Title: [2014-05-20] National Post: Brave New Digital Currency World
Post by: The Bitcoin Co-op on May 20, 2014, 06:06:56 PM
The National Post in Canada printed a full-page article on QuadrigaCX and Bitcoin, with a shout-out to the Co-op. Check it out: http://business.financialpost.com/2014/05/20/brave-new-digital-currency-world/

Summary:

Quote
Cotten does much more than bring bitcoin enthusiasts together. As founder of Quadriga CX, he has been focused on developing the most secure, easiest -to-use trading platform to simplify the buying and selling of bitcoins for a growing audience. The company’s approach has captured the attention of investors such as VFS Securities, a Vancouver-based venture capital firm that
focuses on Internet startups and other technology-based ventures.

In terms of bitcoin adoption, he believes Canada is at the forefront. “There are more merchants accepting them than in any other country in the world and the government is relatively accepting.”
^^^ I'm really surprised by that, since I had heard at least one (or more) Canadian banks were closing account of customers who dealt with Bitcoin in any way. Obviously many Canadian BTC'ers are doing really well now.  :)

Yep Vancouver has a strong group of individuals
Were not doing so bad over here in YYC as well and YEG has one as well
Always nice to read these type of stories thanks for sharing

As for the Canadian Banks Virtex and other groups have worked around it wire transfers which are what banks were most concerned about have been transferred to moneygram and other groups that way the Banks don't hold all the keys to business and transactions can be processed without all the delays involved with them, just a mindshift in how you do business and adapting to the hostile banking environment.
Even developing systems to address this problem. (Hello Competition)
Anyways it's still early in the game looking forward to more things coming.

We have some good friends in Alberta, like Bitcoin Pete! I would just guess that he's responsible for some of the ATMs there. We favor as many ATMs as possible. :)

As for banks, they can do what they want. The Bitcoin Alliance and the Foundation will fight them in courts and invevitably win; for now, we reach the common people, and the Man has no legal recourse for that. If enough people want Bitcoin, banks will fail if they do not adapt.

In the meantime, Canadian companies have found ways to keep banking operational. QuadrigaCX, for example, has had no problems whatsover, and operates at one of the lowest fees available. Virtex, Vault of Satoshi, and Morrex also still survive. Game on, banks!  8)

I haven't met Bitcoin Pete yet but do know that the Brains are working on their atms.
I will need to drive up to Edmonton and go check out BEMU someday they have the Brains store and various other hangouts in YYC.
The original YYC group fizzled but was restarted so it would be a cool idea to ask Mitch to invite Pete over to the new one sometime bit of an inter provincial hang out since they know each other :).
Even have a nice website set up so the Edmonton group needs to make one or be outclassed friendly rivalries.

Westerners Rise up ^^
The West has had its fair share of political parties good old reform then the alliance then the PC's classic Tory Blue.
So I can see a strong Bitcoin grassroots growing up around here in a few years still in the early years of adoption
Mostly innovators creating the system for the end users.
BC has its Greens so its known for its visions even if we disagree on Pipelines XD
As for the legal cases I think we will win in time but the battle remains to be won give or take a few more years.

But your right in the meantime Virtex has its direct money transfer through moneygrams around Canada
Vault and Morrex as well are growing up Bitcoin is well represented here.
Always more things to look forward too
Game on indeed ^_^

Forgot to mention there is a lamassu in Calgary on standby for a location
But not sure if the Vancouver Lama was ordered first or the Calgary one guess it would be the first operational though
Just noticed a new order for Edmonton neat

The Lamassu's in Vancouver were ordered by Quadriga in October 2013. They were delivered and became operational at the QuadrigaCX office in downtown Vancouver in early January 2014. Those were the first operational Lamassu's in Canada.
