Title: one antminer S1 + two bfl power supplies (fun)
Post by: Grecoin on July 01, 2014, 08:37:33 AM
what is left from the lot is an unused antminer s1 and two bfl single 60 power supplies.. and it would be nice to avoid buying another psu..

would it be possible for this config to ever work (1 bfl psu in each hashing board)?

It should work. BFL Singles draw around 250W, and an over clocked S1 only needs 200W per blade. Both measured at the wall.

Note: the BFL Single PSUs are poorly made and inefficient.  I know this because I had three of them. I replaced them with AX1200i platinum PSUs and got lower W at the wall. Also people have reported the BFL Single PSUs failing. If I was you, I'd use a proper ATX PSU for peace of mind.

I have (had) 2 BFL SC power supplies. one died and the other never gave its rated voltage (sagged under load).

the only thing they are good for is the cables. cut em of and use them in custom cable adapters.

Now why did I never think about that, I just threw mine away as fast as I could :(

Do you want an S1 or the charred remains of what once was an S1?

As others are saying, do your self a favor and prevent a fire by not using the BFL PSU.

+1

If you use those BFL supplies (the ones that look like huge laptop bricks with a little fan) you will probably end up with something broken or worse.

If you got a name brand power supply from BFL with a professionally made on jumper like I did you should be ok.

Best to recycle those and get something like an HP/Compaq server power supply with a Gigampz adapter board.
I'm using a single one to power my S1.
Simple, reasonably efficient, and runs my S1 overlocked at 393.75 with no problems.

I have two supplies and boards.  One I plan to use on the S1 full time, the other is for bench testing car amps, stereos, running fuel pumps, etc.
One supply draws about 453 Watts, one draws 460 Watts or more.
Of course, the one that draws more power has quieter fans.
Going to have to take both apart and swap the fans.

I've hacked apart 2 BFL single power supplies - mainly because they both blew up...

If you cut the PCI-e cord between the round part and where it connects to the brick unit - you will find 4 wires.  Both of mine were different.  One was nice and easy - 2 reds and 2 blacks.  The other - it was 4 different colored wires.  You could then connect these wires directly to the Ant S1 using the screw terminal connections.  To be safer - connect one BFL brick to each side of the S1.  In theory you have enough power - each side of the s1 takes about 200 watts.

Since my BFL supplies blew up - I used just the PCI-e end of the cables to wire them up with wirenuts to some 14awg wire and sent that to a dell 750 server powersupply

After all it works. Even not to be expected, it is quite stable over the last days

thanks for the replies guys
