Introducing Bitcoin to Merchants & Customers

the first order of business would be to make a list of people that would like to spend their bitcoins in Montreal. Please write a post below if you live in the greater Montreal area and would like to spend your bitcoins there. Also include an idea of what type of business we should go after.

I'm thinking a small no-name restaurant that delivers good food would be a good place to start.

We have a hairdresser just of the island of Montréal that accepts bitcoin, but now we want more merchants saying: Tabarnack, bitcoin c'est l'avenir!

The thing with these early adopters is we shouldn't try and convince them to adopt Bitcoin because of what it does but why they should care about Bitcoin in general. The early adopter probably will not see an immediate benefit to offering this payment option, hell it might even be an extra cost they absolutely can't afford right now.. But they might want to adopt it because they believe in the reasons for why one should use Bitcoin and maybe in time, with enough early adopters they'll start seeing some benefits of extra customers ect..

So I guess what I'm trying to get a cross is don't focus on the financial benefit for these early adopter businesses but rather on the value of innovating their business to themselves with a potential of a benefit far off in the future..

i agree with you,

but i think restaurants will see a huge benefit for taking bitcoins...

look : http://en.restoboom.com/intro?redirectUrl=home.action%26ref%3Drestomtl-top&useDefaultCategory=true#

many business are willing to give 50% off simply for buying their product or service online using Groupon.

I'm sure their is some hassle involved with working with Groupon. it might actually be more of a hassle then dealing with pit-pay.

The free publicity aspect can be a selling point.

That thread alone was looked by more than 280 people.

Local media will surely wants to write a story about a restaurant accepting a new digital currency.

We're all about the coin :-) I am definitely interested in seeing Canada take a leadership position vis-a-vis digital currencies in general and Bitcoin in particular. In order for this to happen I think there needs to be some clarity regarding the various legalities. I have started talking to people in government (FINTRAC, OSFI, etc) about this issue and I hope others will do the same. I am starting to think that an organization like openmedia.ca might be a partner to the BTC community... but I digress. I like many others here am fascinated by the idea of Bitcoin as a standalone currency but I also am very firmly convinced that the underlying technology will lead to ancillary uses of the coin (or some variation of the current blockchain) that are extremely compelling. People far smarter than me have expounded on these ideas and I think we can all agree they have quite a bit of merit. I would like see this amazing technology and the associated ecosystem move out of the "shadows" and ease into the mainstream. Is the coin 100% ready for the masses? Probably not by a longshot but I think we are at the stage where we either start thinking of pushing for mainstream acceptance in the legal sense (if not actual adoption as a currency) or accept being relegated to the status of novelty item for the forseeable future. My two cents.

Also I think the idea of a Montreal meetup is really cool ... seems like there are probably at least 5 - 10 of us who are pretty active? I'm down if people want to meet up...

Bump.

Any new bitcoiners in or around Montreal?

If all goes well, we will have many merchants waiting to take our bitcoin in exchange for goods and services, next spring!

In Florida I plan to open a general convenience (feed/dog tags/ convenience items, and plenty more, tobacco, beer, etc) and will accept Bitcoins. If I manage to get the oil contract again I'll also be able to buy gasoline from me in Bitcoins on the spot, in the physical location.

Groupon is a bad deal because they take 1/4 to 1/2 the revenue they bring in.

If you offer a $20 value for $10, you get something like $5-$7.50, and not right away either.  It really only works for very high profit places or restaurants desperate for business.

Taking bitcoin is not about saving 3% for a restaurant, it is about bringing in customers who would not come otherwise.

I've started a google doc.

List of potential Bitcoin Merchants in Montreal (https://docs.google.com/a/isquared.ca/document/d/1kWxLiTZ6qKLvalx9rtBPFkh7zdDXAOq0eOUSh9GwPpc/edit)

I would like to make a list of all the privately owned Brick and mortar businesses in Montreal
I will contact these businesses asking them to come to the presentation about bitcoin next spring. (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=98862.msg1334041#msg1334041)

PM me your g-mail acc. if you want to help build this list.

I've been doing the same in Vancouver.  We have a fairly well-attended monthly meetup group here http://www.meetup.com/bitcoinvan/ and a good number of people offering to exchange bitcoins through localbitcoins.com.

Last week I was in a cafe/restaurant by my house that had a notice up saying they were no longer accepting VISA/Mastercard for purchases under $20 due to a recent increase in the transaction fees.  I pitched bitcoins to the owner and they've agreed to accept them starting tomorrow!  I'm going to set them up with a Point of Sale app that I've been working on that runs nicely on cheap 7" Android tablets: http://vanbtc.ca/sweettooth

I've offered to purchase all the bitcoins they receive at whatever the exchange rate was at the time of sale.  I'm putting together a simple report that logs all the transactions they receive and totals up the equivalent in CAD so they can know how much I owe them: http://vanbtc.ca/sweettooth/report

I'm trying to design this app so that other people can setup customized Point of Sale pages and offer to act as exchanges for their local merchants.  The code is at https://github.com/asoltys/bitcoin_pos and you can see the configuration page at http://vanbtc.ca/

I'm still working out some kinks and want to add some sort of authentication mechanism in to prevent people from logging fake transactions or exchange rates but I'll have it ready soon and will announce it officially in the coming weeks.

Thanks for the offer.  I might take you up on it later but right now I'm saving up to purchase more Android Tablets (e.g. http://www.gadgetsdealer.com/product126439.html) to take around to more stores.  I want the barrier of entry to be zero for the merchants so I'm going to loan the tablets out for free for the time being and probably do some sort of rent-to-own arrangement later on.

You should check with the bitcoin embassy  (http://bitcoinembassy.ca/). They are the one behind this event.

I'm near Toronto, but travel to Montreal often for work.

I would love to see it accepted at a great restaurant like 'Joe Beef' or 'Liverpool House' downtown.
I love those two restaurants, awesome food, great atmosphere...
