Title: Problems With Bitcoin Part 1: Won't scale for Class 2 civilizations
Post by: hashman on March 12, 2012, 07:35:56 AM

The network implementation as is, in particular the delay between blocks, means that the network cannot work on a large scale system.  The network will lose coherency and forks will develop as nodes become separated by distances approaching 10 light minutes.  For reference, sometimes Mars is further away from the Earth than that.  A series of nested chains with increasing delta T targets and difficulties will be required to have a coherent network for interplanetary or interstellar communities.  Lets think ahead folks ;)

The simplest and most non-disruptive way to handle this is to have two chains: bitcoinEarth and bitcoinMars. Transactions can be sent between the two but they will have serious delays--this can be handled by contracts though, I believe, and should not generally be disruptive as until we're at class 3 post-warp society, it will take longer for you to get to mars than your bitcoins. When class 3 happens, surely a warp vehicle will be stationed in space purely for the facilitation of warp-speed bitcoin transfer.

See, this is what the op was concerned about, we don't really think far ahead! The warp vehicle will surely become outdated!
