Title: Forgotten coins
Post by: 2dogs on May 20, 2014, 06:31:28 AM
Before I get rid of some old hard drives, I wanted to make sure I wasn't throwing away any coins I might have forgotten about.

How do you search on your computer/wallets to make sure zero coins are left?

I imagine you'll just have to search for the wallet.dat files. I'd check any known old addresses on the blockchain as well just in case.

Yeah, I did a search for wallet.dat files, and a bunch of "Video CD movies" show up ???

About 11 different coins show up - what ever happened to Feathercoin?

How do you open them to see if anything is inside?

There are tons of files that are stored in .dat format. If you do a search solely for "wallet.dat" that should be all that you find.

You need to put them into the corresponding folders for each different coin client which you probably already have them there if you didn't move them.

Check your /user/*username*/AppData/Roaming folder for any coin folders that may have wallets.

Also search your entire drive for "wallet.dat" files

You have to download their wallets and add that file there.

look for .dat files in your computer. Will return many others results that are not coins, so take some time.

look manually on places that you would put your coins.Dont forget to enable show hidden folders

Install wallets for all coins and replace installed 'wallet.dat' files with your own wallet files

You should look for your private keys (format is .key) too if you have a backup of them. Just search for *.key to get all your private key backups.

I could never forget about my coins, and you should always make a back up of them. Keep them all in one place and you'll be good.

A good way to do this is to run backup software on your computer, and create a folder for your wallets. For example, do this:

Wallets
Wallets/BTC/wallet.dat
Wallets/FTC/wallet.dat

This makes it easy to keep up with all of them, and organizes them.

Apart from searching "wallet.dat", you should also try searching the wallet file name used by other wallet clients just in case (for example, "default_wallet" for Electrum and ".wallet" for Multibit.

Good idea - will do from now on.
