Title: Bitcoin: what is it good for?
Post by: niko on March 08, 2012, 03:17:35 AM
This is a follow up to an old poll.  The community is growing bigger, and Bitcoin seems to be here to stay. It'd be interesting to know how people actually use Bitcoin at this point.

I really hope to do this one soon:

I regularly buy stuff with Bitcoin.

I'm working on getting businesses in Chicago & Cleveland to accept bitcoin.  Once that happens, I hope to become a regular user.

I would like to do mining to earn bitcoins and use them as gold, but now I'm selling services for bitcoins.

this is exactly what merchants should do at these low prices.  this is why an economy can still revolve around a currency that acts like a store of value too.

once earned, save them!

I think that there is an option missing. "I sometimes buy stuff with Bitcoin". I have bought bitcoins and I'd like to use them to buy stuff but I couldn't possibly say that I do that "regularly", simply because it's not that widely accepted.

Right, and that's the point. I am not interested in how people would like to use Bitcoin or how they imagine the future, but if and how they actually use it on regular basis.

I use Bitcoin regularly for international money transfers. Even with all the fiat banking on both ends of the scheme, this is still cheaper and faster than traditional banking with exchange rates, international wires or mailing of a certified check...

Bitcoin actually works, and it's better, even at this early stage!

I think BTC will truly be successful when your question can be answered with a single mainstream product/service. I've seen a lot of innovation around here. One tentpole application will create a domino effect. Once people start using them for a specific purpose, they will begin to explore other ways to put the currency to use.

Forgot to include online games, and that may very well be the first major breakthrough!

"No, I don't really use Bitcoin and I don't mine."

Probably not setting the best example...

Hah good idea, if there's a market for EVE plex in BTC I'd probably log into my trade character more often for easy ISK.

Alright, thank you all for casting your votes. At this moment 132 people have voted, with a total 353 votes, or 2.7 votes per voter. Assuming most of us have been honest, the two prevailing modes of use of Bitcoin nowadays are long-term investment and time wasting. Not bad for starters, but obviously we've got a long way to go. Glad to see a significant percentage of people claiming to be using coins to buy/sell stuff regularly, although frankly I believe it must be SR stuff. Again, not bad for starters.

Bitcoin is here, and it works. It survived quite successfully series of malicious attacks and scams, and bursting of a speculation bubble. Like it or not, the major hurdle - taxation and regulation - is ahead of us, and will inevitably start unfolding through legal precedents in courts, and decisions of revenue agencies. I am convinced that wide adoption and investment depend on how this plays out.  This year will be critical, and what we'll need more than anything are good attorneys, sober thinking, and well-thought PR.
