Title: Advocacy
Post by: mcqueenorama on April 17, 2011, 01:06:38 PM
How many of you are in the SF Bay Area?  I'd  like to get a few Meetups going here in the SF Bay Area.  I think one in SF and one in SJ.  Are any of you interested?

Here's the description for the New York one:

The number of Bitcoin users around the world is growing at a lightening pace. This Meetup Group is designed for Bitcoin users, merchants, monetary exchange dealers, developers, and consumers -- anyone who's interested in the success of the new totally anonymous digital currency called Bitcoin. Additionally, it acts as a mutual aid society, and a business networking group. Bitcoin Meet-ups in Other Cities Around the World DC - Washington http://www.meetup.com/BitcoinDC NY - New York …

Or perhaps you don't realize that it is optional.

And... "anonymous" came from the NY blurb, not necessarily mcqueenorama...

oh yes - i'm very well aware that anonymity is optional.

but - for me, anyway - i think a low profile is good, until we see how the first legal and/or political challenges shake out.

YMMV.  i went through the sixties and am now going through the craziness of the oughts/teens: and frankly, i have little confidence in the political institutions of even the best of the western democracies.  the trouble with people who have power is that they are the same people who want it.

reckon i'll keep my head down for now...

I'm in SF, I'd be interested.

And a suggestion, you might get more people seeing this if you post with a more descriptive subject, like "SF Bitcoin Meetup Interest?"

More coders need to know about it and plan on using it, more businesses need to start using it, and more people need to know it and trust it.  Not a few more hackers but MANY more regular internet users.  This is a great idea and it will go nowhere unless it gets more traction.

Don't let this be a cool secret.  It will die as a totally cool secret. You guys are coding it and we need the rest of the internet community to adopt it too.  Its too great an technology.  Its got that appealing disruptive nature to it.  It could easily boom as big as the file sharing sites did a few years back.

Come on out and have a meetup!  I'll get one going in SF.  I'll do a pitch for it at the New Tech Meetups.  The Future Salon guys probably would love this too.

Who else is working on this in the Silicon Valley or in the SF area?
