Post by: tekot on January 26, 2012, 09:46:40 PM
Hey everyone im new here and just started mining with guiminer and im getting around 30-35 mhash/s with geforce gtx 550ti overlocked somewhat. Is this normal at all? Im mining in a pool and seems pretty low to me.
Thanks for the help.

yes that sounds right, the Nvidia cards pale in comparison to the RAdeons, see if you can return it for a Radeon card if you want to get better bang for your buck with mining.

It's normal. Nvidia cards fail at mining.

Your mhash is fine.

But for mining, ATI cards are much better. My 6950 do like 340mhash/s for example.

Unfortunately I got some old GTX 260's too (~45 mhash/sec)...

Should sell mine and look for 5870's but it seems like all the decently well priced ones sold by people are bought up so quickly...

Hoping to maybe talk a couple people on Craigslist in my area down on the prices (they want $180 and $200 respectively).

Here is a very good comparison of mining hardware. Take your pick from here:

I've chosen Radeon 6950, getting around 340 MH/s for one card. With memory downclocked one 3-card rig is drawing less then 400W.

If you are payig for your own electricity, O wold advise that you stop immediately, as you are spending moe on electricity than you will make from mining.

That's about right, OP.

I started out with GTX 260 (40-60 MHPS) and a GTX 560 (100-150 MHPS). From reading these forums for about a month or so, I realized the Nvidia cards were terrible for mining but I wanted to get an idea of Bitcoin mining before I bought an ATI. I was mining with these GTX cards when BTC was trading at $2 USD (LOL!) and losing about a dollar a day or so.

Once I got a hang for the software, pools, hardware, etc with the Nvidia cards, I went out and bought ATI.

Cheers!

It doesn't work that way buddy. If you purchased a half-decent mining card as soon as you realized the mistake you had made, you would not have been pouring money down the drain in the first place.

Once I got a hang for the software, pools, hardware, etc with the Nvidia cards, I went out and bought ATI.
That makes it sound as if mining with AMD cards is somehow magically harder than with nVidia cards... that's the costly approach again, you needed to switch ASAP.

The only piece of advice I can give the OP is, grab some AMD cards ASAP and when they arrive sell your nVidias to recover some funds quickly.

Sorry that I wasn't clear on my post but that's my fault. Just to clarify, I started with Nvidia cards because I already had them for a while. I believe I had the GTX 260 since 2008 or so.

Cheers!
