Title: [Auction] Casascius Coin, 0.5 BTC Silver, 2013
Post by: jon_flop_boat on September 20, 2023, 01:08:31 AM
Just like it says on the tin: half a bitcoin, silver, 2013.

I'll be up front with you: I don't know anything about bitcoin or, specifically, this coin.  I got the coin from a crypto enthusiast, but I never got into crypto myself.
I know it's worth half a bitcoin at a floor, and an auction seems like the best way to find the ceiling. 😎

Is it series 2 or series 3?  I don't know.  You'd think this would be easy to find out; it's not.  The pictures are not helpful, and the wiki doesn't list the differences comprehensively.
Chain of custody?  Couldn't tell you.  It is currently mine and that's ~as far back as I can trace custody (gonna leave the previous owner out of this).
Grade?  Uuuhhhhh look at it.  As far as I know, it's never -- not one single time -- been in a protective case, and I can tell you for a fact that it's been touched by ungloved human hands.  I am touching it while I write this post.

If you've got fun facts about Bitcoin, this Casascius dude, or collectors' coins, I'm all ears. 🦻

Here's pictures: https://imgur.com/a/fkJSMZL
If you want more pictures of the coin for reasons that are unfathomable to me, I can take more, as long as they're not under the seal.

Here's "verification" that it's still loaded (I don't know how reliable this site, maybe you do): https://casascius.uberbills.com/?address=1Agj3S8Rr2QFW4m2mLFiR6JHG2zrbaUDj6

Starting bid is 0.6 BTC, 0.1 0.01 BTC increments.

I'll shut bidding down at 11:59PM PST on 26 September 2023.
Buyer pays escrow fees. 💸

Cool coin, even though ofc in slightly sad condition.
Still an amazing piece of Bitcoin history.

You can set-up your auction however you like, but just saying bid increments of 0.1 are pretty rough. 0.01 to 0.02 would probably generate more action and it's still junky.

I bet it would pretty up if I tried at all; but I didn't want to risk damaging the information with something like a solvent or ultrasonic cleaner: I'll leave that risk to the buyer.

Sounds good, done. 🥂

A very rare and valuable Cas. PLEASE DO NOT CLEAN. Doing so you would take a considerable hit on the value. Good luck with sale.

There are some great contacts for Escrow here, like Miner Jones.

I don't trust anyone that sells a car with a washed out engine bay; I'm not cleaning the coin. 🥂

How does escrow normally work here?  I'm not used to saying "hey other user do you wanna facilitate this transaction"; normally I'd go through, like, a Whole Escrow Service.  But, if this environment has high-trust go-betweens, I'm happy to leverage that instead, if I can grok the trust system.

If you want to get ALL the money for it on here, mail it to miner Jones and let him run the auction, being he is one of the most trusted sellers on here, having him facilitate, it will bring the best price, he charges around a 1% escrow fees, (worth every penny) plus shipping and handling, if you’re not in a hurry for the money, he can for a small fee get it graded and you cover the grading costs and you can get a graded before you run the auction.  That’s what I would do if it was my coin.   Have a great night . :)

Sometimes its better to authenticate over grading when condition not necessarily the best. Its hard to tell from pictures and even more so when looking at it on my iphone but if it were a regular coin i would guess extra fine circulated. Just my humble opinion on a picture, take this with a grain of salt.

That makes sense.
