Title: Low Wattage, High Power Server Build?
Post by: lilfiend on May 29, 2014, 01:46:12 PM
Been planning out a new plex server and was wondering what you guys thought/recommended.

Currently I'm looking at an intel C2750 for the CPU, it's an embedded CPU which sucks for upgrades but it's an 8 core 2.4ghz CPU that only takes 25w.

Supermicro (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813182851) and ASRock (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813157475) make motherboards with it but I'm going to have to stick with the asrock one as it's got 12 sata ports on it.

I'm probably going to throw all of this into an older 4u rosewill case with a bunch of 3tb's and call it a day.

I've not really ran any tests on plex though, do you think that I could get away with one of AMD's 2.05ghz 25w quad cores for 3-5 720p-1080p streams going at once?

Neat. That's kinda insane for a low wattage CPU setup. However, if you can grab a full system / recycle another system for like $100, what's the payback time for the super expensive motherboard. $300 is electricity if the new rig is only using say 100 watts more?
