Title: Can BTC or crypto users play politics in Nigeria?
Post by: Zanab247 on June 27, 2023, 07:46:05 PM
We all no that BTC and crypto is illegal in our country, but d government came too late to stop us not to have access to BTC or crypto in d land, and many youths in d country has discovered so many positive things that can help d government to reduce unemployment and also reduce bank stress in the country, if dey will allow BTC or crypto users in  some political office. Like what I was told about Nigerian politics, anyone that have huge amount of money and influence always have a good chance to win any political office in Nigeria. but BTC and crypto users have the money or influence for some local political office like councilor position, chairman position, state political office like governor, house of assembly, and federal political office like president, senator and house of representatives, my question is this, can BTC or crypto users play politics in Nigeria by coming out for councilor or other political office and he or she is well know as BTC or crypto users? I see some of our crypto and BTC users here, and dey have the knowledge to function in some political office if such opportunity is be offer or aquire by money or influence.
What is your opinion.

Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies are not banned by our government, only CBN ban cryptocurrencies.

As time goes on, there will definitely be some crypto users that would hold public offices in Nigeria. Everything will happen naturally like evolution.

For now, since CBN has tagged Bitcoin and Cryptocurrency activities as illegal, we have no choice but to wait for Federal government considerations since the current president promised us good news about Bitcoin and blockchain technology during his campaign, but if he does as others have done by failing his promises, then that’s when the youth will plan on taking some positions because I am sure we have youths here that love politics.

Taking some lower positions in politics will not be enough to change any process or bring in Bitcoin, but it will surely increase the awareness and the adoption in our locality.

Btc might be illegal in our country like you said but that shouldn't stop crypto users to participate in politics or aspire for political positions, contesting for a position is a thing of choice and no true citizen is deprived of such so far you meet up the requirements for such position and have the  support and funds to pursue your aspiration. However there are many crypto whales capable of challenging most of the high ranking politicians for their office and money won't be an issues to them cause the have lots of funds stored in cryptocurrencies.

However asides from the high level of corruption in our government Nigeria @ 62 have gone beyond that stage where politician with greater wealth stand a high chance of winning, we've failed to practice the Democratic system of government of the people for the peope and by the people and gone to a point where democracy is now for the rich alone where, the rich use their wealth to pay and bribe their way into government positions just to loot the nations treasury and make themselves richer, a time shall come when the sons of a nobody would become somebody and hold high positions in the government sector, that's what we all hope for, only time will tell.

There's nothing bad in having a combination of more than one source of income as profession, being a politician, you can decided to also be a cryptopreneur as long as you can be able to cope with the combination of them all and none is being affected for each other, you also have to consider the requirements of being a politician and the conditions attached, the government policies and regulations in this, and how people have been seen this as an enabling achievement they can go about doing to make a living in that same environment you lived in.

In Nigeria, things goes easily underground, because these popular politicians have bitcoin in their wallets and they're not the ones control it themselves, rather a third party is there to foreseen the entire operation and take full responsibility for every single trades. Ofcourse the standard of been a crypto investor and also a politician, although it depends on the laws in that particular country in question, because not all country permits the regulation of crypto activities, it remained banned and if a politician got caught up in all of this, he might lose his position as governmental body, that doesn't sound right.

We all no that BTC and crypto is illegal in our country,
Bitcoin no dey illegal for dis country ooo, if government see bitcoin for your wallet dey no go talk anything but make sure say bitcoin transactions no dey connected to your bank account, na central bank of Nigeria direct all commercial banks make dem ban accounts wey dey linked to crypto transactions, but if anybody see bitcoin for your wallet e no mean say you don do anything bad.

but d government came too late to stop us not to have access to BTC or crypto in d land, and many youths in d country has discovered so many positive things that can help d government to reduce unemployment and also reduce bank stress in the country, if dey will allow BTC or crypto users in  some political office.
Plenty politicians get bitcoin for their wallet now but you no go just know, most of them get people wey dey manage their crypto portfolio for them and they go dey pay d person, dey get dis former senator for kogi state wey dey commot for governor now (senator Deno melaye) him don talk am for public before say him dey into cryptocurrency and him dey make nonsense money for cryptocurrency.

my question is this, can BTC or crypto users play politics in Nigeria by coming out for councilor or other political office and he or she is well know as BTC or crypto users? I see some of our crypto and BTC users here, and dey have the knowledge to function in some political office if such opportunity is be offer or aquire by money or influence.

Why not anybody can contest for any political party now nobody go stop you, and I dey sure say most of the young guys wey dey join politics now dey into cryptocurrency, if you dey into bitcoin and you get your money wey u go spend if you wan commot for post, then nobody go stop you now.

Crypto/Bitcoin no dey illegal for Nigeria, e no get when our government ban crypto, the only thing wey dem do be say you no go fit buy crypto directly on exchanges through your Nigerian bank, but wahala no dey because ever since them implement am, Nigerians come dey buy crypto wella through peer to peer.

Back to your topic so, wetin make you feel say some Nigerians wey hold political positions no dey into crypto, dem no go come tell you na, though e go make sense if Naija go get politicians wey go dey openly in support of Bitcoin and crypto, e go fit help to dey attract policies wey go favor crypto growth and adoption.

Politics for we country na dirty game, abi you no know?
It might not be shedding blood persay as you might think, it could be digging up dirt concerning ones source of income, scrutiny into your investments and all else.

Users can play, but it might be questionable if you declare it is from crypto currency you earn.
No matter how much crypto is justified in the eyes of many who understand it, your reputation from colleagues who have had dealings with you or worked with you at some point, will attest more to and be a contributing factor to your political success, not whether you use crypto or not.

One among the tenets of governance is to ensure that the cultural aspect and principles of our fore fathers as regards means of livelihood, standards to meet before belonging to a political party, will always require that one must have contributed to the growth of society by working and earning,  among others.

OP, I believe we are all in the same country but I was wondering too when the ban on btc and crypto was placed because to the best of my knowledge, CBN only restricted the banks from carrying out bitcoin and crypto related transaction. Anything that has to be passed into law must be delebrated by the national assembly before it is passed into law for further action as the case may be but i have not heard any law of that nature. Can you please give us the source to that update let us know.

For sure Nigeria politics is all about who get the funds to push for electioneering process and not about the character of individual that is why we find ourselves were we are today. I am not surprised that our politicians are fully into crypto but are not coming forth to say it publicly and this might be the reasons why they kicked against anything that would attack the existence of bitcoin in Nigeria. So far there are many crypto enthusiast in politics, some are even sponsors while some are contestant, some are appointees, etc depending on how the connect is.

In essence, as a smart Nigerian, you have to play safe and be on low keys although btc is not illegal in Nigeria but the ignorant agencies are out to get their own share of the cake without minding the law. Wisdom is profitable to direct.

There is no law stopping politicians from being involved in cryptocurrency.  As a matter of fact, many of them are actively involved in cryptocurrency.  I wouldn't be surprised if crypto is one of their means of hiding funds.

During the time former president Buhari banned Twitter, the then Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami deactivated his Twitter account and shared the screenshot. Unfortunately for him, people noticed he uses Latoken exchange... as captured in this article : https://www.lindaikejisblog.com/2021/6/reno-omokri-calls-out-agf-abubakar-malami-alleges-cryptocurrency-trading-and-use-of-vpn-which-is-banned-in-the-country.html .

So, obviously, many top ranking politicians uses crypto and there is no law against them.

Bitcoin users are not higher or lesser citizens in Nigeria and there is no where anyone aspiring to fit into any of the positions you listed above will declare whether they save their money or use fiat or Bitcoin.
In the other hand, Bitcoin dealers do not go around boasting that they are Bitcoin dealers. How then will you be able to identify who is a Bitcoin user or not.

Meanwhile, the Federal government has not banned Bitcoin usage in Nigeria, it is only the central bank that prohibits it's transactions with banks. That is the situation and not outright ban.

A funny country indeed, well am not surprise to see such because that is Nigeria for you and he is not the only one like you said who is using crypto and I believe many other politician are also involved because they know the benefit in using crypto as they can use it as a means of embezzling huge amount of cash for their selfish purposes.

I must say this that anyone who is able to combine cryptocurrency with politics in a country is really trying well and deserves a kudos, because the two are very demanding and challenging to handle and it takes someone who must have been very versatile to be able to make a blend of them altogether, this same thing is not only common to your country alone but i think it's what is being applicable on others as well.

I don't think we have politicians who dey crypto in the political positions, assume we have such in the house of assembly or Senate , he or she  suppose stand against d banned of BTC and crypto in Nigeria in a way crypto users will understand that we have some one or people in the political office.

OP all that no be problem. Nigeria no dey exist for vacuum na people be Nigeria, even some politicians wey know how far dey run the crypto package. The government go only regulate the exchanges if dey want like them don dey put eyes for binance now. Some men no dey hide am say dem be cryptocurrency analyst so those people self na public figure. Me I don listen to so many like that wey dey analyse for channels television.

As time goes on, there will definitely be some crypto users that would hold public offices in Nigeria. Everything will happen naturally like evolution.

No cause for alarm for wetin op dey ask my guy. Things dey happen naturally only if you dey ready to grab am. You must live ready for time to come meet you. Anybody wey dey inside crypto runs fit aspire for any political position for the country, in fact e go even make sense self so that those people go follow liberalize the system for me. This one wey CBN dey do with account wey dey with binance no go dey happen.

I believe say some public office holders dey do bitcoin and other crypto, but dem de code am, but hopefully we go soon get brave people among dem wey go come out openly and profess di benefits. Last last, I no even understand why person go de do legitimate business and im go still decode am.

My first question for OP is that how would you know a crypto user and a non crypto user because coins no dey shout ? Is like you no know the country wey you dey say everybody dey desperate to get cash even the so called politicians wet you dey talk about. Na only Emefiele banned bitcoin and not politicians,I believe say most of those politicians na even whales for bitcoin coded but you no go know, because bitcoin get privacy wey go make people no fit know who get or who dey use am if you no tell them. You know read for internet wet them say some politicians like Dino Malaye dey go hang out with Hushpoppy for SA,and Hushpoppy dey into crypto. If you think say crypto user go enter politics later na lie, them already dey into am and them dey secretly hide their funds for bitcion. Abi you think say them no dey read news, all those things na him make Emefiele banned crypto to make them loose hope but him plan fail. If police or EFCC catch you say you dey use crypto then make u know say them want their own share of your funds because them go first think say you be yahoo boy as you dey into digital currency. The point be say na their own share them want since poor man wet never chop belle full no go buy crypto.

That our politicians don't come out openly to speak about Bitcoin, that doesn't mean they don't own it, or using it for cross border transactions, but they just decided to do it on a low key, but as time goes on we are sure to have knowledgeable crypto youths into the political space to speak on behalf of it's wide range usage and legalization, because I just came across this article below which after CBN banned Bitcoin, the Senate summoned CBN and a senator from Lagos spoke in support of Bitcoin, which shows that they are actually some politicians who know about Bitcoin and understand how it works.
Quote
Contributing to the debate on the motion, Solomon Adeola, senator representing Lagos west, said he is against the outright ban of cryptocurrency.

“I am strongly against the outright ban of this medium of exchange by the CBN,” the senator said.

“What the CBN should be telling Nigerians are the regulations put in place to regulate the activities of the operators.”

Opposing Adeola’s submission, Sani Musa, senator representing Niger east, said cryptocurrency has made the naira “almost useless or valueless”.

The world is evolving and we see changes everyday. Very soon, people with such big knowledge of bitcoin and blockchain technology will only be the person the people will want him to represent them in political offices or position. The government haven’t banned the operation of cryptocurrency in the country, so there’s a good chance of it happening soon.

Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies are not banned by our government, only CBN ban cryptocurrencies.

As time goes on, there will definitely be some crypto users that would hold public offices in Nigeria. Everything will happen naturally like evolution.

Even after the ban on cryptocurrencies by the CBN, some of their staffs still engage in cryptocurrency and they’re doing great in it. They’ve found the potential in it and can’t allow the restrictions by CBN stop them from investing in bitcoin.

Like you talk about Crypto enthusiast dey into political offices, I strongly believe say the process don even begin sef. Why I dey talk so na because our national assembly dey really put Crypto talk well for their talk agenda and Dem no gree to ban am even when cbn governor talk anyhow about am them tell make him come defend himself. So this one make me believe say we already get leaders wey dey into Crypto for the political leadership matter for our country.

God question, but I think we had one of the worse government in our countries history and all they successfully did in their regime was to make life more difficult for citizens, the government had lots of serious matters on their hands but rather they faced Bitcoin and felt that they could stop the growth of crypto-currency in the country but as we could see it the lost.

Well I don't think it's a full ban on crypto from the previous government but regardless the current government has promised to support the growth of crypto-currency in the country so let's see how they do.

You tok am di truth. Politicians wey get bitcoin e plenty for we country but dem dey hide. You want happened in the last election?
