Title: S1 or S3 miner, Dusty location?
Post by: spazzdla on July 19, 2014, 06:21:58 PM
1) Buy pantyhose & lint roller from dollar store for $2
2) Cut off toes of pantyhose
3) Put toe piece over intake fan

You now have dust protection and tool to clean.

Sounds like you are doing it, can you post a picture so it is clearer?

Pantyhose, S3?  Sheesh, this really is turning into miningpron.  You need to post pics in the Pics of your miner thread.

If you need a finer filter on a fan that has a higher flow rate, used fabric softener sheets work well.

Yeah, we need some pictures of this.  ;D

Hmmm, I remember seeing rows and rows panty hoses at the dollar store....

nice idea but it requires you to regularly check the miner to ensure the dust isn't impairing airflow

it won't take long before you cook a miner if you neglect a clogged "filter"

Seems like it will restrict airflow and cause overheating issues.

:/

I ran my s1's for about 6 months in a dusty environment but didn't see a performance problem. Just dust off your miners twice a year. The pantyhose will restrict too much airflow, I'd be careful with that.

I haven't got s1 or s3 but using pantyhose like many of you spotted already might cause overheating.

There was a thread somewhere where someone put instructions on how to apply paper food filter into s2 and perhaps that was good solution but you must check your rig temperature while experimenting with those kind of solutions.

Regards.

I took the fan off of all 4 of mine after 2 months... massive dust blocks some started to burn a bit.  Odds are they would be on fire right now if I didn't clean them...

The finer the filtering material the more often you will have to clean the filter but the less often you will have to open the miners and clear the heatsink.  It's your choice - clean the external filter or the internal heatsink.
