Title: Stay at day job (work or school) if suddenly filthy rich from Bitcoin?
Post by: RUEHL on May 31, 2014, 04:53:01 PM
If you were at work, and suddenly something HUGE happens that hits every news station that has the general public taking flight to Crypto, the price just explodes into the stratosphere whereas your current stash of Bitcoins can last you a lifetime of comfortable living.

Would you continue working?  Get a different job?  Just stop working altogether?

For those in school, being a student is your day job.

having already quit my day job after the success of hoarding coins from the $6/coin days.. i can tell you now.. it gets boring.

if you like your day job and your not doing just as a money earner. keep at it. treat it as your hobby more so then slave labour. something to socialise with customers/colleagues and keeps you active and all th other social stuff.

not having a job is truly boring and you end up spending even more then average, just to fill the void between 9am-5pm. yes i know we can afford it, but thats not the point. its better to continue doing a job you love even if your rich, then to be bored, spending bitcoins wastefully, where they can be left in the hoards, to gain even more riches.

I'd stop working until I get the inspiration and motivation to do something I like to do.

If you get filthy rich, then there is no need to work full time earning close to the minimum wage. But by filthy rich, I mean net wealth over $10 million. Anything less than that, won't last long.

We are meant to work.  Achieving our goals make us happy.  A nice stash of coins gives you more freedom in how you spend your time.  Have the self-awareness to realize that you must do something, and then try to decide what that something might be.  But don't think too much because you can always change your mind!  Consider working in bitcoin space, as it is easy to build or join a network of like-minded people that will be in a similar position to yourself. You can work toward the group's goals while developing a network of friends across the globe!

Since reducing the amount of hours per week I spend on non-bitcoin work, I've become busier than ever!

The key is loving what you do every day.
If your current job is great then stay, if  not replace it or start your own company.

If I got rich suddenly with bitcoin then I would still go to my job because without something stable in your life you probably run out of things to spend your money on and become bored to the fact of taking drugs and fall into a spiral of self destruction.

I would probably keep working but maybe slightly less than now and maybe do some volunteering.
We need goals in our lives I think, not having them would leave me depressed.

I'm already self employed, this would mean I could outsource all the boring parts, instead focus only on the fun parts.

Even when I was a kid I spent my days building/designing/making, being rich would mean I could take it to the next level...

I have a day job that I like, and I have a lifelong hobby that I would like to be able to spend more time on. I have a target $/BTC picked out where I feel I can quit my day job, and devote all my work to what is now my hobby. Even if I did, the roles would probably flip, with me still spending some time in the field of my current job.

Not yet.

Reread the OP, he said _filthy_ rich. You don't need to gain anymore riches when you're already set for life.

I have already quit my job and I am all the happier for it. I volunteer two days a week and spend the rest of my days doing what I like.

BTC is my retirement fund.  At least I hope so.  I would like to do more in BTC but I have to draw the line at overextending myself too much in one area.  I think it will be huge for anyone holding as little as 1 BTC.

if suddenly rich:

-find a job you enjoy and go work there
-go back to school and study something new
-start a business

you will get bored and be tempted with too many destructive activities if you have no job and nothing to do during the day.

also, let's say you dump BTC and find yourself sitting in lots of fiat while the price drops...you'll be tempted to buy back more BTC than you originally had. if you have another source of income you can do that without worrying too much about price

Well I think working and then moving the money to Bitcoin would be the most logical option
Since you are able to increase your income and if your just buying Bitcoin it makes sense to keep working
While taking your check and buying Bits.

I guess it depends what you mean by filthy rich.

Unless you're like Franky and bought in at $6 (you lucky bastard lol ) ... I don't think anyone is getting filthy rich overnight.  I myself have a modest stash of coin, but I expect it will take years to appreciate to 7 figures.

I think you have to have 5 to 10 million net worth to be considered wealthy.  And filthy rich means net worth of 50 to 100 million or more.  My opinion on it.

I would still work if I suddenly became rich...but I would work less.

I'd focus on my hobbies 100% of the time.

It seems stupid to stay at a job and earn money that you don't need. I would only stay at a job if it allowed me to do something that I couldn't otherwise do.

There has been studies and books written about people who win the lottery and/or acquire wealth (and stop working).

Traveling the world gets old.  You don't need to be rich to travel.  I've been to almost 40 countries myself.
 I'll say this about "traveling"

- You spend a lot of time in bars / restaurants (things you can do at home)
- Eventually seeing new landmarks / museums gets old and you go "meh"
- You DO get bored on vacation, all the time.
- Dealing with trains / bus / rental is a pain.
- "friends of convenience", eventually you realize these people you partied with in foreign hostels / hotels you'll never see again.

I listen to a few radio shows hosted by millionaires and see the reality TV shows - their lives aren't any different from ours.  Most of them are planked on the sofa and, if it wasn't for the socialite activities, most would be bored to tears.

Most very rich people occupy themselves with some sort of career, some host on the radio (like the people I listen to), others are venture capitalist (who technically work for almost no money compared to their net worth), et cetera.

Really the only benefit I see from money is security but it's a false security, maybe the security from never being forced to work but you'll have plenty of people trying to steal said wealth from you (women, the banks, et al).

I would stay in my job for at least a year and give myself plenty of time to think about what I can do in the future. I might start a company on something i really enjoy doing. Probably develop one of my hobbies into a business. My general direction would be to setup investments which can give me regular income to support my daily expenses and then start a business with the left over income, so I never spend any of the capital.

This thread, like many others on this forum, is improved by a careful reading wherein you replace all the "ifs" with "whens".

The dollar, yuan, and euro are going to implode sooner or later. All empires collapse in time. This is inevitable. When they do, crypto will be waiting to absorb the wealth.

Which side of the equation do you want to be sitting on, dear reader, when that happens? Think carefully.

Definitely self-employment. Do do whatever I find interesting, and have the freedom to switch to different projects/fields whenever bored. Learn computer programming. Do that a bit. Learn web design - do that. Write books, movie scripts, whatever. Maybe start some bitcoin-related business. But the point is having the freedom to do what you enjoy.

Honestly, I think everyone reading this who has 3+ BTC should throw caution to the wind, quit their jobs now, default on all their debt and live as cheaply as possible.

Eat catfood if you must, it's better than eating shit forty hours a week as someone's wage-slave profit-bitch.

I am surprised nobody pointed out that being unemployed is illegal (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vagrancy_%28people%29), especially if you do not have a high social status.

And currently 3BTC is worth less than $3000. It is advisable to have at least 3 month's savings before doing anything rash.

Rather than eating shit, you can start your own business or do freelancing. I am someone who works close to 70 hours a week. But since I do freelancing, I am not complaining about the workload.

Studying full time at the moment, but would keep going until I finished. I'd use the excess of my funds (after spending the rest to get myself set up for life, namely clearing debts and buying a house and property outright) to invest in different things and fund the R&D side of a few ideas I have for outside the crypto world.

Wouldn't sit idle, that's for certain.

Work you can't be fired from or sweat from.  I think the definition of hard work would be welding a building side, whilst suspended mid-air, or crawling through crawl space and fixing a leaky pipe, whilst waist deep in excrement.

Trading nowadays is all handled by bots and scripts, anyway.

What do you think happens at retirement?  Most people get bored and spend their savings away on cruise trips, eating out and drinking wine.  The reason we see a lot of people continuing to work past age 65 because they're afraid of having nothing else to do in their old age.  This is North American society where people only get to see their Grandchildren (if they have any) once a month or every several months (since they are 2000 miles away by plane), instead of everyday like in the European and Asian extended families.

Yesterday I saw someone crawling around with a cloth wiping a trash can.

And then there are people who risk their lives everyday like the Turkish miners.

Even if not all day jobs are as gross or dangerous, I don't understand why anyone would volunteer to be bossed around and told what to do just to make someone else richer if they knew it wasn't necessary.

Like that guy who won the lottery and was set for life but but went back to flipping burgers after a year because he was bored.

Or the people who work in cubicles.

But if stuff like that gives someone's life purpose and meaning and their lives would be unbearably bored without it then there's nothing wrong with that I guess.

But I think it would be better to find things that you would be interested in. Why not learn code and contribute to open source projects? Pick up a musical instrument? Learn a language? Write a book? Paint something you can be proud of and hang it in a gallery?

I disagree.  I don't think people show up to work just for the "work", they crave the social interaction as well.  This explains all the Lawyers, Doctors and Accountants who work past age 65 and presumably have more than enough money to retire (although some are broke as they live beyond their means).

Quit working and go to Thailand on a drunken whore banging fiesta to keep from getting bored. When that gets old then go to Amsterdam on a drunken whore banging fiesta. Then tour all the Eros centers in Germany. Then go to Aalborg, Denmark and pound a few of their women. Rio would be nice to relax awhile before tearing your way through a bunch of their wool. Then on to Cancun for some brown lips and tequila. What ever you do stay away from the UK because women there are matronly bossy pigs. lol

I have this strong desire to write novels and ideally make a living off it.  I know I can write well, making a living off it is harder though.  So if I did end up becoming super rich with bitcoins, I might just quit my job and work on writing novels all the time.  Yes, retiring would be boring if you're just doing nothing all the time.  Get some hobbies and it wouldn't be.  There's a guy who writes a blog about this exact topic (http://www.mrmoneymustache.com/).  He saved up enough money by the time he became 30 that, since he and his family live frugally, he doesn't need to work any more.  The guy's blog is extremely popular, gets about 5 million hits a month, so clearly this idea resonates with a lot of people, myself included, although it's too late for me to retire by 30.

A job has two other benefits: a social setting and a way to contribute to the community.

People that continue working even though they don't need the money do it for one or both of these reasons.

Give me a small beach house and a chair. I am sure I can find things to do in the extremely unlikely event of boredom.

I would continue working, at least at the beginning. Would probably do 8 hour days with no overtime so I could maintain my benefits. But knowing that I'm filthy rich, that wouldn't last to long! lol  ;D

I like to think that it is my intelligence that keeps me from ever getting bored but it is more likely some sort of undiagnosed mental disorder.  :o
