So it's not such a good idea, but it will hold for some time, and YMMV.
I remember I've read on this forum that powered molex are to be used if you're using to drive more than 4 GPU's on a motherboard. I have 4x5850 GPU's attached to a motherboard with non powered molex risers, and doing fine with such setup. I can't give you opinion on your motherboard, just try it, it should be the least part to worry about in your current setup. If you had to I would start w/ 3 GPU and then look to expand w/ first months revenue. You can always add more GPU but you are unlikely to every replace PSU unless it dies.
On the risers I don't know. I don't use em (3x5970 in a MB w/ x16 slots spaced two apart). Not saying it is impossible but to make your rig more complicated to save $40 and (as OP indicated) do so at reduced efficiency just doesn't make any sense to me. Then again I got 5 rigs to manage so I like them .... simple. I have all my card overclocked and they are running pretty good.
