On June 4th around 5 am est my Coinbase account was compromised. I believe I am victim to coinbases enumeration/user leaks. I had 1.79 BTC taken from my account. Also there was 1.55 BTC purchased from my instant purchase. Both of them sent to one address. I had used all the precautions given to me by Coinbase. This money wasn't to be stored but to be used as an investment for my first gridseed miners. The funds were not sitting long. As I felt overnight was probably ok. As I've done before. No it wasn't. I had 2 factor authentication enabled and none of my passwords match. My iMac is worm, and malware free and has strong security. Everything else was in my head. Passwords, secret questions all in my cranium. They were able to crack my log in credentials in order to sign in to coinbase. They then added a VoIP phone number and replaced my cell phone number to verify a 2nd factor token for log in. Then they sent the money to their address along with the instant purchase. Luckily I was able to witness all of this with my working iphone Coinbase app. Which showed me everything. I have the address. Coinbase refused to let me see my account and deleted it "supposedly". They had promised to not charge me for the fraudulent instant purchase. This was not the case. They did charge me and it posted to my bank. It's still there and my checking is overdrafted and littered with fees. My bank is in the process of reversing it. Coinbase refused to take responsibility and account for everything they had done to me. They responded very little and gave me little to no information about what was happening with my issue. They refused to refund my original funds and asked me if I wanted to open a new account and purchase Bitcoin with them again. This is their answer to a problem this severe. "Do you want to purchase more from us after we screwed you?" One of the most unethical business's I've ever encountered. I have the address of the perpetrator and have been following it closely for 4 days. The 1.55 got moved into a giant wallet. My funds still remain??? The giant wallet had 195 BTC in it and it's successors and clusters had even bigger amounts. 500 BTC here, 700 BTC there, big numbers with big money. Most of them emptied into one address and used in coinjoin. After all of this I've been pretty down on my self. For a few days I actually felt like giving up. But friends and family wouldn't let me do that. So yesterday I reached out to Roger Ver. He responded to me and asked me a few questions. He put the faith back into me. He let me know that I have to address the public with this information. People need to know about this. So I'm running with the first thing he told me to do. I'm telling all of you. This is very hard for me to do. As a Bitcoin advocate I had recommended Coinbase to a bunch of you. I regret this. Heed my warning. Coinbase is not secure. If you don't own the private keys to you're Bitcoin you don't own Bitcoin. I knew that and took a 24 hour chance. That was a mistake. Move your funds to a secure location were you are the bank. Trusting others is an irresponsible move and I accept that on my own behalf. Thank you for listening to my story. ****** NOTE this is not a reflection on the #bitcoin protocol itself. This is a reflection on the fact that these businesses and exchanges need to be held accountable. Until then people like myself need to take more precautions and hold the Bitcoins ourselves. No system is secure other than your own. Title: Re: My Coinbase account was compromised. Post by: RainMan28 on June 13, 2014, 02:53:55 PM How were they able to login initially if you had 2FA enabled? Had you turned on the option on any of your devices for it to not ask for a 2FA code for 30 days?

Post by: acs267 on June 13, 2014, 07:33:48 PM I wouldn't trust Coinbase over Blockchain a lot, only to possibly exchange coins via the market (Which I never do). I suggest holding or hodling at Blockchain, and only switching over to Coinbase if you still want to use it temporarily.
Try and contact staff members there, by the way, too. |
