Title: Why is Halloween not being celebrated in our forum yet this year?
Post by: Notyourkeys Notyourcoin on October 26, 2023, 02:19:57 AM
We are all familiar with Halloween day and we all know about this day. The word Halloween originated around 1745. It originated in the Christian community. The word Halloween' or 'Halloween' comes from the Scottish word 'All Hallows' Eve'. The word Halloween means 'holy evening or holy evening'. Over time, the word 'Hallow's Eve' was transformed into 'Halloween'. The main theme of the Halloween festival is 'to face the power of death through humor and mockery'. About 2000 years ago, Celtic people lived in present day Ireland, England and Northern France. The first day of November was celebrated by them as New Year or 'Sah-win'. They thought it was the end of summer and darkness or the beginning of winter. Surprisingly, the Celtic nation believed that the night of the last day of October was the worst. The night that all ghosts and unsatisfied spirits can harm people. And so members of the Celtic nation wore various types of ghost masks and clothes on this night. They used to go around together in a circle wearing masks and chanting mantras to pass the sleepless night.

We saw in our forum that last year a contest was started to celebrate Halloween from 7th of October but why not this year.

But won't the contest start this year in our forum. I want to know the opinion of the experienced about the start of this contest.

Probably, he is talking about 🎃 [ANN] Bitcointalk Bitcoin Pumpkin Carving Contest 🎃 (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=5416347.0) that was organized by ChiBitCTy last year. Some people were expecting the same contest again, but I am not sure if ChiBitCTy has any plans to organize the contest this year. Last time, he created the contest thread in the first week of October month. But this is the last week of this month. So, I guess there is no contest for this year. I don't know if ChiBitCTy has spoken out anything regarding this.

The best thing about these kinds of contests is they draw all the cheaters & alt accounts, making them easy to identify.

I know the contests are born out of purely good intentions, but as we've also seen with the pizza and art contest (as well as all the price prediction contests & free raffles), they attract a lot of users without consciousnesses. Anything that has to do with free money will attract scumbags who won't respect the rules -- that's just how its always been, long before bitcoin.

These competitions are not official in the forum. They are usually personal initiatives initiated by some members of the forum to create some kind of interest and attract attention to such occasions.

Therefore, I do not think that they are official events related to the forum, and you do not necessarily see them every year. Most likely, some members create threads on some public religious or social occasions, but perhaps this year no one started them.

What's the relation between Halloween and Bitcoin?

Not only about Halloween, we're all familiar with Black Friday, Winter/Christmas, Easter Egg, Valentine's Day, New Year/Holiday, etc, but those aren't related with Bitcoin. But it's free for any user want to create an event or contest to celebrate it.

I'd like to see the forum to celebrate Bitcoin's Birthday, HODL (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=375643.0), etc.

Halloween is not an occasion that everyone celebrates in all parts of the world, and I do not think that there is a universal event for many countries in the world. Even April Fools’ Day, which is held here annually, may not be known to more than a third of the world’s population.
You can find such events in local boards, where you are more likely to find people from the same country, religion, or race, but it is much more difficult in a multinational forum. What kind of celebration do you expect, changing the forum background, creating a topic, or what?

There are simply far betters things for Theymos and the devs(if there are) to do than to host a (Halloween celebration).

..you know.. like.. working on the mythical supposedly 'new' forum software.

If you really wanted one though, feel free to host it yourself!

Op, there are currently 2 Halloween contest going on now in the forum. I guess you just didn't check properly or wasn't aware. There's one hosted by @User U and 500 casino of which will end very soon, on the 31st of this months.
500 CASINO 🎃 Halloween Artwork Event 👻 $1,000 Prize Pool 🕷1 Oct - 31 Oct 2023 (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=5468774.msg62928748#msg62928748)

https://www.talkimg.com/images/2023/10/26/TJmq3.jpeg

The other which was just launched by @ Hhampuz and Roobet will end on the 14th of November so I guess you still have enough time to participate in this one.
Roobet.com | Art Contest "Halloween" | $2500 up for grabs! | Ends Nov. 14th (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=5471545.msg63050471#msg63050471)

I can literally see the disappointment of those who have registered a bunch of alternative accounts, expecting quick fishing for merit. I've seen discussions in some of the most active local sections of the past year, and I'm willing to bet that's where there's a lot of anticipation and impatience. Likewise, I wonder if we open a competition without the condition that posts will be judged on merit, will it have the same popularity? :)

OP, I don't think anything like that would happen this year. If it were supposed to happen, it would have happened already. It's almost the end of October. Also, this kind of contests gives out opportunity to merit farmers to farm merits. So it's better if it doesn't happen. It doesn't serve any betterment for the forum.

..you know.. like.. working on the mythical supposedly 'new' forum software.
Is the new mythical super software has any release date? Infinity & beyond...  ;)

It's not an official forum celebration, you don't have to demand for it.
If we're lucky enough to celebrate this moment, contributors will organize such a contest with personal funds every year. Besides, I don't expect it to happen this year, I'm busy IRL. ;D

Create your own event and maybe someone will celebrate it with you.

Bitcoin Pizza bake-off contest! was by Cyrus (Administrator)  I think this is the reason for the user's question here in the Meta section.

What's the relation between Halloween and Bitcoin?
An easy way to earn Merits.
The last pizza challenge[1] last time added a big boost to many users and is considered the ideal place for alt-accounts farms.

Guess what the country he talked about in his first post. ;D

I think everyone can already see it, and as Z_MBFM said, they were going to get a gold medal in pumpkin carving this year. :)

It is unfortunate that the forum does not limit the registration of accounts by IP addresses. There would be fewer such participants if a maximum of 3–4 accounts could be registered from one IP address.
Now we will observe how the transfer of merit will be carried out between failed pumpkin carvers.

Since the author of the contest ChiBitCty never made it to be an official compulsory occasion that must be held each October of the year then it's nobody's business to inquire why it didn't hold by this time of the year. If anyone loves the competition that much they can sponsor it on his behalf  ;D

The contest is being abused with loads of merits farming alts of unintentional contestants so if it doesn't hold this year it didn't change a thing within the community. At least let some persons be disappointed and let the funds that would have been spent on the rewards be directed to victims in conflicts area that needs it more than we do. There's always another year for the contest if it's to hold again.

It maybe wouldn't be as popular as the last year's one but rest assured there would be bunch of them who would be happy with even a few merits.

If you look well into the activities that comes along with the celebration of Halloween on this forum, it is the forum members that take responsibility for this activities and not the forum itself, maybe i should say that the incident of bitcoin pump market these days has been the trending event that has taken over people's mind from remembering about this, people are really more inclined to the current market conditions maybe than any other side activities for now, or maybe they forgot, or don't have adequate time in making preparation for this ahead of time.

True, but this contest can be fun and they bring a lot more activity in forum.
Last pizza making contest had some worst a antu-Italian pizzas I ever saw in my life, made with potato, lemon, etc  ::)
That being said I really dont care about halloween at all.

It maybe wouldn't be as popular as the last year's one but rest assured there would be bunch of them who would be happy with even a few merits.
Can we see more items made from lemons, potatoes, rice and other weird stuff for next contest please?  :D

Quite funny to see people who have never actually celebrated this being so eager for the forum to have another competition.
Now, what are the chances of this "newbie" explaining to us the history of Halloween actually committing some plagiarism or at least some text spinning?

those contest that you see happen every year are usually organized by forum members, it is not an official forum event/contest so don't expect contest like the last year's pumpkin carving contest to happen every year.

anyway, I saw a member posted that casino500 and Roobet are having their Halloween contest, you can join there.

There's no doubt about it - especially if a newbie asks why the same contest wasn't held this year. Contest thread like this are abused by some users as a way to easily earn merit - in fact I wouldn't be at all surprised if they were just doing it for the sake of merit and joining signature campaign.

Halloween contests are not mandatory - but are certainly expected by some people with good skills. Some people abuse it - others really want to win the contest without thinking about how much merit they can get.

Some people are also attracted because of the merits received from joining the contest. I know that many forum members know this that many of the participants receive merit joining the contest. I am also participated in a contest before to have fun while doing what I am going to submit either I receive a merit or not. Well, most of it are about earning free money as you have stated that people who are cheaters will do what they do best and that is to cheat.

I made such a comment because something like this happened last year that I have witnessed. op opened account on 19th and looking for pumking contest. then you can understand how some account farmers are preparing for pumking. you know very well how many accounts were created from the last Pamking content mr lovesmayfamilis. So I think it is better not to repeat such content and if it is done then there should be a minimum rank limit to join the contest and below that rank no one should be allowed to win content award and for any kind of Smerit.
There are other contests like Pamking Contest like Pizza Contest, Pie Baking Contest which are used for account farming too.

But you registered just a few days ago, how do you know about last year's Halloween contest?  :P

Oh, I'm sure it's just a coincidence. OP probably joined the forum with the noble intention of diving deep into the world of Bitcoin, but quite by accident stumbled upon last year's Halloween contest buried down in the "Collectibles" board, locked and forgotten for over eight months. So he decided to ask about it in the Meta board, as any other newbie would. Nothing strange about that.
