I have a pdf with a password, encrypted with 128 bits, I have no idea what the password is, I have already tested combinations of 8 characters mixed together with Hashcat, is there any other way to solve it, since it is a pdf?

If you don't mind me asking who's the owner of the PDF?
How are you sure that it's a combination of 8 characters and not 12?
Since you brute forcing, You just have to keep going and maybe consider that the password might be complex or Longer.
I think there are app for cracking PDFs but usually for one's with simple password.

The owner of the PDF is a client of my, he had an account with an exchange called aximetria, this exchange went bankrupt and sent him the encrypted PDF. He received the password via SMS on his cell phone, but he no longer has the number and has never seen it. I don't know how many characters the password is, I tried 1-8 characters at random with all the combinations according to my program and the hardware I have. Above 8 characters, for example 9 characters, all combinations are impossible to test. Also because the password can be more than 20 characters long. The strange thing is that usually passwords in pdfs are much simpler, as you said.

It's best to contact the cell provider or the telecom that he has registered with that number. He can ask an attorney for him to request that number back to him for important filing like this if ever the provider denies his request.

There are too many tutorials about how to unlock PDF with a password without using one. But I doubt that none of them will actually work but instead will leave you some malware/virus as they require to download a software that's unknown.

I have already advised my client to contact a lawyer, I have some software to crack the pdf password, the problem is that the password is 8 characters too long, the processing power is unfeasible.

Find more in some other tech-focused forums maybe there have been folks that have done this in the past. Because it seems that you'll not get any help from anybody here even I, I don't know what to say further.

I've already advised my client to go to a lawyer and file a lawsuit against the operator, I've actually tested all the possible combinations up to 8 characters and it didn't work. Sometimes luck isn't with us haha

The key is the 128 bit encryption - it does not matter what is encrypted.

You have a man that can try trillions of passwords a second, and do better than brute force/guessing?

I've tried all the combinations with 8 characters, 9 characters upwards, I've run out of hardware.

How did you solve the problem?

The problem has been solved with quantum cracking, but you won't be aware of the solution for about twenty years or so - less if someone looks directly at it.  :/

Sarcasm means you don't understand how encryption works.  :)
