I am a fellow Bitcoin collector and crypto miner working on a reported personal essay about the culture the Bitcoin.

What led me to BTC in late 2012 was a mixture of speculation and the community. I began with the idea that I'd make a quick buck, but quickly became enamored by the hope and selflessness of the community. In short, I began to believe that this could change the way the world uses money, revolutionize charities and give the public economic power.

For my piece, I'd like to hear what brought you to Bitcoin too. If there's anyone out there who'd be interested in talking with me about their experience in the Bitcoin community, or just shoot the breeze about Bitcoin and cryptos for a while, it would help out a lot - no story is too small. If you don't want to share your own story, but know of a good one (like Laszlo's pizza purchase), share below.

I saw a video of an interview where Google CEO Eric Schmidt and Wikileaks CEO Julian Assange talked about it. I looked it up and quickly realised what a quick rise of market price bitcoin went trough. I decided to better hop on the train quickly, hoping for a quick buck. It was then where I realised the advantages of this technology, and that it is much of a bigger thing than I imagined. I started reading the original paper, looking into the code, hanging on the forum etc

You should pick people from varying time periods, interview them, and track the changes in motivations over time.  The culture is evolving.

That is exactly what I intend to do. If you or someone you know are early adopters (pre 2012) who might be interested in participating, please let me know. The culture is certainly evolving, undergoing tremendous change, and I think it's important to make a record of the changes.

When I first got into BTC and scrypt mining, a guy in an IRC chat gave me .25BTC ($25 at the time) after a lengthy convo because "You're not an asshole," he said, and all he asked was that I pay it forward.

It blew my mind. I never asked for anything, and I couldn't figure out why the hell he did that, but then I realized that its part of the growing process. It's necessary to spread the coin around. For a lot of those early adopters, it wasn't about the money, it was about Bitcoin. By giving me some, he had recruited me, in a sense. I thought that was too cool.

So if you all have a story or know someone who does, chime in, or message me directly. As bg002h noted, I need people from all points in the history, from early adopters to newbies.

The accumulated wisdom is that the first wave of adopters were technoidealists...dreamers with computers skills so to speak.

NeXT wave was the "dude, I can buy drugs with this!" wave. Then the speculators came in with the entrepreneurs...now with Bitpay, coinbase, and circle, we are getting ready to get regular folks on board.
