Title: wrong seed electrum
Post by: wesleybruce on April 01, 2014, 09:53:13 AM
I seem to have reinstalled electrum 1.9.1 after a crash and opened it with the wrong password or something.  :-[ No bitcoins found but when I try to open it again after un-installing/ re-installing its skips the restore from seed step. I can't correct the mistake.

I have 1.8.1 on a flash chip that works fine and shows the BTC all there. ???  but I've stuffed up my instillation of 1.9.1 obviously.  :'( Help!

I don't know 1.9.1 that well, but there should be a Create/Restore item on the File menu.  You could also start it at the command line using the -w command with a wallet identifier that doesn't exist:

./electrum -w let-me-restore-my-wallet.dat

when I try to open it again after un-installing/ re-installing its skips the restore from seed step. I can't correct the mistake.

This is because the first time you opened it, it created a wallet in your data-folder.

The data-folder is not deleted when Electrum is uninstalled, and because of this, it detects the wallet you created before (the one that was unsuccessful) and automatically loads it.

What are you trying to restore your wallet from? Are you restoring your wallet from seed? or are you trying to restore a wallet file?

Also, why must you use 1.9.1? I suggest 1.9.8, as it will restore your seed just fine and you'll get better support.

Sorry fellows it is 1.9.8 the 1.9.1 is a typo.
Thanks for the help. I know what I did wrong not I'll go hunting the other part of the installation.  Why doesn't windows tell you these things it once did?
Yes I'm restoring from seed but made an error. I'll try the command line.
