Title: WARNING about intersango/britcoin!!!
Post by: disapointed_999 on January 28, 2012, 04:32:26 PM
Hello everybody,

Just registered to warn you about using Intersango/Britcoin.

Couple of weeks ago I was pleased to see bitcoin exchange rate going up again so decided to buy some bitcoins. I put some money into Intersango account on the 17th January.
The funds did not get credited to my account so I tried contacting Intersango support and got a reply on the 19th Jan:

Quote
Hi,

UK banking is currently offline.

We do not have access to online banking due to a technical error on LLoyds' side.

We await a resolution from LLoyds.

Patrick

I read later on Intersango/Britcoin thread in Project Development that all issues were resolved on the 20th Jan.
https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=4984.msg704313#msg704313 (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=4984.msg704313#msg704313)

Unfortunately, even today(28th Jan) I have no access to my money. I tried sending another 2 messages to support on 24th and 26, but now they are just ignoring me.

What's more, this morning I received an email from Intersango saying:
Quote
Dear users,

We have enjoyed providing people for many months now with a safe and reliable place to buy bitcoins. We are proud to be the only exchange owned and operated by core bitcoin developers.  This is why, despite not charging any commission, we have proven ourselves to have the highest level of professionalism, security and customer support in an industry where it is not the norm.

In a week however, we will be monetizing and charging a small 0.65% fee on trades as of 2012-01-03 24:00 GMT to keep Intersango running. This will allow us also to develop Intersango even further and provide even faster responses and more importantly faster resolutions to support inquiries.

We are proud of our long history since our inception as Britcoin; a free and safe way for people in the UK to buy and sell bitcoins. It was an early experiment and its unexpected growth forced a rethink.

Patrick Strateman led the development of the new platform; Intersango. Over several months with a fulltime team of 3 programmers it was crafted to take us from our humble basement origins with the experienced gained from operating Britcoin.

Due to it's success and growth we are proud to keep Intersango in operation. We will continue to provide fast, secure and honest service without underhanded marketing and with absolutely no hidden fees.

Intersango

So now not only that I don't know if I ever get my money back, but even if I do, I will be charged to use it.
In my opinion, this is beyond a joke.
My advice to you - use other exchanges to buy bitcoins.

You are not alone! I wired some money to Intersango on the 23rd after they claimed that all of their problems were resolved. The money still doesn't show up in my account and they have not yet replied to a support ticket that I opened on the 25th.

I would not recommend Intersango to anyone.

Britcoin was the original name of Intersango.

They have had banking problems lately which they have been honest and open about.

So they are going to charge a fee, most other exchanges do this anyway.

My experience with them has been good and I'm sure they will resolve your problem.

Yes, they had problems, but they were solved on the 20th. Today is 28th and there is nothing on their website that indicates of any delays. On the contrary, it says
Quote
Transfers are processed several times daily.
Which leads people to thinking they will be able to use their money and buy bitcoins the same or next day after making the deposit.
I've waited 8 days since technical issues got fixed and still nothing.

I don't mind paying a fee, I would even pay a lot more if I could get access to my money today. I just hate not knowing what's happening. Last message I got from them was 9 days ago. This is unacceptable!

They haven't been replying to my emails either. I've been waiting five days for an answer to a straightforward question.

There are currently no tickets waiting a response regarding UK bank transfers.

If you are having trouble send an email to support@intersango.com

I swear to god, if I ever open an exchange I am never responding to customer issues on the forum directly --ever. You respond even once and BAM, the entire forum becomes a cesspool of scattered obfuscated customer support tickets you didn't even know existed, all counting against the business credibility since "you usually frequent here".

It's ridiculous and regardless of whether OP is a liar or the exchange is a scam--- why do people think bitcointalk.org is a customer support center? Ever heard of a phone?

Hello Everyone,

Just to let people know, that today the money was finally credited to my account.
I and probably many people here don't mind paying a little extra or waiting, but you can't leave people in the dark for weeks.
I used Britcoin exchange since it was 2 days old and back then any issue would be resolved in a day or two and what is even more important, attempts to make contact weren't ignored. Please get your act together.

Thank you

Your response indicates to me that you did cash in and mangled the reference code.

Please change the topic of this thread to accurately describe the situation.

That's good to know! My money is still missing but I have received a reply to my support ticket asking for further information. There is hope!  :D

My money has now arrived as well! Here's the reason for the delay according to Patrick (phantomcircuit):

"It looks like the payment was sent using CHAPS, this cuts off the reference code and most of your name to make room for FFLOW in the reference area. In the future if you could try and have your bank send a Faster Payments transfer that would significantly reduce the chances of an issue like this occurring again."

Point taken and thanks for working on the weekend!

It's ridiculous and regardless of whether OP is a liar or the exchange is a scam--- why do people think bitcointalk.org is a customer support center? Ever heard of a phone?

I think they do it because it usually seems to work. Usually when a thread pops up, the problem gets fixed.

I agree with you though, it seems like this should be easily resolved through the exchange's website or contact info. From the frustration I've seen from some of these threads, I guess sometimes it isn't.

I can actually completely understand why people do it, they want to be heard when they think nobody is listening.

Doing this with us is actually counter productive.  The time it takes to resolve an issue through the forums is significantly longer than through a support ticket, that means that not only did his issue take longer to get resolved but I wasted probably about an hour (in total) on addressing this thread.

Is it just me, or is Intersango/Britcoin kind of a statist "let's get along with government regulations" type of organization?

Bitcoins are about free market, and these guys seem to be against that. Only offering paxum and dwolla withdrawals is telling (they both require gov't ID).

Usually businesses dealing with fiat currencies also have to deal with the laws regarding dealing with those currencies and be able to show some accountability if they want to remain in business. You may or may not agree with those laws, but good luck remaining in business if you ignore them.

Are you in affiliated with them in any way?
