Title: Announcing a new bitcoin store: bitmunchies.com
Post by: bearbones on May 02, 2011, 08:05:58 PM
Bitmunchies.com (http://Bitmunchies.com) is intended to provide access to goods unavailable elsewhere in the bitcoin economy.  I'm focusing on food from the start, but I intend to expand the product selection according to interest.  A partial list of our current selection is:

Mac & Cheese
Ramen
Chicken Noodle Soup
Tea
Red Bull
Slim Jims

I am currently looking for better supplier and new products, so please send me product requests.  I will work hard to get them into the store!  Any other comments are likewise welcome.

Please, enjoy, and lets keep building this community up!

Sincerely,
Ira Miller

Software:
Bitmunchies is built on top of osCommerce.  Bear Bones limited (www.bearbones.us (http://www.bearbones.us)) developed an osCommerce bitcoin payment module for this project.  It needs to be cleaned up a bit first, but I will be releasing it to the osCommerce community in the coming weeks.  If anyone is interested in helping out, shoot me a PM.

Exchange Rate
Since the exchange rate is moving so quickly, I chose to stick with a fixed exchange rate.  It will be updated at my discretion to reflect price changes.  I realize that the target is moving very quickly, but this beats extremely dynamic product prices.

Checkout process
This should be pretty intuitive.  There is only one payment option: Bitcoin.  Upon submitting your order, you will be given a unique bitcoin address.  After the funds are transferred and confirmed four(4) times, your order will be mailed.

Shipping
All orders are shipped USPS or UPS.  Orders confirmed before 9am will be shipped the same business day.  All others will ship the next business day.  Expect shipping prices to go down significantly as volume goes up.  Right now I'm shipping most of these items myself, and it is a time consuming process.

FINALLY.

Do you ship worldwide?

Any jobs available? I can help with excel-type stuff, financial stuff (eg. getting a loan for you, if you need one), or in general just general freelance stuff... I even know a tiny bit of Java.

I will ship items worldwide at cost + $5 handling fee.  Right now, though, I have some work to do on the shipping module, so international orders will have to be emailed to me.  If you send me (here, on the site or on #bitcoin-otc) a list of bitmunchies products, I'll get back to you with shipping costs.

I have no jobs available at the moment, but hopefully things will expand quickly. ;)

You've got stuff I want (mac and cheese and ramen) - two suggestions.

1. Chicken maruchan ramen, beef is meh.

2. Use the moving 7 or 30 day average from bitcoincharts.com - that provides a stable, yet accurate, price.

Yes, $5 in bitcoins.  :)

It is hard to set prices in bitcoins, when day over day volatility is +-20% against USD...  Lets just say 2BTC for right now.

EDIT
I like the 7-day moving average idea... Will look into implementing it.

I really shouldn't ship perishables... but why not?

carrots -> http://bitmunchies.com/product_info.php?products_id=184 (http://bitmunchies.com/product_info.php?products_id=184)

If you tried to live entirely from bitmunchies, you just might get scurvy :P. Perhaps adding multivitamins to your inventory would be in order?

Man, those better be some good carrots...

That's a pretty strong exchange rate, Carrot is clearly a superior currency!  ;)

This is an awesome idea, but as far as the exchange rate goes, why not peg the prices to the 24 hour or seven day moving average once each day?

In addition to carrots, you should offer pizza for 10,000 BTC.

I am actually working on getting products from a local bakery.  I'll see if he can make pizza.  :)

A script is also under development to automatically set the prices to the 7 day average at MTGOX.  Honestly, I'm working on quite a few things.  This is fun, and I want to provide a real service.

The exchange rate was just lowered a bit, so that it is once again in line with the 7 day.

Just offer frozen pizza, shipped in a cooler.

Won't be cheap, though.

proxy buying delivery pizza for bitcoin in major cities could be a good idea. hmm I like this idea.

Proxy buying delivery pizza would be a nerve racking job.  Unless you can hire someone cheap with great English to sit by the phone, you're gonna have a fun time of it.  :-/

I don't know about all that.  What about the online system for PapaJohn's pizzia?  I'm sure that their online ordering system uses some kind of API that could be connected to, if they will let you, which is a big if.

Here in Pittsburgh, the local (and legendary) pizza place Mineo's overnights pizzas.  They cook them half-way.  Then freeze them.  Then ship them overnight without any dry ice or anything.  Then people either let the pizza thaw and cook immediately, or throw it in the freezer for later.

I did send one of these to a friend, and he said it tasted exactly like the real thing.  There wasn't a noticeable quality degradation with the freezing process.

But they don't accept bitcoins... yet.

I have ordered a few Chicago style pizzas in that manner before.  Nothing like it!

Hey the site seems to be coming along nicely, I bet that is almost a full time job now. I really hope you can get a better supplier, Your prices seem a little high,But I know thats the cost of the small quantity sales. Anyway, were you located, there should be some grocery store suppliers. For my grocery store I used krasdale, they have a crap load of products at pretty good prices.

He said it was prohibitively expensive. Shipping with dry ice is certainly not cheap!

It is not prohibitively expensive, just very expensive.  :/  Pizza is on the site because everyone keeps requesting it.  I costed it out, and that is what it would take.  I think that you'll find the rest of our products are chosen for easy shipping.  As such, they're reasonably priced.

I'd also like to mention that we increased our selection by 50% today, including a new Hygiene category.

Because of the volatile (read: glorious) exchange rate movement over the last few days, I've pegged the price significantly above the 7-day average.  I hope that helps!

Just a FYI- got my order today, well packed (no broken noodles!) and just what I ordered. :)

Man, this was some expensive ramen! (given new exchange rates, at the time it was reasonable :) )

Title: Re: Announcing a new bitcoin store: bitmunchies.com
Post by: bearbones on May 11, 2011, 04:45:00 AM
You know, I was concerned that the exchange rate was so high because there were so many long term long position holders.  It seems possible that the price is supported by a good amount of commerce.  In truth, though, we can't really say it won't take a dive down and make your ramen seem cheap, by comparison.

If we want prices to go up, we must continue to build this market and spend, until everyone wants a bitcoin or 10000.  :)

Its a bit weird how when you click Food-> (129) it will only show 30 results: I'm guessing it doesn't show products on a subcategory?

btw how is the shipping to Europe? Do you have any idea how much longer and expensive it is?

Title: Re: Announcing a new bitcoin store: bitmunchies.com
Post by: bearbones on May 17, 2011, 03:47:28 PM
A medium sized USPS priority mail box ships to Western Europe for 5.75 BTC.  The dimensions are 11"x8-1/2"x5-1/2".  For smaller packages, it is cheaper.  Prices balloon quickly as you go up in mass or volume, though.

The reason it messes up the count is because it double counts items which are linked to multiple categories.  I know it is annoying, but it is just one of a thousand little osCommerce issues I'm working on.

Someone needs to do this in a real time local level.  Like a bitcoin grubhub.  You go online... you send the bitcins, someone delivers your food.

I am in NYC if someone wants to get this going.
