed it, drew his attention to it and asked him to delete the message from the DMs of the persons he has sent it to and also warn them not to click the link.

Even if I this post be like remake of one wey we don see for this forum before, e still no take away the warning and message wey e carry.
My question is this, what if the link asked to click on is from a friend asking for you to register on a site? How do I confirm if the site is legit and not for scam purposes?

I have thought of using a separate mail address from my Binance apps and other crypto apps I use, but I fear if the email can be coined and remodelled to penetrate my accounts.

Thanks op your tips and guildlines are really helpful, I must confess anyone that reads and abides by this tips might never fall a victim of scam,
But I must add this in as much as we need to keep our passwords and other personal important details secret, but we should try to speak to members we trust about any link been sent concerning crypto, ask questions about anything we don't understand, not everything should be kept a secret because it's not every link or everyone on crypto that's a scammer, some link might be real and some people are real too, that's my little advice, ask questions make thorough investigations before conclusion, don't miss good opportunities just because you are scared of scammers..

This happens even to people who have previously invested in cryptocurrency if they do not conduct adequate research on the project team, their road map, and their genuity. Just because some projects do more than 10x as soon as they are listed does not mean that others will also have such pumps if it is a legit project, while some projects are fake, they are only there to get the early investor's money and move on, we need to be very careful on the projects we invest in.

Airdrops na one of the easy way for scammers to get people wey dem go scam because we too like free things, na why scammers they use the airdrop to get some of our vital information to do their job.
Most times, people go tell you say them make am through Airdrops which is a past glory because 99% of Airdrops now no de pay, instead they waste your time and still look for way to scam you join.

These are very good points you listed above mate on the basic tips how to identify a crypto scam, and I think this should be a must read for all crypto newbies on and off this forum, as it acts as a guide on how to staying safe and not losing our money to scammers. Because one thing about scammers is that just as the day goes by so are they improving on their scamming method to be able to successfully scam people off their funds, and that's why we crypto users need to take proactive means so as to protect our funds and invest only in Bitcoin and no other cryptocurrencies that may seem very promising at it's early stage.

In some cases like this one, some projects go ask you to connect your wallet to some kind of site they created for you to redeem rewards or get your coins. Don’t connect your wallet to any site that is not reputable, even though they attract you with good offers. It’s very dangerous and you might lose all your coins in that wallet.

Cryptocurrency is not a Ponzi scheme and getting high return on investment is not guaranteed by anyone, not even the system that designs it. If you invest into it, is as though you’ve made up your mind to face the outcome of the investment whether profit or loss.

Already we knows how the industry looks like,  is not like any other place where your investment is guaranteed or secured because investment that follows with cryptocurrency is pron to a higher risk why because there's no one or institution that could stand for your investment. Then I would love to say we should try our best abstain from over hyped projects they mostly comes with scamming intentions or even wanting to lure more investor of borrowing money to invest in their project due to fake promises, the only way to invest is just go directly to one of the reputable exchange and pick any coin you know that worth investing than just wasting our resources in the name of joining the early bids.

As an investor whether a newbie or not you should know that the first thing you do upon investing in a project is to do a research on that project to know the team behind the project not just the team, finding out if truly the team they claim to be are genuine or aware of the project just as you have said that most of the team members are just fabricated to get at unsuspecting participants to scam.

Connecting of your wallet to a site which you have no knowledge about is dependent of you. If you choose to connect the wallet with your funds then it is left for you because as a smart investors you should know that creating a fresh new wallet should be the option.

Crypto scammers have used airdrops to scam people in the past, and at times it really occurred that a lot of crypto users fell victims to those scams. First, they airdrop some fake tokens into people's wallets, and any time you try to connect your wallet to their DEX and swap those coins, they will steal all the valuable coins you have in your wallet. This method of scamming has been so obvious that many people are not easily falling victims now.

Some other scams that have been used in the past include the "free claim scam". Then, you will need to pay a small gas fee in BNB or ETH to claim those tokens. You can pay like $1 or $0.5 in ETH or BNB to claim like 200,000 of those shitcoins, and at the end of the day, they don't list those coins. I don't know if it's still going on this time around because, for a long time now, I have not been paying attention to altcoins and ICOs. So, guys, you should also look out for such scams.

As telegram scams no be only crypto scammers dey there, dem get so many line of scammers for that platform and every one using it is a potential target so be very careful with this platform.

Telegram has been the home of scammers for a very long time, once i see any messages coming from unknown people the only thing  i do is report and block,  have not experienced any scam from Facebook, but the most annoying one is that of telegram, popular stories they come up with is just to lame how do you  come with stories of making  a huge profit and the start showing you evidence and trying to convince you even trying to call you to make it real, and some scammers use to act like support and use it as a tool to have access to people's wallet we should always be conscious.
