Title: Have you ever been scammed ?
Post by: Becassine on July 14, 2023, 01:38:21 PM
Of course, there are many forms of scams, and scammed people have different profiles. At first I thought people who were scammed were too naive or too greedy, but in reality scams are diverse. Perhaps we could list the different forms of scam and, if need be, tell our own story to help others protect themselves. Don't forget to report scammers in the dedicated topic (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?board=83.0). Don't hesitate to tell me or correct me if I've made a mistake in my list.

1. There are the naive scammed, who haven't read enough about how to protect themselves and will simply give their private keys to a stranger who claims to help them.

2. There are the CEX scammed. MtGox, FTX etc ..., they can be beginners or experts.

3. Greedy scammed. Those who were promised crazy returns without doing anything. (Bitconnect for example or Madoff in TradFi))

4. Romantic scammed. A "nice" meeting on the Internet, some nice promises, and the romantic scammed are relieved of their funds.

5. The tired scammed, drunk, drugged or simply distracted by the kids doing bullshit next to him/her. A bit out of his depth, he won't realize that he's on a phising site for example.

6. The betrayed scammed. Whether a beginner or an expert, the betrayed scammed has trusted someone (friend, colleague, lover...) and lost his or her funds.

7. The shitcoin scammed. He/she bought lots of shitcoins on an obscure Pump and Dump group.

8. the sim-swap scammed (https://www.businessinsider.com/credit-card-phone-theft-sim-swap-identity-theft-investigation-2023-4?r=US&IR=T). Beginner or expert, the victim is deprived of all access from one minute to the next. The ease of the hack seems to depend on the country.

9. The  clipboard virus  (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=5410980.msg60809859#msg60809859) scammed. In that case LoyceV explained that (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=5190776.0) :

Quote
How it works
1. You select a Bitcoin address, and press CTRL-C.
2. The malware changes the address to an address owned by the hacker/scammer.
3. You press CTRL-V and lose any funds you send.
Even if you check part of the pasted Bitcoin address, chances are the first few characters are the same, and you still won't notice the address was changed.

10. The social media scammed. A friend has his twitter account hacked and asks all the victim's contacts for money. Or a VIP has his account hacked and promises a giveaway (it's like you send me an ETH and I'll send you 2 back, it sounds crazy but some people believe it).

11. The scam application scammed. (it's getting a little weird my inventions of words  ;D). Victims, attracted by the fear of having to pay a fine or attracted by a supposed gift, will scan a QR-code or click on a fraudulent link (classic phishing). Then, if the victim downloads a fraudulent application and validates the authorizations, then the scammer will take control of the smartphone and possession of the wallets and bank accounts. => https://upgradedtamilan.com/an-ordinary-cup-of-tea-cost-a-woman-from-singapore-1-5-million-rubles/

2, 3, 7 is what I've been through.

And I was also scammed by an impersonator of a relative, I remember when that person stole my friend's social media account and texted that he wanted to borrow USDT to pay fees, of course on a close level with me took absolutely no precautions and sent the money to the wallet address in the message, even though it was a long time ago but it helped me learn a big lesson not to be too quick to believe things on the internet, and now being exposed to certain terms like deepfake it makes me even more wary.

First, this topic is not best suited for Bitcoin discussion as it's not entirely related to Bitcoin. To me, it's either on beginners and helping them reach out to Newbies easily or on scam accusations, where everything relating to scams is being discussed.

I have only been a victim of what you called the "shitcoin scam." I have a lot of the rug-pulled tokens in both my BSC and ERC-20 wallets. Those were when I came in new to crypto, and I literally bought anything that was newly listed or recommended by anyone because I believed one of them was going to pump and I was going to cash out huge, but all were just mere imagination, which made me invest my funds wrongfully.

I believe one of the most common scams right now is romance. Where we have a lot of impersonators online pretending to be who they are not and going after their selected gender victims, convincing them into a romantic relationship, building trust with them I don't know how they do it, but it's common these days, and when they have convinced the person enough, that's when they will, in one way or another, start scamming the person out of their hard-earned money. This romantic scam also leads to some sort of investment scam. When you trust someone enough, they will use that trust to their advantage and introduce you to some sort of investment plan where, out of trust, you will have to hand your money over to them. The exploit will continue until the victim realizes themselves and separates themselves from the scammer.

Yes, I have been scammed once for $5,000. I was paying from my Ledger Hardware Wallet to Exchange for a quick P2P Withdraw and I realized I sent it to some address which has exactly same first 5 characters and last 5 characters similar to my Exchange Deposit Address. The attack which was done on me was Address Poisoning. I just copied the address from my Recent Transaction History on Ledger and sent $5k USDT. I still feel ashamed of that as I have kept myself safe from every other possible scam attack.

3. Greedy scammed. Those who were promised crazy returns without doing anything.
My neighbor is a retired civil servant, no longer young in age. There's a little story about both him and myself, where I might feel guilty about my presence in his life.

So, when the pandemic struck, my neighbor suddenly came to my house carrying a smartphone and showed me that he had bought some coins and stored them in a wallet on his phone. Being unfamiliar with the name of the coins he purchased, I tried to ask him. "Where did you buy those coins, uncle?" Then he replied, "There was a well-dressed person who offered me to buy these coins. He said that in 2 months, the price of these coins will skyrocket."

I was immediately taken aback and suspicious of the prevalent scam methods during that time. I delved deeper into these coins' details. And it turned out that my suspicion was correct, the coins purchased by my neighbor were from a scammer. The scammer was very clever, targeting elderly people. The scammer invited the victims to have a meal together first. In the midst of these dining activities, the scammer offered his fake coins to the victims.

One way or another we might have been scammed, while some have lost huge amount of money to scammer that affected their lives some have only lost pennies to scammers.

For me, I was scammed back then before I even dreamed of becoming a member of this forum from which I learned how to spot and prevent such stupid scams. I remember paying $2 - $3 back then to register for a site that pays out some of its users if they successfully refer others to the site but on the day of the withdrawal (the did set a particular day in which everyone will get paid, which was the first red flag of the site) after requesting for withdrawal and waiting for sometime without any response we contacted the admin and received an excuse from them claiming that the delay was due to the traffic and after a few hours the site went blank.

Mine falls under the ignorance on how to conduct proper research.

Scam can come in many forms by the scammers, but what i may not take as scam is when we from ourselves rent out our private informations to them for hack, if you're using a centralized exchange, you're not safe and are prone to two categories, the exchange itself may try to scam us or the exchange got hacked by external hackers, though I've never been a victim of either the hack or exchange scam before and don't think i will ever had such an experience of loosing my asset for some unserious gangs of hackers ready to steal away our fund.

I agree with the issue of scams on social media. It's unfortunate that scammers have come up with different ways to trick people and take their money. Just last week my friend's WhatsApp account got hacked, and the scammers used his account to ask all his friends for money. Some of them fell for it and it's sad to see how common these scams have become.

I think the largest targeted medium for scam is the social media, and a lot of other means including crypto scams.
We all need to be aware of these scams and be careful when using social media or engaging with unknown individuals, always  staying informed and cautious so we can protect ourselves and our loved ones from becoming victims of these schemes

The #3, in the form of a ponzi and pyramid scam.

Its existence has been there even before bitcoin has been made. When I was younger I was scammed by it once and I was naive not knowing that it's a typical scam.

This is like even your friends that have joined these ponzi's wouldn't care about you to be victimized by them just to get a commission and have their money back before the collapse.

So far I myself am still in a safe position and the assets that I have saved so far, because of this I tend not to research Altcoins or similar tokens too much for use in trading or investing, so far I often choose Altcoins that have developed good and safe.
Maybe one of our colleagues has experienced some of the above points, and in that case he didn't really think about the risk of loss, because his thinking when using some of what you mentioned like shitcoin and others was just to try and research.

I would say this type of scam mostly happens on the Facebook social media platform. Before many people use to have their contact numbers as their passwords and their accounts usually get hacked easily. The hacker will now read all your messages and detect those you might be close with or those that you have done business with one time or the other. Then he will start asking the person for loan stating some pressing things he is going through. This loan is this in form of crypto since you can’t dictate the owner of a crypto asset like you will do in bank transactions. You end up sending funds to him.

The easiest way to beat this type of scam is to through to communicate the account owner through another means, effectively through calls. This way you will hear directly from the person.

Very funny mate. You did justice to the topic. I have had such experience and I belong to number 7. Shitcoin rugpulled from a scam pump and dump group that suck mate. I got lots of scam shitcoin token stocked up in my wallet for years now during my early years as a newbie. Men I lost funds to those mess as I did not doy due diligence on the pump and dump shitcoin group. Although I learnt my lesson since then and never Will I make such mistake again.

I have never been scammed in most of the other way listed. Maybe the way I got scammed was through a shitcoin that promised to have higher gains. I held bags of the shitcoin and it just kept dumping and dumping until I just exited at one point  ;D

The other way I was scammed was speeding my time doing tasks for a project, and they just didn't pay. I value my time, once it's wasted, it's similar to losing money

2. There are the CEX scammed. MtGox, FTX etc ..., they can be beginners or experts.

6. The betrayed scammed. Whether a beginner or an expert, the betrayed scammed has trusted someone (friend, colleague, lover...) and lost his or her funds.
I believe these two are supposed to be in the same category of betrayed/betrayal scams because both of these scams occurred as a result of betrayal from someone you trusted, and the same is true of exchanges whom we trust and leave our coins with; thus, if they run with our money, they betrayed us, which can be exactly the same as the person you know and trust to betray you.

Yes, I was duped in a Telegram group by some people claiming to be from Binance Exchange. I wanted to buy USDT from them because it seemed easier because I didn't have to do KYC before buying USDT from them. There were so many screenshots of good testimonies and successful deals between the members of the group that they had, no idea they were all set up to swindle newbies. That is how I trusted them and paid the money to the escrow person in the group.

Since then, I've avoided Telegram since I no longer trust anyone on the network; moreover, I no longer trust anyone when it comes to cryptocurrency transactions.

I think we  clipboard virus  (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=5410980.msg60809859#msg60809859) should also be included as that's where I have been a prey to which made me created the thread above . This kind of scam is also worth adding to the list since it's not just done by users mistake but as a result of hackers manipulation using different means from pirated software's and O's which is the most common way and that of phishing link.

Experience this and totally sad that I lost a lot of money way back them from this before since 3)  I thought before that those ponzi platforms are genuine and they can give good profits in return but end up getting scam. 6) Got scam by I thought my friend and let me down just for his greed of money. 7) Experience a lot of this since frequently trading either old or new but the awful part is when ICO craze is so hype since been scam by some of it and never go back to invest on any new launch and now only grabbing some when they are officially landed on exchangers.

To answer your title, yes I have been scammed a lot.  I believe most of us here are victims of the shitcoin scam where a certain group offer crowdfunding and then right after the launch the project owner runs with the fund without even putting their cryptocurrency on exchanges.  I also experienced lots of rugpulls during the NFT craze and Pay to Earn trends.

While in real life events, I also encounter people who are agents of scam companies taking advantage of the naivety of people new to cryptocurrency by offering them promises that are too good to be true.  Many of my known friends fall to this kind of trick and never listened to me when I warned them about the possible scams of these kinds of schemes.

I don't think it's the same thing. In fact, almost from the very beginning of our apprenticeship, we learn the famous phrase: "not your keys, not your coins". So we know that if we leave our coins on a CEX, there's a risk. In addition, there's the experience of the past.

Being betrayed personally by someone you know is different: it's your trust that's shaken. You can't expect that. It's a disappointment that can be profound and go beyond the loss of funds. Not to mention that for CEXs, there's a tiny hope of recovering funds.

Bitcoin doubler scam, and that's where I fell in the beginning. I thought it's very easy to make a lot of bitcoin and I was so naive then. Without thinking, I deposited some bitcoin because someone recommended it to me.

But by now we all know that this is obviously scam. And so I'm not afraid to tell everyone was experience about it and try to spread the news that there's no such thing as easy bitcoin. It's hard to earn BTC by the way. It's better that we work our ass off and earn it rather than thinking of investing it into something like a doubler or whatever the scamming is calling it right now.

6. The betrayed scammed. Whether a beginner or an expert, the betrayed scammed has trusted someone (friend, colleague, lover...) and lost his or her funds.
There's this elderly guest in the place I used to work, he appears nice and we got along very well. One day he reached out to me for help for some money, and I didn't have the amount of money he was asking for which I told him. And he pleaded that I should help me with what I had and that he would source for money somewhere to add to it and solve the problem. I sent him the money, after 1 month when it was time to pay back, the man refused to pick my calls and whenever he picks it's just one stories or the other. After 6 months I gave up and I forfeited about the money, and it's been 2 years now and he has never called to apologize or return the money.

7. The shitcoin scammed. He/she bought lots of shitcoins on an obscure Pump and Dump group.
I've actually bought a couple of altcoins that ended up badly in the past but there's this one I bought last year which is my biggest lost so far. The project was hyped, there was a lot of publicity going on, I bought some token and it turned out the team are bunch of scammers with just empty promises. After launch, the chart took a deep dive as if it wanted to discover oil and I had to sell and cost my losses.

Oh definitely and it brings back memories!

Last 2017, the infamous "USI TECH" visited our country (Philippines) in order to host an event where we were able to meet and greet the developers. Since my friend who owned around ~120 BTCs at that time convinced me to try this investment scheme (ponzi), I was influenced by it given the young spirited teen I was (19 years old). At that time, I invested around $100 worth of BTCs which was definitely expensive given my current financial condition at that time.

During the first month, I saw my BTCs actually in increasing in value by purchasing these so-called "packages." But after the third (3rd) month (they promised that our BTCs would mature at the sixth (6th) month), the website crashed and everything was gone!

From here, I learned a valuable lesson to never trust any ponzi-schemes as there is truly no safe way for you to secure your funds.

Yes man, the thing here is that these scammers can not do with out our private keys, if every investors or every individual can keep their private and important things (keys) safe it will be more difficult for scammers to hoping to our system or savings.

Deceiving scams is also executed on many occasions especially targetted towards which is someone who will contact you on telegram, Facebook or in any other way and seek your help to withdraw their coins because they will claim that its stuck on the exchange or any platform and their country is not letting them to withdraw it and even they will show their profile and will give access to it but all of them were masked and it is under control of the one who is contacting you.

They will offer 50/50 to withdraw the amount so you will say okay and get the site credentials from the random person then you will try to withdraw but the support says you need to deposit $50 or $100 which is a red flag straight away but due to the amount, they can make most people will be deceived and fund the address provided in the screen, once you send it then there you are scammed!

I received such kind of offers lot of times and many were too so I think it can be added too in OP's list.

This days also has a plot of warnings and guidelines on how to fight scam that will make newbie safe if they will just follow unlike before when I started on crypto which there’s no much guideline on scam prevention since everyone is still exploring too on crypto.

I remember being a victim of ponzi and doubler before because the person that introduced me to Bitcoin doing it too to increase his holding. We consider it as gamble before but it turns out that it’s just a pure scam and waste of time and effort especially that our Bitcoin back then came from hard work in faucets and captcha service.

I could remember in 2017, Bitcoin doublee scam was one of the major type of scam that many of the Bitcoin investors fell on because it was a quick way for people to earn more Bitcoin from there portfolio of Bitcoin holdings. I have fell for this kind of scam before and many of my friends too and that made us to say no to cryptocurrency. Although I don't even know what was Bitcoin and how I can ew.rn from it.

They were the one that helped me to purchase Bitcoin since I was not even aware about all that it entails then. I thank God that now we have more ideas in cryptocurrency and we can proudly tell people to be more conscious about buy and trading Bitcoin with people they don't know especially when it is not escrowed. There are still new scam that investors are falling on especially for those newbies that areoney conscious and don't like asking questions.

You have mentioned the most common scams which are also happened a lot. There is another hack which is just started now or maybe I came to know about it not which is Backdoor in Windows. These windows are cracked versions that do not require us to pay money to buy their activation keys. Such windows would share your data with the scammer without your permission same goes for apk MOD apps that we use on our smartphones and Desktops.

There is another scam known as Wallet address Poisoning in which the initials and final words of your address are copied and the scammer uses them in his or her wallet address. He generated those addresses by using Vanity address generators which are also not easy to make.

Another scam is, cracked versions of Applications and software we download from third-party sources such as getintopc is a website that has caused one of my local community members to lose a lot of money because that app contained some loopholes or viruses who h provided unauthorized access to hackers.

Is it like the old spam e-mails when people said they had a blocked inheritance and had to pay the fees to unblock it? Because otherwise I don't really see what it's all about. Why anyone would pay $50 to unlock funds on a CEX just doesn't make sense (I guess I didn't quite understand the principle of this scam).

I once joined one group where they claim to give signal and unfortunately, I fell for it and was scammed.

I held bags of the shitcoin and it just kept dumping and dumping until I just exited at one point  ;D

Lol. This was my experience back then also. The shitcoins I gather hoping for pump is unaccountable to the extent I have to abandon the wallet/address so I can have peace of mind because sadly, I use to check on a daily basis before I eventually woke up to reality and realized I was scam. Some bad experience like such is actually an eye opener for a beginner and it taught me a lot that myself and anyone under my guide will not fall for again.

The other way I was scammed was speeding my time doing tasks for a project, and they just didn't pay. I value my time, once it's wasted, it's similar to losing money
This must be bounty I guess. Time is very precious, should be utilize well and dedicate to something worthy because once lost, it can never be regain again.

For sure most of us here that is already been in the cryptocurrency space for years probably already experience a lot of scams here or on different platforms. But throughout the years there, you're going to gain knowledge and know if something is fishy is going on. One of the mistakes that I did back in the day was investing in scam shitcoins, believing in something that is actually new to the space most of the time there was a huge hype on new things, when defi, ICO, and new tokens are being launched most of the time a lot of people hype this kind of investments. Luckily I only invest a few hundred dollars just to try a new coin investment this kind of scam is pretty common since developers could easily get out on the projects after they already get the money from ICOs, but sometimes it could sometimes payout a big amount of money.

Luckily I didn't really get scammed into something like with real people transactions since I always get careful every time I make a transaction if I think something is fishy going on and there are a lot of red flags on the transactions I already start to avoid the transactions since most of the time we all get greedy when they already start to talk about money or prices so if they bring that out easily that might be a red flag.

I don't think there's a way of dropping words of advise on how to prevent one from getting scammed, is really hard to even tell when you'd be scammed. They have so many strategies of getting one to fall for their lies. In my own case, I picture the whole story as fake before the scammer finishes preaching his story, at times I just say lemme try or test it if is really or not. And I always find myself falling for them knowing quite well that they are fake, giving scammers that benefit of doubt has made me lose so much. So to me I'd say is just to be careful when you sense any funny story that you're not sure of, you can ask questions about it before going for it.

Getting scammed is not the end of the world in my opinion, because anyone can get scammed even the smartest crypto-currency enthusiast can get scammed, but the problem is that when you get scammed you should always learn from your mistakes and work on it. Where is would have an issues is when someone who got scammed repeat the same mistakes again and get scammed as a result of it.

As newbies you should focus more on this topic scam because it's one big problem we have here in the crypto world and we need to also try to protect ourselves against it.

Yes, sometimes it is not just greed that results in scam victims. Although scammers really do still have these old ways of doing things, if you are really careful, you will likely not fall for them. Some people who are really not informed or enlightened about how things could be in the Blockchain industry can easily get scammed. For example, a user here talked about the clipboard virus, where you can mistakenly send an asset to an unknown address (it was my first time getting such information). In one case like that (although not crypto-related), the guy opened a site that was a copy of the original site, and he logged in with his details to that fake site. Immediately, all his funds were hijacked. He couldn't even explain what happened; it was only later that he realised what happened.
We just need to be extremely careful.

I'm not gonna say that's a scam anyways since I did willingly lend out some funds to someone as a kinda help/support... It was actually supposed to be paid back after two weeks buh the person really flaunted and all measures to get back the funds peacefully turned out to no avail... I just had to forget about it.
I haven't been a victim of a clear cyber scam or something like the ones you mentioned above... I try as much as possible to vert every information given to me about anything on the net. I can spot a scammy project from barely looking out the outlines..

Snip~

Is it like the old spam e-mails when people said they had a blocked inheritance and had to pay the fees to unblock it? Because otherwise I don't really see what it's all about. Why anyone would pay $50 to unlock funds on a CEX just doesn't make sense (I guess I didn't quite understand the principle of this scam).
Surprisingly lot of people fell for this scam in the past years but I am not hearing about this type in the recent days or atleast in the bitcointalk so people are more informative and start thinking about things instead of beleiving it completely.

There are many ways people usually get scammed by scammers, but seriously, you have outlined the most common ones used by scammers these days.

I was once a victim of a ponzi scheme, but this didn't come in a way that looked like a ponzi scheme, but still, I will call it a ponzi scheme because it comes in the form of investment and gets some return. It happens in this way that someone will be buying goods online and reselling them online under their site,so you will have to do some tasks on their site, like spinning, before you can get the opportunity to buy and resell goods in order for you to make your profits. In short, the method that someone will be getting 3% of the capital invested every day, with the idea of low commissions they promise to be given, compared to the other ponzi schemes, people easily believe in them and invest a lot, and some people were easily convinced because of their withdrawal process that was very fast at the beginning moment when they started, but surprisingly, one day we just wake up and see that the site is under maintenance, and from that day on, the site will never work again,so finally I was scam.but since that day, I have believed that scammers can come in any form to convince and scam people.

3. Greedy scammed. Those who were promised crazy returns without doing anything.

Not actually a crazy return but a moderate return. As a newbie I believed the system because I believed who introduced the system to me. He didn't advice me to invest with a small amount of money, because of the 10% referral he'll be getting from me, he allowed me invested all I have and the system crashed. An ugly memory.

7. The shitcoin scammed. He/she bought lots of shitcoins on an obscure Pump and Dump group.

Not actually a pump and dump group but when I go my money to invest in bitcoin. I think bitcoin was around $3k. This same guy advised me not to buy bitcoin that it was very expensive. He rather introduced 3 shitcoins to me and I dumped my money there and didn't recover any. It is a dark memory.

But I am glad where I am today both in finances and in understanding of cryptocurrency. What I cannot do is to deliberately deceive people to lose money because of my selfish financial gain.

Apart from cryptocurrency scam I believe some other people have been scammed also investing their money in Ponzi which they are rewarded with double of what they invested but later in the Scheme got crashed. This is one of the common scam many of us have experienced evern before we came into the   crypto world. I'm sure some people who are  not knowledgeable about this scam still fall for it thinking it is reliable and they can make money from it so quick.

People who don't have experience about scam and know nothing about other people scam experience are  likely to be scammed, I urge newbies to make research on things they know nothing about or experience to know how  real it is or not.

There's nothing bad in being a scam victim but making the same mistake again is what's bad.

That's probably really painful for you and also for all the people who have been scammed with shitcoins in the Pump and Dump group. Luckily I've never been interested in more shitcoins in the Pump and Dump group because those in the group are always making promotions for no apparent reason so I'm not that interested and have even quit such groups in the past. Now, let alone being tempted by shitcoin in the Pump and Dump group, I'm no longer interested in getting close to Shitcoin.

I have heard about the clipboard virus scam. I have read stories from real life victims of it and I freak out whenever I come across those stories. This is so because it reminds me of how close we get to losing our hard-earned coins through a moment of carelessness. And it pains me because we are living in a world where there are people working hard to scam others of their wealth gotten through their sweat.
Although I am taking the necessary security preventive measures, I also double and triple the first four figures as well as the last four figures of my wallet address whenever I want to send or receive crypto.

I can't say that I have been scammed because before the start trying to convince me just to get what they want I have already figure out what their plans are and it makes me to even act like I don't know whats happening and they (scammers) feel they're smart. I feel a little bit relaxed if they get what they want not because they tricked me but because I allowed it to happen, you can avoid being scammed only if you choose not to let those sweet words get into you.

That being said, that incident was a lesson that to this day still benefits me.

I would add the casino/gambling scammed, the impersonate scammed and the custodial wallet ones.
For the custodial wallet : you are using a service of custodial wallet and one day you realize that you can't withdraw your funds because they have been allegedly hacked, or the service is closing.
The gambling one is more common, you spend your money on a casino/sportsbook without any issue but the day when you make some winnings troubles come from nowhere for being paid or for withdrawing them. Something went wrong with your bet and he's cancelled, the casino accuses you to have breached its ToS, or ask for an unachievable KYC.
The impersonate : you think you are dealing with the legit customer support on Telegram, Twitter, Facebook, Slack, Discord, by email, ... but it's a fake account actually. Or the website you are using is a copy of the real one with a similar URL but not identical (website spoofing).

Oh yes, I didn't think about casinos. How does it work in practice? You play and you can't withdraw your winnings? Or do you play and lose all the time? I'd like to understand before adding it.

In the end, custodial wallets are just like CEX, aren't they? Are there any examples of such wallets where people haven't been able to withdraw their funds?

I have never been a victim of this kind of fraud but before investing, the sites should be analyzed well. This type of cryptocurrency-based fraud is very common and you should be aware of all the fraudulent tactics that scammers use to scam ambitious people. That's why I  check the sites properly. Scammers often create seemingly legitimate platforms that claim to offer high, often unrealistic, returns if you send value in cryptocurrency. In such cases, some precautions should be taken if the details are new, to thoroughly research the organization to verify whether they are correct.

I have never been scammed online because I am always careful or maybe I am just lucky. But I have been scammed offline. When I was running a business, one day I was very tired and didn't know when I lost concentration and some customers successfully scammed me for a huge amount. I had to trace them to their residence, but because. I had no CCTV in the office, there was no evidence to prove my accusation.

6. The betrayed scammed. Whether a beginner or an expert, the betrayed scammed has trusted someone (friend, colleague, lover...) and lost his or her funds.
I have been scammed by a very close neighbor. Then I was young and couldn't open a bank account, so I was giving him my income to save. Every day when I come back from my laborer job, I will give him my daily income. I wanted to use the savings to establish a business. One day he disappeared with my funds without notice. I trusted him so much that we had no agreement or proof that he was with my funds.

This is one of the most common type of scam in the cryptocurrency market and those who understand this will never fall for this kind of scam. Most time even those that had been in the market for so long can still far for this kind of scam. This is why we need to make sure that we do some good background check of the project we want to invest in become we decide to put our money in it.

Cryptocurrency is very vast and scammers now look for new methods to steal people's funds until they look for another better method to do this. There are other types of scam too but this one is still going on in the crypto market where scammers create a coin, market it and when they find out that people are investing in it, they take away the liquidity and everything will crash to zero making investors to lost there funds.

This is in the case of the investment scam pattern, where the scammer asks their victim to give them some money in order for them to multiply it with some kind of fake trading tools or some high APY, which is always the greedy ones and those who have little to No idea regarding Crypto currency who usually fall for their victim.

We just all have to be careful out there, for the scammers are always coming up with some kind of new trick to use in scamming people of their hard-earned money. The more we get wiser, the more they upgrade their own tools.

Since you have not been a victim of any of those scams, I will advise you to look out and be very careful when it comes to the kind of sites you visit with your device that are connected to your wallet. There are malicious and phishing links everywhere on the internet.

Being deceived by greed is possible for a trader - of course that is when they expect more profit when the potential price increase is not higher. But so far I'm grateful I haven't been scammed out of greed or something else like a scammer's attempts - but I always hope to avoid it as much as possible.

Just because I've never been scammed doesn't mean I won't be a target - but I really hope to never be. We can only minimize risk - but can never guarantee ourselves not to become victims. With all the faith and effort - I hope I can avoid that risk as much as I can.

Am I forgetting any?

I skimmed through user responses and didn't find yet another popular scam that is becoming popular these days. There was a story recently. A Singaporean woman, eager to get a free cup of tea, paid $20,000 for it. QR code scams are on the rise. The scammers posted a QR code promising, after scanning the code and filling out a questionnaire, a free cup of tea with milk. After the woman did everything that was suggested by filling out the questionnaire, she downloaded a third-party application, and the scammers got remote access to her smartphone. During the inactivity of the phone, when the hostess did not use it, the scammers took 20,000 dollars from the bank account.
She probably hated tea with milk after that.

Although this story is not related to Bitcoin, everyone should be careful when handling QR codes, as passing through them can lead to numerous phishing sites.

Very interesting, especially since I asked myself the question a few days ago. Finally, it is not the QR-code in question that is fraudulent, but the downloading of a fraudulent application, in the same way that a fraudulent link would be used. That said having $20,000 in his account, accessible on his phone is not very reasonable.

That is I in number 3, I was so happy to make money through their referral program . I was happy and I introduced many person to thesame referral program since it makes my balance to grow. When the day of withdrawal finally come, we where ask to pay some bitcoins to a particular address then we should message them for them to confirm it. That will serve as the gas fee. Boom I rushed to it, did the first one and  chatted them and they said the one I sent is too low to send the coin, so have to send again. I texted them, the kept mute, I complained in their telegram, I got banned. After some few days, the group was locked. I have learnt my lesson at the time I needed money most

Scam is eating deep into the internet and people fall victim including the elites. I have countless times been scammed by vendors who take funds but fail to remit what I paid for in bitcoin. This happen regularly on telegram. Happily for quite a long time I have never lost my bitcoin to such people again, although I still send money first, but good people exist who provide genuine services to buyers. The clipboard attack scam is one of the tricky scams on the internet, ever since I read and researched about it, I've never sent money without cross checking the address. And it also thought me not to download untrusted apps into devices where I transfer btc.

I did not experienced getting scammed but I did get fooled since I ended up giving him some of the money I got for free. It was on 2019 and I did not worry about it since the money I got is free from an exchange platform from using their service and the guy also lent me his crypto to pay the fees and was able to sell it as I don't have money at all and I am not in crypto for years but now, I learned from that mistake. That's why it is important to know the signs if it is a scam or not.

Trying to avoid greed is certainly a good thing. Greed is owned by everyone and it can happen anytime when you don't have full control over yourself. I have several times experienced my inability to control myself to greed because of the panic that arises. It made all my trading plans fall apart and I ended up losing money. The importance of managing emotions so that they are stable will affect everything.
But for scams I am more vigilant and have never fallen into a scammer's trap.

Of course, there are many forms of scams, and scammed people have different profiles. At first I thought people who were scammed were too naive or too greedy, but in reality scams are diverse. Perhaps we could list the different forms of scam and, if need be, tell our own story to help others protect themselves.
I got scammed in 2018 due to my ignorance. At that moment i try to buy some stable coins using my social media account. I collect his account number and send the required money. The scammer first told me very well about his business and screamed that he would pay me after sending the money but later after receiving the money he blocked me from social media. I didn't lose much money but at that time i got lesson for my ignorance and have never made a purchase through social media account.

Out of all the ones you shared, this is the only one that I've experienced in my 5 years that being involved with crypto.

TBH, I consider myself lucky that I didn't fall into too much scam by these scammers because before I invested my money, I learned to identify which are scams, and which are not by watching many videos online, but mostly on Youtube. There are some videos out there that are giving tips, and signs that it's a scam. Of course I also some of the projects here that has been launched, and turned out to be a scam. Most of them happened in 2017 during the ICO hype where many projects are popping out of nowhere, and there is this one particular project back in 2017 where they put Roger Ver as one of the developers. Of course the token sale turned out to be a success, and has been listed on an not-so popular exchange, and after few months since it has been listed, the project just vanished including the money of the investors.

Am I forgetting any?

Has this happened to you or someone you know ?
Rug pulls. I think you missed it.

There are many projects back in the past where they ended up as a rug pull. I still remember that time back in 2017 as well where I risked some of my money, invested into a project that is on it's token sale, and I did spent hours researching regarding this project. To cut the story short, it ended up as a scam project, and I lost my money.

I wouldnt do that if I didnt profits on some shitcoin too.

My friend had experienced a malware attack that changed his bitcoin wallet address to someone else's bitcoin address that a hacker had implanted.
At first, he didn't notice until he transacted and saw that his bitcoin wallet address was different from the one he copied and pasted and then reinstalled the system into a new one.
Scams from HYIP programs always target new people who don't have enough knowledge. I experienced it several years ago when I was new to the world of the internet and crypto.
But my friends also managed to get big returns from HYIP sites because the owner wrote the wrong reward that my friend should get and made my friend immediately withdraw all his balance.

6. The betrayed scammed. Whether a beginner or an expert, the betrayed scammed has trusted someone (friend, colleague, lover...) and lost his or her funds.

Yes I have been scammed by such a person. It was about an account that I agreed buy. He seem like such a nice person. You can't even tell apart if he is a scammer. So like out agreement I send him the fund. Then he said some work had to be done. So I needed to wait. I though it was okey because it was late at night. The next day I texted him he said he was several ill. Then I finally understood I was scammed. I tried calling him many time he didn't received. In the end he blocked me from both social accounts and my number.

9. The  clipboard virus  (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=5410980.msg60809859#msg60809859) scammed. In that case LoyceV explained that (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=5190776.0) :

The clipboard virus happened to me recently. Someone I didn't know texted me in telegram and gave a file. I thought it was a normal file. I wasn't that caution that time so I opened it and everything was fine.

Later when I was trying to make a trasanction every time I put my send address a phishing address 0x******  gets paste in it's place. Other copy paste functions were okey. But whenever it was a crypto related address, that specific phishing address will get paste in the box. So I tried everything to fix it. Fixed registry, restarted clipboard, system restore but nothing fixed the problem. Later I had to completely setup windows again.

I think you missed Ransomeware virus scam. I was a victim of it. All of my data got encrypted due to this malware and I couldn't decrypt my data due to it was a new kind of malware. Luckily all of my data, wallets, key, passphrase were stored in the cloud. So I got saved a big time that time.

So as a victim my advice would be never install anything if it isn't from a trusted source.

Luckily I haven't got scammed so far in my life, related or not related to crypto, but most of the scam attempt I received outside of crypto is the last type, number 11. The latest evolution of this type of scam is they pretend to be from a shipping company and said that I have a package that need to be claimed and I need to check the receipt number in the pdf document they sent. But not a surprise that it's not really a .pdf its an malware app that allow the scammer control the phone, I didn't get scammed of course. I read the article about that scam before hand.

Now, one thing that OP hasn't mentioned and I think doesn't include in any of those list above. A scammer once try to scam me by ordering my service. They said that they are part of an exchange and my payment will be send to the address on those exchange, they ask me to create an account. Long story short I created the account, and the payment in form of Bitcoin on the exchange is actually show up, but when I can't withdraw it, and asking for verification which I should send some bitcoin first to those address. I didn't send anything of course, and probably the amount of bitcoin in the exchange dasboard is fake.

Good experience from the incident of your friend. I think, This is the need to be vigilant and not carelessly connect our wallet to a scam swap project, because there is a high potential for danger lurking. can be rugpull or when your wallet is connected, the contents of the wallet can be drained. Create a new wallet and don't have any special assets for that.

One of the human traits that is easily deceived is that you want big results from the lure of being able to get rich in a short time. Logic and common sense lose because of it. I am grateful that until now I have never been deceived. However, in my country, in the past two years, many have been deceived, including my friend, for playing Binomo and trading robots with the hope of getting rich quickly in the end, all of their funds run out. I was already tempted by them, but thankfully at that time, I happened to have no money to join them. Maybe this is the lesson for me to avoid fraud.

From that incident, I learned a lot from the victims of the scam. In this modern era, we must improve our abilities, improve our reading literacy, and understand the investment risks we will choose. don't let something like this happen again. In my opinion, the understanding of literacy in many countries is very minimal, especially for those who live in villages, that's why many people are deceived in various ways related to crypto.

We should understand that the purpose of investing is not to make someone rich quickly. Because investing must be accompanied by patience and strong commitment and remain calm when the market fluctuates and is ready to take risks. Therefore, every country needs to make an understanding to the public about investment so as not to increase the number of victims of fraud under the guise of investment. Provide understanding to the public about what investment is, what are the objectives of the investment, how about the benefits of the investment.

I have never be scammed and I'm not proud of it, because I know very well that why some people get scammed is because of what they are interested to get with the easiest format, but I'm not seeing that we should not invest in something else but let us not to be much interesting for what we want, nobody that is being scammed 1$ or more than one dollar that is not interested to get the thing is looking for because the thing is looking for is cheap. One of the things that develops the interest of people to be lured into scam is because they want to get things at cheaper particles.

Agree, avoiding greed is the most important thing to avoid being deceived. What we have to understand first is that in every field there is of course knowledge, learn the knowledge as deeply as possible, because nothing can be achieved instantly, nor can you become rich. Even in real business it can (very likely even) make people bankrupt, it all depends on the process. every process there must be a risk.

In my opinion, trading is not something that can be done without knowledge, just like business. And even in business, if what you are chasing is only money, you are greedy without focusing on the process, you could get hurt. that's how.
In the end, everything depends on our mindset and perspective. So be wise in any case when making a decision.

Quote
But for scams I am more vigilant and have never fallen into a scammer's trap.
The characteristics of fraud are generally the same and I also almost experienced fraud. Invite acquaintances and he claims to be a successful person because Cypto ends up offering crypto. In essence, we have to seek a lot of information and diligent reading. Do not be easily lured by the lure of wealth.

That's probably really painful for you and also for all the people who have been scammed with shitcoins in the Pump and Dump group. Shitcoin can be sometime helpful. Just that it can make you become rich in a tinkle of an eye and can also make one become poor in seconds. I think one can still invest in it with care and with a little amount one can avoid to lose.

Has this happened to you or someone you know ?

We know that most scams happen in the online world than in the real world. So we need the utmost knowledge to avoid them from targeting us so that we don't lose our money by falling prey to those scams. There are many scams that promise good things and then walk away with money in various tricks. Scams are really clever since I have experienced a lot of losses as a Bitcoin scam. I bought a coin according to a scam person in a telegram group and he said it will pump a lot. But I didn't know that coin can't be sold but later I didn't hear any more about the scam person he left me with loss. We've seen many more sheetcoins that got pumped up too much and then went down completely and never got monetized, rather the projects went scam. We have seen FTX and Luna as the most scams of people's money from which many people suffered losses and lost thousands of money. So we should acquire knowledge on our own without gaining experience in this online world and not accepting promises from various strangers. Otherwise, it may be better for us to stay away from those who half-heartedly fool us in various ways with the intention of scamming us.

Since I have never been scammed and have never wanted to be, I must admit that when I see the 1, 2, and 3 being mentioned, I'm extremely afraid of it. This is because the best thing that can cause someone to be scammed is greed; if you are not content with what you have, no matter how, you will undoubtedly become a victim of fraud. As an investor, you must be content with what you have in order to avoid participating in any action that will put you in the hands of fraudsters. Additionally, you must exercise caution in all of your online dealings because anyone can message you to ask for your private key or to expose you to something that will cause you to do so. If you are really smart, though, you won't fall victim to scams.

Smartness is, in my opinion, the most crucial quality to acquire since, if you possess it and are exposed to something about which you are unaware, you will be forced to consult others or visit a discussion forum to learn more. I believe that some of the victims of scams are to blame because the majority of them look for places where they can receive free airdrops. This is because a friend of mine who always loved everything about airdrops ended up having his wallet hacked during the airdrop process, wiping out all of his savings.

To get it, you have to connect your wallet, for example using our metamasks to the website, they direct you to submit a claim with the potential for high risk because we don't know whether the website that is directed to the real website or fake website / scam. Overall I think I have lost approximately almost $40k in scams, rug pulls and hacks combined ever since I have started my crypto journey.

Even though that crypto is still a long way in terms of cybersecurity level, but I always believe in it and I am here to stay. Crypto saved me from financial disaster.

Lost approximately almost $40k in total doesn’t stop me from fulfilling my dreams and keep going. The opportunities are endless here in the crypto space and I ain’t going anywhere.

After I read the first point to the end, there is nothing I can tell here about the fraud that happened to me. Maybe all this time I've always been careful and implemented a comfortable living scheme regardless of an offer that is profitable but doesn't have to work. I am also the type of person who is quickly satisfied, meaning what I get is my fortune. Often times I ignore profitable offers with small capital that can get big rewards. I always avoid this type of fraud because I have learned a lot from events that have happened to people around me.

Many different stories have been experienced by victims of fraud and until now different types of fraud continue to claim victims. You need to be careful in digesting something that is easily profitable but doesn't need to spend capital or doesn't need to work. In order to get free Bitcoins on forums we have to write some posts which managers ask as a condition to get paid. For me, nothing is free without having to work, except getting an inheritance from my parents.

Since my interest in crypto increased in 2017 and started spending many hours of my time working for several campaigns of ICOs and other services, mainly as a translator, I have been "scammed", if you call it with that name, by devs who never paid or flew with the money and abandoned the project short after beginning the roadmap.

I have to say, though, that the works who paid compensated all the time lost in the others, and that as I invested my time, I can't say that I have lost money (but time is more valuable than money).

I think that this is the way most of us learnt crypto: the hard way.

There was a period in my life that i was so enthusiastic about Forex trading, so there was this FX trading group I saw on Facebook, a lot of experts where always dropping analysis of trading signals.
So one particular guy caught my attention, so I gave him a private message, asking him few questions about trading and how I could improve on my trading abilities.
He replied me and started to have a discussion with me, telling me there are some robots that he uses, that helps him to analyse the market and make favourable trades, he said that for me to use it, I will be paying him $100 every two weeks, so I could also enjoy what's he is enjoying with signals he gets.
Sincerely speaking, I saw this as an opportunity for me to really improve my trading skills, but unfortunately I wasn't having the money as at then, I wasn't really happy with myself for not having that money.
So I planned on making saving to give him the first $100, at least to give it a trial. So I asked the guy to give me sometime, that I will get back to him.
So after about two weeks, I had to come on that same group again, I saw a post tagging that guy, saying nobody should have any form of transaction with him, that his is fraudster, that he has scammed a lot of innocent persons on the group. I started seeing comments of people affirming post, saying yes I was scammed by this Same guy of so and so amount.
I was so amazed, as to how I would have fallen a victim, the only thing that held me, was the fact that I wasn't having the money as at then.

Man, that's really rough ain't it. I heard some people back in the NFT days that they played so much that they almost risked their mental health over nothing and it all turned out just to be a rug pull from the devs. I love video games, but damn that might be so exhausting that I might not even consider grinding even non-NFT games as well.

When I hear of rug pull, I know we're talking about NFTs. Damn. Good times, bad times.

It will be very difficult to find anyone who got into cryptos between the year 2010 up till 2020 who would say they haven't been scammed one way or the other. I've had my fair share of it, from doubling sites to rugpulled ICOs to unpaid bounties here to lending coin days. Anyway, the good thing is that were still here today despite all that challenges. My early crypto days yea, aped a lot of low mcap rugpull projects in dextools. Overtime I've learnt the hard way, I now do in-depth research before any investment, using credible CEXs like bitget has also helped me since such CEXs filter projects before listing them.

Offcourse, started doing it with bigger amounts (especially trying to double my amount of DOGE) and lost a bunch of them. Also participated in numerous bounties/airdrops that turned out scam but it is almost unavoidable.

Personally, my journey to cryptocurrency was never without hard lessons. First, it was the difficulty in accessing FX to pay for services overseas that  raised my curiosity for asking questions about alternative as a lot of things depended on me sending payments across borders. This was how Bitcoin was suggested and I began learning and using it. Then we were buying from third parties because of the Fx restrictions... and this exposed me to a lot of scam attempts. I fell for some and paid dearly but I never gave up because I had already seen the opportunity and beauty of Bitcoin. With time I was able to get some reliable merchant and that was when the journey became more interesting.

Good enough this technology have evolved and awareness have also increased leading to reduced scams but one still need to be smart and guide against greed. "If it seems too good to be true, it probably isn't "

One of the scams known is Reverse engineering which takes a talk with the hacker and the victim. After those conversations, the victim provides the details and the hacker now have the full access to them. Next is phishing which is a website that pretends to be the legitimate one the hacker now accesses your account or device without knowing of the victim and stole all of the funds.
This is the reason why having an anti-virus is a must to make sure your device is safe from those attacks.

The real name for that practice is Social engineering actually. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Social_engineering_(security)
It allows hackers to go beyond technical limits, so it can be a powerful way of hacking, I think we can categorize it as a kind of scam, but it's not a pure scam since the goal of social engineering is not to directly steal funds of one victim but to get informations or an access to a system.
Reverse engineering or backwards engineering, is something else, it has nothing to do with hacking and scamming "process or method through which one attempts to understand through deductive reasoning how a previously made device, process, system, or piece of software accomplishes a task with very little (if any) insight into exactly how it does so."

One time, I got scammed by someone when I was doing an OTC trade, exchanging a few fiat money for 13 USDT. I'm going to name him as "Miskrib". Anyway I don't do deals with unknown people, but this guy is an admin from a group and is a really legit guy. However, I didn't really DM him before, so he approached me. And of course, I was idiotic enough not to check his profile, which had an username as "Miskrlb". So, what's the difference here in usernames? All he had to do was just change one letter to an L in lowercase to make it seem legit profile.

An i and l is very easy to distinguish due to the dot part unless you are in rush or really trust the user he is impersonating just like what happened to you. What platform you are using and do you post a selling topic? Because receiving a PM from someone that you didn’t ask for is major red flag when dealing P2P.

13USDT is still a significant amount on a 3rd world country. I’m just confused on how you get scammed by a man impersonating an admin while his profile description is different. Is this happened on telegram?

Yes, that actually happened on Telegram. I trusted the guy since I had really good conversations with him in the group chat. But, also I was in a rush to pay the WiFi bill, or else they would cut it off ( had a call from ISP on that day and I had no money in my mobile banking account ). And I also know 13$ is a lot in here, cuz it's almost that kind of money that you could buy a nokia button phone. But well I had to learn my lesson. sometimes you gotta take hit in life so you can be really careful about it. Anyways I'm just letting everyone here, so hopefully nobody falls for this scam.

Generally in life, you hardly can do without being scammed unless you live in a less corrupt country not to talk of being scammed in crypto. You hardly can see someone that has being in crypto for long that has not been scammed either directly or indirectly.

3. Greedy scammed. Those who were promised crazy returns without doing anything. (Bitconnect for example or Madoff in TradFi))

In anything in life, greediness kills. And this is majorly what scammers used in attracting there clients by making the project too real with fake promises.

7. The shitcoin scammed. He/she bought lots of shitcoins on an obscure Pump and Dump group.

This is highly common in crypto. I myself have fallen into this scam several times. Being greedy plays a key role here. When a token is pumped and one till keep waiting for more pump untill it dump .

Telegram is these days full of such scammers and they are very clever and good at what they do. They will create an exact same username with just a minor difference that can't be identified for the first time when you check the username and they will have the exact same profile image and bio. A lot of such scammers attempted their tricks at me but they could never succeed but I know this because I have seen it happening quite a lot, one time a scammer got very close.

I was working with a project and we had a community in Telegram, we were a team, so the scammer DMed me impersonating my manager and asking to borrow some money from me because he can't access his wallet. I told him that I have some and I agreed to send them, and then when I checked after getting out of the conversation, I saw my previous DM with the manager and that is when I realized it is someone else messaging me.

I used it a bit some time ago but almost got scammed ( for a low amount but still) after which I called it a day. A lot of bounties still require that you sign up for their telegram group so I keep it around in case I ever want to do a bounty again, but other than that I would never use it.

I've been through 3 and 7. Before I engage myself in crypto, I often look for opportunity online as my side hustle because at that time, i'm a minimum wage earner and it's not sufficient for my family's needs. I started joining in FB investment (i'm quite naive and just going with the flow since the promised earnings are quite attractive). All is well at first, but after a series of payouts, the people behind this scheme deactivated their accounts and runaway with our money. Then I became aware of crypto (particularly Bitcoin), once again I tried my luck investing in shitcoins due to possible profits that are not guaranteed. Again, because of greed I lost my money and it's really unfortunate that I opted to invest in shitcoins rather than taking time to fill my mind with knowledge.

It's all in past now and I think once in our lives we had this experience that can give us a great lesson. Thus, my advice to beginners, don't wait until you made a mistake before you'll learn a lesson. Because you can avoid having these mistakes if you're careful on everything you do. Scammers are everywhere so we have to outsmart them.

#3 is perhaps the most common and something I have experienced myself. Many years ago I invested in several high yield investment programs and they always exit scammed. A few times I was lucky to have made a profit before they went bust. There was some cloud mining programs I invested in which seemed too good to be true but I got caught in the hype after seeing a few investors getting massive returns.

3 and 7 for me
Platforms like racksterli , swiftfundz, seplat and so many actually and it's to me greed because I'd have just used my money for something reasonable because it's hard earn but I was really blind to these.
Then for 6 yes so many shitcoins feginu , rabbit inu all the inu you can think of I've wanted to make it big through them but the opposite was what I got...

I think you forgot to add Religion scam. Pay all your salary and earnings for one stuff all the other and buy this and that for more money to come in and nothing happens. That is a scam. Where your life isn't checked you just want to get heaven's blessings by bypassing or through socalled alms giving. Oh many many . It's funny though

Scammer are just too much on telegram just as you have said. But I don't think one can fully do without it in the crypto space as it is being required during some bounties and in running some airdrops. I believe one can still use it with caution and care without being scammed.

Has this happened to you or someone you know ?

Romantic scam my friend, encounter this where the scammer is sweet, showing money, and portfolio, he also send small amount of money to lure my friend even  creating an account saying to put amount of money, he scan scam like 700 usd, already told him its too good to be true , also ask me to put money, because its profitable, but from the start I told him its a scam he never listen, too bad he had to learn it the hard way, instead of listening to me, I have save lots of his friends, because they are ready to pour large amount because of the profit, luckily she got busted because of lots of questioning and disappear with the money.

If you had ever tasted scam before you will know what it means and how to make your crypto assets have a guaranteed security measures, most of the scam related cases are associated to how we also contributed to them happening, if we don't give way for most of the scam related cases, we cannot be scammed without inviting them in the first place, we have to know how we can maintain a perfect security measures over our crypto assets.

That was a clever hoodwink. I had to zoom in before I saw it was an L in lowercase in there. The way I overcome something like this is by saving the contact in my own way, usually admins and escrows. I know they're the ones who are often the target of cloning/impersonation. So, once I'm in such a group I save the contact of anyone I would do business with and how I want them to appear. That way, I fear nothing once it comes from that user. With that you can easily spot an imposter and report or expose them to warn others.

If you had been scam once I think that's not enough case for you to learn many things about what other things need to avoid since you need to experience or learn from other experience so that you can learn more about how to safekeep your money away from scams. Good thing we have great places like this forum where we can learn a lot of things or get new refreshers since it help us get updated on new methods use by scammers.

So you mean that a person needs to get scammed multiple times in order to understand that they shouldn't trust anyone over the internet no matter what they say or what they want to offer them? I don't think that a person needs to become a victim of more than one scam scandal in order to understand that they always need to be vigilant when they are using the internet and have money on them because scammers are always looking for prey to hunt.

One might not learn all the ways scammers scam people everywhere on the internet if they get scammed once, but once you face that situation, you will at least be more cautious and will obviously lose trust in any strange people or websites that you encounter anywhere on the internet.

I am not much of an investor, so I was never got scammed by investing in a scam project. But in the past, I was scammed numerous times by projects that ran bounties. I would say the majority projects I participated were scam (for me, a project that raised a lot and still failed to achieve milestones is a scam for me). I was scammed for time.

Not sure if you're still talking about crypto, most of them back in the days especially in 2017 when ICOs were kinda hot topic. I can still remember 3 months of wasted time just to end up in a shitcoin that you couldn't even pay your electric bills in the first month with it. They're more like a side gig than a "real job".

Even though you didn't pay anything, they still got the benefit of exposure.

Scammers would still improvise. I can recall scambaiters like Kitboga and Jim Browning commentating that there are just plenty of crypto scams out there other than that usual refund scam.

This is opposite of my story because I avoided bounties and even common airdrop I do not collect, I had the mindset of investment and it was there that I got scammed majorly. I am yet to see anyone who hasn't been scammed in this cryptocurrency industry from their newbie days. The market is full of scam and I do not blame newbies who fall for them. But I only blame them when the scam is so lame and they fall for it.

It's okay to feel ashamed for encountering such a costly mistake at the brief period it happened, but you don't have to beat yourself up about it for long and being ashamed till now. Every human is prone to mistake and we have at different times in life made our different mistakes of different degrees but we just don't have to live with it.  So mate let the shame go away mistake is part of life and no one is above it, we can only try not to repeat it and am sure you're doing that.

.

I have had a direct experience with number  3 but as for number 6 it was a friend that fell for that in his early stage in cryptocurrency.

I got involved with some virtual mining stuff like that, where i had to pay money to purchase a crypto mining machine in the platform which will be mining coins for me every day and eligible to withdraw the coins to my wallet at each end of the month. It was a funny experience actually as I had to always checking the platform first thing eaxh morning I wake up to see how my investment was going. Long story short, I woke up one morning after two weeks of investing into it only to get a massage that the site is doing an upgrade and we should wait for update very soon, for over more than 3 years now am still waiting for the damn update about the site upgrade. Lol.
That was how I lost my money to that virtual mining scam.

As for the number 6, it happened to a friend who trusted another friend of his to buy him bitcoin into his wallet, just for his friend to
buy below the amount he gave him money for and sent to his wallet, at that time this my very friend don't know how to calculate bitcoin or convert it to usdt because he was just trying to learn about crypto from the very person that was scamming him. It was after some months he got to know he was shortchanged in the amount of bitcoin his so-called friend sent to his wallet.
 How awful.

Ever since I read that LoyceV thread, I've been very careful about the address when sending BTC. To be honest I didn't care about that before because I didn't know a scam like that existed. I just copy and paste and send the Bitcoin to the wallet, but now I take my time to check through the address if it's the same.

Recently I wanted to send BTC to a friend. We've already discussed previously and he said he was going to need some Bitcoin from me that he'll pay back later. I agreed and asked him to let me know when he needed it.
So this week I received a WhatsApp message from him. The message was his Bitcoin address, with a second message "Let me know when you've sent it". Since we've already discussed it I wanted to transfer the coin immediately but I stopped and decided to call him and confirm. I may be chatting with someone else, maybe someone who stole his phone or whatever. So I called him and asked if I should send it and confirmed that it was him before I sent it.

I know it doesn't mean much but the single fact that I now take my security very seriously since joining this forum is a big WIN.

Just like they said knowledge is very important, is very bad venturing into something one knows nothing about, I was scam through telegram signal group, I was added by someone I don't no, and that group I saw many testimonies of people that profited from the signal group, so I was very thrilled to join them, so they brought a signal for us to buy a certain coin and I did, so I watched the trade moving times four of my capital I was very happy so when I tried selling the coin it refuses to sell, I tried every all to no avail so that was how I lost my money.

I was also scammed in this manner, the same in telegram too I so signal and also people giving testimony about their profit. I was shocked the moment I discovered that I was scam, before I got involved completely I was doubting that how is it's possible for someone to get quick money but since is the money I decided to ignore my doubting and focus on it. After this one I was also scam again this particularly involved arbitrage which I know people make money through it, then I got involved too, they said I should send my lite coin which if it get there is will multiple by two which I did and it multiple, then I wanted to send the money out to my exchange and it refused to go, that was how I loss my fund.

Has this happened to you or someone you know ?

The main problems I've gotten in the crypto space have been interacting with exchangers. You never know for sure how a swap will end up, whether it was successful or was a one-way coin shipment. Another unpleasant moment for me was also interactions with smart contracts, which could take extra coins from my wallet, in the form of hidden fees, or empty my wallet after the next approve.
