Title: Suggestions for a Wallet with Timer?
Post by: tetaeridanus on September 17, 2023, 02:01:13 PM
Hello BitcoinTalk,

Since today I have been using hot wallets and cold wallets both. My problem is I don't know if there is a wallet where I can send coins but cannot withdraw for a set of time during panic times. For example I send BTC or ERC-20 Tokens which I want to hold but don't want to touch( unable to touch) for 4 years. I know not your keys not your crypto but is there a service doing this, I'm not talking about putting to staking on a cex or dex.

Thanks in advance!

Tetaeridanus.

I don't know if there's one in existence but why would do that? Just leave it there and manually don't touch it for the set period of time and you're still free to touch any time you may want to.

This isn't really a good idea but that's the least way of doing it through staking it but if that's not the one that you're looking for.

Just leave it as is and get back on it after several years.

I don't encounter such feature on non-custodial wallet but you can achieve by locking it through the use of smart contracts which require coding knowledge to achieve.

The most convenient solution for your problem is to stake your tokens on a trusted DeFi that has a timelock feature. It's equivalent to a timelock since they are using smart contract to hold and lock your funds.

Coinb.in (http://coinb.in/) support this kind of time lock features. TryNinja explained it in details how you can use this features. How do timelocked transactions work? (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=2415595.msg24712087#msg24712087)

You can check this thread from LoyceV where he explained how you can do that. Using Locktime for inheritance planning, backups or gifts (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=5180850.msg52332345#msg52332345)

There's this:
In order to make coins that are unspendable until after a certain time or block height, you will need to create an address that uses OP_CHECKLOCKTIMEVERIFY. Only coins sent to such an address are guaranteed to be only spendable after a certain time.

Be careful though: there was recently a topic from someone who added an additional zero to the target block number, and accidentally locked his Bitcoins for 125 years (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=5455368.msg62365824#msg62365824). My advice: learn not to panic :) And keep your funds offline, make them labour intensive to access. Bury them deep, if you need to sweat for 2 days to get to them, you'll have 2 days to think about what you're about to do. Just make sure you know what you're doing before doing anything.

Thank you for all your replies, I wish I could merit them :) ,

I will use my coding knowledge for maybe writing a smart contract for ERC-20s however a small mistake would be costly like 125 years as you said.

The best way is to make it hard to reach, the reason I asked this is I don't wanna panic sell during dips.

With respect,

Tetaeridanus

Atomic multi Bitcoin & altcoin 1000+ wallet have staking feature - https://atomicwallet.io/ (https://atomicwallet.io/). This wallet have more than 5 millions users and also swap function. Fees are only blockchain, but swap is 0.5%+.
Please look in this Atomic wallet thread too: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=5454994.0

You can use existing cold wallets and store them in a secure location; I really don't understand why you need the non-transacting feature for such a long period of time? And I'm not aware of any wallets like that

Keep in mind that this also means you can't "opportunity sell" during pumps.

You can use a watch only wallet, so you can't move your coins except you import your seed phrase.

If you're too panic, I think investment isn't for you because there's no investment without any risk. Learn to cool down yourself, after all if you invest in Bitcoin, you have nothing to worry.

Please look in this Atomic wallet thread too: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=5454994.0
You linked the thread where it suggest people to not use Atomic wallet lol.

OP want to avoid accessing their fund, I think in-case @OP do these and see the price it has a little bit pump. There has some chance he access it and sell it because he cannot handle the gain %.

You always see, people sell to early due of these. IMO @OP want to avoid these for the next rally bitcoin, people in the top already correct to advice @OP for using (Locktime). Some of hardware wallet also provided these example from Trezor: https://trezor.io/learn/a/locktime-in-trezor-suite

Yes sir this is what I was talking about, some of the answers really helped but I can't manage to write a new smart contract to set a timer, this can be my option, does it need advanced coding language to use(trezor)?

Keep coin without staking it, but have in mind of holding for next 2years before touching it is a good ideas and have good chance to sell, if the coin increase before expectation period. In other words holding coin in the wallet is a place to be a savers side avoid stories. And finally, is good to stake coin that generate profits on APY and the assets value increase after a long run holding.
