I am new to Bitcointalk and I have been around my local board since from my sign up yesterday, I wanted to asked this question over there but need a general knowledge from the community at large not only from my locals. Just as what I have used on my title I want to know the possible ways to avoid scammer and phishing sites because I have came to understand that for one to excel in this forum and in bitcoin investment / holding at large, one needs to be very mindful with the ways we click on sites, where we store our funds and the techniques scammers often use to scam beginners like us.

I think security should be my number one priority as a fresher or newbies, although with time I will gets acquainted with the relevant information across the forum, I know that here is a lovable and a dedicated community that focuses on full discussion about bitcoin and its related cryptocurrencies which I can't easily outline all but I know you people knows about them taking a picture from coimmarketcapitalization (CMC).

Please we can share and discuss responsibly without any forms of comments.

There is no free money. If someone offers you something which feels like a huge profit, that's most likely a scam.
When I was a beginner, I was introduced to Pump and Dump groups by one of my friend. What they do is pump a coin and they share which coin they will pump in the group with thousands of people.

What exactly they do is:
- Find a low Mcap coin with very less volume
- Buy that coin before announcing
- Once bought,  they announce  it in the group
- People start buying, they dump on them

It's almost free money for them. So, do not join groups like these. Stay away from Telegram.

From you explanation it seems you have answered some part of the questions you asked because you pointed out some ways of avoiding being scammed which is very correct. Another ways you need to look at for so that you won't be scammed is giverways and airdrops, alot of people has been scammed because of free gift which sometimes comes in form of BTC, avoid opening site where you see free giveaways of btc they are all scam and as a newbie, do not go about asking strangers for help because most people you meet online will pretend to help you but at the end all they want to do is to take all your funds.

The first and most important thing in this space is security, from scammers and from one’s own negligence. My first tip in avoid scammers from getting to you either by fake projects, promises or exposing your keys is to never be greedy thinking that here is a get rich quick scheme, scammers easily exploit those people and lure them to fake projects or get their keys from them. Nobody is generous enough to give you a lot of money so be wary of fake promises.

Secondly is to use a secure wallet for bitcoin and cryptocurrencies hodling, a good wallet is an open source, non-custodian and offline wallet. Make sure to download from the right source to avoid phishing or fake wallet or you can verify them.

Scammers will always look for loopholes to gain access to your funds, so you have to prevent them from gaining access. Social media is the main breeding ground for scammers. They will always present deals that are attractive and difficult to resist. Don't be greedy to accept these deals because they can be baits to steal from you. Avoid clicking on any link you see on the internet because they might not be safe. Do your research on any project before investing because it is important to verify everything information we come across in the crypto space.

But my advice to newbies is to focus on only Bitcoin because it is the most reliable cryptocurrency. Consider keeping your coin in a trustworthy decentralized wallet preferably an air-gapped electrum wallet or a hardware wallet. Also, ensure that you download the Electrum wallet from the Electrum website to avoid falling victim to scammers. 

For you to be able to avoid scammers you should learn to not be greedy; that’s one of the main reasons why scammers are able to lure people into their trap and also the reason why people still fall for scams that are obvious. If you’re able to avoided being greedy when it comes to free money online and bonuses you should be able to do well coupled with being security conscious, i.e know when not to download files from unknown sources and also when to avoid even clicking links as a while those could help you from hackers and scammers as well.

Welcome to the forum and congratulations for Finding the forum, you asked a very reasonable question, one of the biggest reason why scammers thrive is because their victims are ignorant, greedy and just completely careless.
Scams are not of same category, we have the social media scam, hacking, ICO or project scams where scammers organises a project with the aim of scamming their investors.

If you are a computer user, the best way to avoid being scammed without knowing is to avoid using pirated software, and OS always makes sure you get your software from licenced distributors to avoid buying already affected software, as clipboard viruses and other unidentified viruses are sweeping off users holdings without their knowledge.
 
And if you plan to buy and hold a large amount of bitcoin or any other crypto, an online wallet is not the best choice; you will need to get yourself a hardware wallet, as it's more secure when used carefully.

To avoid scammers and other cybercriminals, you have to know that you cannot be caught slipping. You need to always maintain consciousness about your security and ensure that you do not let your guard down even for a small moment. Thank you for your guidance and I know you all are experienced members that's why I am sticking to this forum, actually my Major concerns was about some news I do hear over the internet how people get hacked and their funds got stolen or even how some groups of people do launched project at the ends they dump empty tokens on their investors, just similar to what you explained above so I am trying my possible best to make sure I didn't experience any difficulty or even as a victim because I know it's very hard to save money to invest in digital asset especially the sudden rise of dollars against our local currency.

So it's very difficult for one to raise money and convert them to dollars before buying bitcoin, I want to make sure all my money spent are in a better place rather than going to waste it in unknown place or to the hand of scammers these are what propelled me to create this topic in other to be guided with my investment.

I appreciate your question, my advice for you to avoid fraudsters on the internet is don't be easily tempted by anything on the internet, there are many fraudsters who take advantage of people's greed to make a profit for themselves, besides that, don't be too friendly with people you just met on the internet, there are many fraudsters who pretend to be friends or good people on the internet, even though in fact they are trying to find a way to trick you, the internet world is full of deception, always verify whatever you find on the Internet first.

Scam is not what can just come to you like that without you being involved in the process that aid them to attack you, make sure you avoid any unnecessary downloads from unsolicited website or link address, don't expose your private keys to the public and avoid any third party from having access to any of your devices used.

The cause of getting scammed is when a person is being greedy and when someone or a group of people send that person a message then that person is most likely getting scammed because of being greedy. When a person visit a website and got free money but requires to deposit first before he/she can withdraw the amount is a scam. In these times, there's no such thing as free money (all the time) although there are some cases or times where there's a free money but you can hardly find other so that's why we still believe that there's no such thing as free money. when I read your post I understand the first one but the second is I don't. Well, the thing is it's about being cautious about receiving emails as it might be a fake email sent by scammers pretending to be the original website or as you said mimicking the original. You should complete your post mate so that OP would also understand what you mean because there are parts of your post that isn't complete like the one I pointed out. Anyway, if you suggest to OP using bookmark for the legit website is helpful and yes it is helpful but still it isn't secured 100% as it could also be compromised. Well, bookmarking the legit or real website is surely helpful but it is much better if you typed it yourself and triple check first before pressing enter.

When someone messages or emails you that you've won big money but you can't remember that you have joined any promo then that's an obvious scam.
Another scenario is when someone wants to give you money out of nowhere and you are just randomly picked, there's no free money anymore coming from a stranger nowadays unless that person is a content creator but usually they do it in person. So, going back with these unusual messages to you that they're generously going to give you $xxxxx money, that's already a sign that you have to ignore and delete their message and never respond to any of them.

And if the OP is in telegram, discord and other social media channles, you will likely receive unsolicited offers or PMs.
Ignore them as much as possible as more than likely, they are just looking for naive users that will take their bait.
And when it comes to phishing emails, don't believe too-good-to-be-true emails, because the chance is they are really bogus.

Usually scammers takes in the form of a good samaritan that will lend or give you free money but its a total opposite of it since they will lure you and when you are already hooked then they will start doing their hidden agenda. That being said, in order to protect your Bitcoin from scammers, you should keep it offline, if your Bitcoin is kept in an online computer, you are definitely going to use that device to browse and click on random links and you can't be certain if those links are safe or not. Always think realistically. If some new projects used the word "GUARANTEE", and "RISK-FREE" then yes it's a guarantee - GUARANTEED SCAM. If a new project says that it will give you 10% monthly, that's a scam. If a project says that you will not lose your money if you invest it into them, then it's a scam. TBH, I don't want to overcomplicate things, and thinking of many ways to know which are scams and which are not.

There are many Youtube videos that are giving some tips for newbies on how not to get scammed, but basically this is what I'm thinking whenever I want to invest into something. A scam project will promote high returns because that's what makes a project attractive to the investors. Well that's the common way, but point is, there are many ways for you to identify is they're scamming you or not.

Many are going to hate this but to safe my sanity I just have to do it, stay away from strangers online, Ninenty-nine percent of strangers come to your DM to take advantage of you, forget how nice they can sound in the first place, that's part of their plans, to make you feel relaxed. They will use you and they will dump you, do not give room to any strangers online.

If you are someone who likes using social media platform make sure you set your PM to friends only, do not allow PMs from strangers, because they can decide to text you malicious link with some words that will make you want to check the link out, privatize everything you do online.

The last one from me is You, we all have greed in us all, but some things are obviously impossible, there is no free money out there, not in this crypto space or anywhere, do not become a victim to your own greed, there is no way to double your BTC or other assets, you need to learn a skill if you want to start earning in digital currency, nothing comes for free.

You need to understand how cryptocurrency industry work and you shouldn't fall for wrong claims by devs if you want to trade some tokens in the market since most of them will tell that their token will go the same with bitcoin. So be suspicious all the time and when you look for tokens better to research more information about the project so that you would provably know if they have good chances to last long or even get a good pump base to the tech or solution to offer on their investor or community.

I would say that your local Nigerian section board is very good at understanding all the little things that can come from scammers. When you come to evm chains, scams can get bit complicated. Suppose, particular dapp asks you to sign a message and the data shown is not readable by you, avoid that site.

When it comes to securing yourself from scammers, education is everything, scammers always think and create a scheme to scam others, update old method, and find new people to implement old trick, nothing beats educating yourself on how scammer works if you know how these scammers work nothing can harm you even new method will not apply, but you should not stop educating yourself, scammer never sleeps and studying their target so you should be updated on the trending scamming and hacking method.

Scammers uses different means to scam people and if you are not wise enough to always detect scam when you see one, then you will end up becoming victim. Some scammers can DM you on Facebook, WhatsApp, Twitter now X, telegram and any other social media, they could send emails to you with phishing links and other offer thant can entice you. Sometimes too, scammers can send some email pretending to be binance or some CEX that you know and it will ask you to claim a free reward or do some task which if you dear to follow their instructions, it could cause you your asset. Trade with caution and don't trust anyone. 

Exactly you can't avoid scammers but you can reduce your risk by not clicking on different links you receive in your phone because they can get access to your phone details and lead you to lose your coins and now that scammers are more clever and advanced in their technique they use different ways to confuse people just keep your security save don't trust anyone because sometimes the person you trust will cheat you later, just try and be making more research on internet And all of these online platforms that will send you links to download their app in order to gain access to them may be a fraud if you simply click on it they get access to your all details in your phone and he can lead you of losing fund.

That's for sure, there will be bunch of messages from those platforms because those have became the den of thieves, scammers and everything. If he's going to take the bait then it will be a nonstop inquiry of these scammers on him trying to get some pennies on him. Actually not just pennies but most likely a lot of money or his entire lifesavings that's in the form of crypto.

Just forget about them and don't even give them chance by looking at any of those. Never be curious what's the content of it because if you have received some that type of emails before then it will never stop anymore because it's already recorded on these scammers and will continue to send you an attempt.

Try to avoid doing your cryptocurrency stuff on your daily computer. If possible use a dedicated machine to handle your wallet.

Don't click on links in emails or on the web when you don't see or understand where that link takes you. If in doubt, don't click.

There are other sources of details, too. While I know about Bitcoin for more than a decade, I still visit above site regularly to brush up details that might've faded from my memory.

Think about your personal risks to loose money and coins. It's mostly a personal thing which depends on how and where you live. There are common best practices but your situation can be special. Others already said to download only from official sources. Never skip to properly verify the authenticity of downloaded software, be it a wallet or something else. Learn that first how to do it. You will find various threads here for this purpose.

Think early to buy and use a hardware wallet properly. A hardware wallet shields your precious private keys from potentially malicious software or an unsecure computer. Learn early how to use a hardware wallet properly (don't believe your computer, always verify all the details of a to be signed transaction solely on the hardware wallet's own display). Stay away from Ledger crap, it's closed-source firmware from a lying company. There are better hardware wallets on the market than the shit that Ledger sells you. If you want all sorts of shitcoins to be covered by your hardware wallet than I'd say you're already a lost case, but that's my very personal opinion.

If you stumble upon some good offer, think twice and try hard to answer the question: where does the profit come from? Think at least twice if you listen to some dudes on Youtube or whatever (a)social media you pay attention to. What's the goal of the messenger, where does his or her money come from? What's his or her motive to "sell/promote" you something?

And there's usually no easy, fast and effortless way to get rich quick. Scammers try to sell you that what doesn't exist in real life.

I wonder how people believe that a total stranger could make them rich. I mean someone who possibly might not be of the same nationality with you. If it were that easy, the stranger would have help all their relatives before remembering a random person online. The best  thing to do as you recommended is to avoid strangers.

Exactly mate,  this is the reason I do not and I have never participated in any Binance and of CEX campaign or give aways. It is not always easy to distinguish the real and the fake promotional offers.

Scammers are always coming up with different strategies on a daily basis, and some might not even be mentioned by anyone here because it might be the latest strategy and anyone might not have experienced it on the forum here. So if you want to stay safe from scammers, firstly, you have to be smart. There is always a red flag in every scam strategy, so it’s left for you to detect the red flag.
 
Secondly, make sure you download the appropriate wallet, make sure the wallet you will be downloading is a non-custodial wallet, and download it from the right source. You have to properly secure your private key, it should be secured in a place where there can never be an internet connection, it should be completely offline. The safest way, which I think is the best way to secure a private key, is to carve it on an iron steel and secure the iron steel in a safe place.
 
Avoid downloading unnecessary or untrusted applications, scammers can use that to easily access your devices, and there are lots of fake bitcoin wallets out there. You have to be careful, scammers are doing everything just to make sure they defraud people. That’s why we have to be smart.

If you have the courage enough, you could confront them by sending them a direct message to confirm the authenticity of their identity. Very importantly, you want to trust your gut if you have a bad feeling about someone you're talking to on the internet you want to listen to those instincts.

I will recommend you just buy bitcoins and hold for now, until you've learn well the security features you  should observe when having other dealings in bitcoin.
If you must trade or gamble, have a different wallet you use for these things, do not link your main wallet to any exchange, or any shitcoin airdrop cos that's the fastest way to get your funds stolen by scammers. In 2022, I saw a  colleague at the office get disposed of her hard earned coins simply because she used her main wallet to try getting an airdrop then, without knowing its a trap. She  linked her wallet to the site and in minutes, all her coins were gone and she was greatly pained.

Most scammers use phishing sites .So,newbies should be careful of where they sign-up or connect thier wallet. Because scammers don't care never care .They will still your funds and feel comfortable doing so. So, the best way to be careful is by staying away from some useless website registration airdrops or wallet connection airdrops. With this ,no one will know your details and guess any of your information.

You have to be faster than the cheaters to avoid being cheated by the cheaters. But if the cheaters are faster than you, you will get cheated at some point. Another thing I noticed when messaged in telegram group for exchange support, after a while after sending message I see one after another PM's and when I check PM I see account created matching admin name of particular exchange and that account PM me .In the beginning it was difficult for me to understand who is real and who is fake but later I understand the difference between real and fake and I am now one step ahead of fraudsters so that I don't get scammed.

A stranger come to my telegram yesterday and ask me about a certain project if I have bought it, then I answered yes, he claimed he have done the same very early and he already make up to ten times his money, I congrats him.

We stopped talking, and this morning he named a coin that I should go and buy it early before it pumped, I knew where it's all going but I decided to have some fun, so I did my research using coin gecko and coinmarketcap, I found out that the coin isn't even listed yet, then he decide to drop me a smart contract.

He told me to add the smart contract on uniswap and make purchase, I believe he created the fake token himself and named it the same name as the upcoming project, what a good way to scam strangers who don't know much about crypto, I listened to him this far to know or learn about his scamming trick, right from the beginning I knew he is a scammer.

Strangers seeking attention do more damage to crypto beginners than anything else, do not give your attention to them, set your social media app to receive messages only from friends and family, if you have any question to ask about crypto, create topic about it on this forum.

One of the way to avoid scammers here  in the forum is never be in haste to make a deal or too fast to accept an offer from strangers.  Scammers always approache people first to offer what can't be gained for free . Regarding the phishing sites, personally what i do, is before clicking any LINK, I go to google and search for the name of the thing I am looking for. If it is regarding a project , COIN, TOKEN etc. the best thing to do is to visit Coinmarketcap.com and navigate to the website of the project from there.

This way you are going to be sure you are navigating to the official website and not to any phishing site.

What I often do to avoid this is by increasing my foresight and maintaining caution and intuition. However, if something feels strange, you should be alert and check further before continuing.

Ignore replying PM's from unsolicited member's in the forum that might come to you claiming to want to help you make profit through a business plan or token. If you find such PM's don't hesitate to flag them to the community.

Mostly these links I have received through the telegram which are so even sometimes disgusting because I was busy sometimes in an important work and suddenly saw some notifications on the Telegram which are of these scammers and I mostly received them. May be there is a way to lock the telegram and put some security to now receiving messages from the strangers and not even they message you. Well, you have to guard your private key/mnemonic phrase like your live depends on it. Do not let anyone see it because anyone who has it has access to your funds. Additionally, be careful on what apps you download on your phone,  what software you download on your laptop, what browser extensions you use, even the websites you visit. Don’t store your private key/mnemonic phrase online. If you must, you have to encrypt it and store it where it’ll make no sense if anyone saw it (doesn’t mean you should show it to anyone). Most of scammer always find target who think they are greedy in crypto. Don't trust any giveaway in social and that giveaway linked any fake websites. Scammer always find target and do tag or DM the target. If you have any problem with any official project don't ask in their group chat like a Discord or Telegram. Just call CS/ call support in their project ( better you send with email ). Because if you ask your problem in chat group, fake admin from that group will send you private message.

Be satisfy with what you have as a newbies because, if you are not satisfy with what you have that is were scammers use to come in to scam people with fake information that will make them believe that they want to become a great woman or man, not knowing that he or she is in the hands of the scammers.  Don't allow other people achievement to make you feel that you are not making progress or you are not doing the right thing in the Bitcointalk platform when you know you are doing the right thing just that the results is delay but just be patience everything will surely come to reality.
