kill-a-wut?

I think the first image you linked isn't an actual kill-a-watt brand.  It's just a similar device.  I've been wrong before though.

looks like a multi country socket

USA is 2 slits
Europe is 2 round pins
UK is 3 rectangular

you can also get 3 round pins in a row, 3 round pins in a triangle, 3 slits in a triangle

That's an international multi-plug. The real Kill-a-Watt to the best of my knowledge don't offer a model like that. Not saying it's bad but it's probably from China and available super cheap on eBay. Only thing you need to be sure of before buying is that it handles 120V as well. Having an international plug may indicate that it's 240V and finding dual-voltage Kill-a-Watts is no easy task. I tried because I'm in Thailand (240V) but wanted one good for back home too (120V).

Well, the 700W one is kind of useless for this type of thing. Good for measuring your TV set etc. You definitely want the 3000W one. Strange they put an international socket when it only supports 90-150V range. Maybe in South America they have Euro/UK style plugs with 120V? Otherwise, in the most of the world it's just an invitation to burn it out by thinking it accepts 240V when it doesn't.

Aussies, I asked around and apparently these are great: http://steplight.com.au/education/monitor-energy/plug-in-electricity-power-meter/
just ordered myself one.

Ya.... not for US plugs and not even what was shown in the picture. Oh well
Wow. Do you have a photo of the plug style on the one you actually received? I'm just curious and thought Cablesaurus was better than this (though I've never dealt with them).

Try,

only $21. Tons of others listed as well. I'm guessing the one you got can be found there too (and no doubt is from China). This one above appears to be the original one shipped from USA.
