Title: Idea: Random user avatars by default
Post by: rme on June 19, 2014, 08:11:33 PM
If the user does not upload any avatar the default one should be a random one (a pattern) generated using his user id as seed so every user gets a unique default avatar (until they upload one).

Also newbies should not be allowed to upload a custom avatar.

Why? What's the purpose of this? If a user doesn't or choses not to upload an avatar I don't think we should be forcing them to have one.

It's easier to identify them in a sigle thread. At least for me, seeing colored patterns is faster than reading the usernames.

not forced, should be able to opt out from it,

but at least it will allow many of us to have some kind of avatar, i hate being avatarless.

Could be ok if it's simple like Github's ones. Not sure how to make this feature elegant otherwise.

Personally, I think this looks better than identicons.

It would be some random (bright) color, with the first letter of the username.

It looks good.
Will they enable the option for uploading a custom profile pic in new forum?

Kindly,

Yep, people should be allowed to upload their own profile. These would just be default.

Uploading photo was disabled after the forum got hacked. So did devs got any anti-cheat to prevent further attacks? Any details on that?
Kindly,

It doesn't need to be an image, it could just be a coloured geometric shape. It is so difficult to find my own posts in a thread at the moment.

I like this idea everyone complains about not having avatars. But, the user should be able opt for no avatar too.
