Earth's Magnetic Field Is Weakening 10 Times Faster Now

Earth's magnetic field, which protects the planet from huge blasts of deadly solar radiation, has been weakening over the past six months, according to data collected by a European Space Agency (ESA) satellite array called Swarm.

The biggest weak spots in the magnetic field — which extends 370,000 miles (600,000 kilometers) above the planet's surface — have sprung up over the Western Hemisphere, while the field has strengthened over areas like the southern Indian Ocean, according to the magnetometers onboard the Swarm satellites — three separate satellites floating in tandem.

The scientists who conducted the study are still unsure why the magnetic field is weakening, but one likely reason is that Earth's magnetic poles are getting ready to flip, said Rune Floberghagen, the ESA's Swarm mission manager. In fact, the data suggest magnetic north is moving toward Siberia.

"Such a flip is not instantaneous, but would take many hundred if not a few thousand years," Floberghagen told Live Science. "They have happened many times in the past."

Great. A hair off either way and we all fly off into space.

Been saying this for awhile now, we NEED to develop space flight as a species, it's necessary for our survival.

What we need is politicians who will prioritize space programs over nonsense wars. Space programs need big budgets.

It's true, if we put the budget we'd have in the military for space flight instead we'd be incredibly advanced >_< but all we have are a few space probes and satellites that look like they're made out of tinfoil.

The magnetic field has been flip flopping, moving about, varying in strength since the formation of this world.  It's not really anything to worry about.  Magnetic north and south poles travel a bit every year... everyone should know that.  Ten times faster than nearly nothing is... lemmee think, still nearly nothing.

Wait.  Pelosi says we should never waste a crisis.... even if we have to invent one.

What we need is politicians who dont have the power to control everything.  For all we know the elites already have space transportation ready.

I'm sure the global climate changers will latch onto this and blame mankind so they can dig into our pockets for even more money. Just give them time, they're working on a new hockey stick chart that will scare the life out of lefties until they demand we fix the field and restore it to perfect balance and harmony.

We all wait! "IF" Income Redistribution is EVER to become acceptable, then it is for the best the Earth is snuffed out like a dead candle, and cast lifeless into deep space!

It would be pointless to save any such planet.

Back in the 70s when I was young, there was an acquaintance of mine who was a dental student who had a friend, who was an astrophysicist from Pepperdine.  He had a theory of a polar axis shift and that it occurs quite rapidly.   He said that is what explained the mammoth found in the artic with still undigested food in it's stomach, the Beresovka Mammoth.  Anyway, he said back then that it would occur soon, and would be cataclysmic.  Of course, "soon" is a relative term, so who knows what was meant, years, decades, centuries, within the next millennium.  Oh well, if it happens that way, just hold on and enjoy the ride....while you can!

We are about due for a pole reversal.  Australia has had the south to itself for long enough.

Did you see the movie "The Day After Tomorrow"? Dennis Quaid was in it. It was quite interesting and along the same lines as your friend's theory.

The only thing a magnetic pole reversal will do is change the directions on a compass.

Unless the Earth's axis tilt changes, or the Earth's orbit around the Sun changes, nothing significant will happen to the climate.
IT won't really change Earth's atmosphere, which is as important as Earth's magnetic field in relation to solar flares.

That's kind of neat then although I guess since a pole reversal takes a long time I wouldn't live to see the compass in reverse.

Just about every issue on a global scale is a scam these days.

In order for this to happen all Rothschilds and their "royal" blood must be hung.  Our financial system a complete re-do and people like Tesla in power.

Anyone watch the movie 2012 is based on this theory. But the polar shifts happen only in one day. It would be catastrophic if this happen even in one month. There would be lots of earth quakes and mega tsunamis. Mankind could be extinct.

The article is about the earths magnetic field, not gravity.






What makes you think this?

It's imposible that the Earth's magnetic field could trigger such catastrophic events: it's just too weak to affect huge land or water masses. Our planet is not magnetar.

We can have both we will call it the Gundam Universal Century Universe.
Good old war and gundams but yah I would love to see space travel more affordable efficient and faster.
Space X etc.


Yah not enough magnetic effect to really impact earths magnetic field enough to cause catastrophes.
Mining or fracking would have more significant effects than a pole change.

That said I do have a curiosity would it impact any electronics in the very long run if the things were still fully operational.

I don't understand the relationship between weakening and inversion...

Inversion means that magnetical poles move slowly and cross the equator.

Weakening means that magnetic field is fading away.

The first has no catastrophic consequences, the second means deadly solar wind hitting earth.

Yeah, come on.

The north has been moving Norther and Norther (closer to the pole from somewhere in Canada).

The weakening of the magnetic field is worrying, it would probably mean that we need to build our satellites way more resiliently armored against radiation (so our astronauts don't get cooked with it).

But the field is always in flux, we need to find a way to get historical data to examine this further.

Well,They said that the poles will flip in a few hundred years and It has happened before too so it's not dangerous.As far as Magnetic field is concerned,Don't we hear it everyday that it is weakening?  ???

I'm all for Space programmes over illegal wars that take the lives of many innocent people in the name of WMD and "liberation".

Man, to have something as breathtaking as the moon landing within the next decade would be special. 

Unfortunately science has become big business. If you can tell a scary story the data doesn't need to back it up. The lipid hypothesis and climate change boogie men have proven that. 

Imagine if some tragedy like a major solar flare for example, would happen in our life time. Then all our bitcoins and everything else will be trivial. :-)
