Title: how to move cold storage from one computer to another? Post by: mkc on July 17, 2014, 04:29:45 AM I have cold storage setup in a very old computer, now that I want to move it to a little bit better one, with whole hard disk encrypted by PGP. Before I start, I want to hear from gurus here. Is this simple process, just install electrum in the new computer, enter the seed, and done? Then I can wipe the disk of old computer and throw it away?

I would also write down a few addresses on a piece of paper. When you restore from seed on the new system just compare the addresses with the ones on the paper. If they are the same you know you have the same wallet.
Also make sure it does not say 'watch only' in the title bar of the electrum window in the new computer. You want to restore a seeded wallet not a watch only one. BTW hard drive encryption on linux at least is not going to use pgp. I think symmetric alogs are used instead. Title: Re: how to move cold storate from one computer to another? You can also get the actual wallet.dat file from your %Appdata%/Electrum/wallets folder. Note: I am assuming that your current Bitcoin client is also Electrum. When I say PGP, I mean whole disk encryption. I think they are the first one to make whole disk encrption popular. |
