Title: Building rig 4x5970 need help
Post by: MadGod on May 04, 2011, 10:27:39 AM
Hya all good folks.

I started mining about a week ago and i like it. My 6950 has served me well since i bought it (7 days ago) but has started to make some funny sounds :D hehe but no worries, just send it back to trader and get new one when it fails.

Now to the question, im going to upgrade my current rig to support 4x5970 GPU:s and need help to chose parts.
Im a student so my economy is a limit but i dont pay for the electricity.

My current rig is 600w PSU
Core 2 duo q9550 (socket 775)
DDR2 memory
Antec 300

Now what i need is a bigger case, was thinking of Obsidian 800D. I know its expensive but i can use it for as long as ATX standard exist, i LOVE this BIG case. But please come with other suggestions and motivate why, like better cooling, quieter.

Second thing is the mainboard, plz come w suggestions

And im guessing i need 1500w PSU but with a bigger case i can have 2 PSU

And then the most important thing, the 4x5970. What manufacteror do you guys recommend and why? Most of all, is it eaven possible to run them on my 775 socket?

Another question concerning software, what OS is best to use for mining? Win 7 32-bit?

And last question, why do i have holes on my socks :D

Thx in advance for all your help and sorry for my bad english :)

Hello,
From what I can tell it is hard to get 5970's right now. Plus the price/performance ratio is very bad. right now the best p/p ratio is with the hd5850. But You would need some new equipment.
Bellow you will find some suggestions that should work!

Newegg
ASUS P8P67 WS REVOLUTION - 254
This has 4 usable pcie x16 slots!

Intel Core-I5 2300 - 184
This is the minimum you should go, a 2500k might be better

G.SKILL NS 2GB  = 20
2gb ram, lifetime warranty

LIAN LI Lancool PC-K57 - 70
remove the hdd cage, mount hdd in a 5.25 bay or use a flashdrive.
this will fit 4x 400mm cards! it is very HUGE!

SILVERSTONE ST1500 1500W - 380
You need all this power! for quad dual gpu cards!
CORSAIR TX Series CMPSU-950TX - 170
if you chose quad 5850

Video card options...
4x 5970 (680 each on tiger, order 1 at a time)
4x 6996 (739 each on newegg)
4x 5850(140 each, can get a smaller psu also)
5970(price per core, 21 cents)
6990(price per core, 24 cents)
5850(price per core, 10 cents)

approximate hashes oc
4x 5970(oc to 850 if you can) = 740 * 4 = 2,960 mhps
4x 6990(oc to 900 if you can) = 770 * 4 = 3,080 mhps
4x 5850(oc to 925 if you can) = 300 * 4 = 1,200 mhps

approximate hashes stock
4x 5970= 530 * 4 = 2,120 mhps
4x 6990 = 708* 4 = 2,832 mhps
4x 5850= 240* 4 = 960 mhps

price per mhps with overclocks if attainable
5970:total price 3630, price per mhps, 91 cents
6990: total price 3870, price per mhps, 1.26
5850: total price 1260, price per mhps, 1.05

price per mhps Stock clocks
5970:total price 3630, price per mhps, 1.71cents
6990: total price 3870, price per mhps, 1.37
5850: total price 1260, price per mhps, 1.31

as you can see, the 6990 would be better than a 5970 at stock. If you can get your 5870's stable at high oc then they become better. Depends on how much of a gamble you want to take. the 5850 system does a bit better than the 6990 in price/performance but remember that having one system pulling about 1300-1500w is better than 4 pulling 1000-1200w. You may need a stronger psu thn i posted for the 5850s.
unfortunately, if you go with the i5-2300 you can never call this a super duper gaming rig when you try to sell it. with a 2500k for just 40 more and adding more memory down the road you have yourself something easier to sell when you are done with them, which might be as soon as the 7000 series releases a dual gpu card, which is the best time to do so.
Good luck hope it clears up some questions.

Obligatory begging:

Dude tell me why 5970 is not the best bang for buck since I can get it for 350$ only ? One 6990 costs you about 700$ = 2x 5970 = at least 1.5x 6990 hashing power.

If you can get a 5970 for $350 then by all means do it now before the seller realizes their mistake!
