Title: Should Namecoin Have its Own Forum Section?
Post by: kiba on May 04, 2011, 08:20:38 PM
I think it's inevitable that the namecoin discussion will become an entire category in itself.

Yes... I was just going to suggest the same thing. I think it should have it's own forum re:domain to be honest.

It's too bad namecoin.org was registered 5 years ago and is now down...

No kidding. Pretty much everything should have it's own forum, but not here.

Why not?

There aren't enough posts about it yet. I expect Namecoin to fail, anyway, since its economic model is broken.

Why is it broken? The cost of registrating domains will fall 50% over whatever period I forgot.

Either way.. I still suggest we move all namecoin related posts to their own sub forum. If it dies, simply kill the sub forum. What have we got to lose? Besides cleaning up the BTC forums a bit?

There's a limited number of domains, which is unsustainable. No formula will be able to predict demand.

In theory, there are a limited number of .com domains as well.

There is a generic hard limit of 63 characters for a domain name.

Considering the nature of domain names however (to make ip addresses easier to understand), there is a generic soft limit of ~15 characters in length. Otherwise it would be easier to remember the IPv4 address at this point.

So in theory there are only 36^15 total possible useful .com domain names, or = 2.2107392 e^23 according to google... but there is a limit.

As a fellow bitcoiner, I would not go around pointing out a brand new project's flaws and using that as a reason to avoid it.

If everybody did that, where would bitcoins be today?

I beg your pardon?

Bitcoin doesn't have a flawed economic model...

The limited rate of domain creation is a more important issue than the total number of useful domains. When demand outpaces supply, prices will quickly become uncompetitive. The price of registrations should reflect the resources that are actually being used by the network (disk space, etc.), as well as the demand for particular names. This is properly done through the free market. Prices should not be fixed according to some formula, which is what Namecoin does.

Domains are very unlike money. A fixed supply is not desirable.

As far as I know, namecoins get destroyed when you register, but the destroyed amount of namecoin rapidly drop off to insignificant.

So then the cost will get too cheap and the network will still be unsustainable... Prices cannot be determined with a formula!

It's called transaction fee.

I own namecoin.eu, namecoin.info and namecoin.it.
If someone wants to use one of those for the namecoin website I'll donate the domain, no problem!

I do believe you're missing what theymos is saying.

As I understand it (I don't read up on Namecoin, I'm lazy like that), supply of namecoins will approach infinity and thus registering them will become negligibly expensive, which is bad for competition.

There will be 21M namecoins, minus the initial network fees.  The long term cost of maintaining a domain will be determined by transaction fees charged by miners.  They might even practice price discrimination based on the name.  sex.bit might need to do their own mining.

I have no opinion about the separate forum/section question.

I think the bitcoin forum is a good way to bootstrap this project.
But, it can't eternally rely on bitcoin, even with a separated section... and that's why i've started the dot-bit wiki (http://dot-bit.org/Main_Page). I may add a forum too soon.

I've not taken "namecoin" as project name because there was no domain free, and because of the dot-p2p project.
psy owns some namecoin domains, so, a change of name is still possible.

This isn't everything-with-a-block-chain.org. If you think there is lost of interest in discussing a DNS system then make a site for it. That said I prefer it all to be in one spot if it is going to be here.

And the namecoin wiki is here : http://dot-bit.org/

I want this project to be successfull, and there is still a lot of work for that.

hint : registering to the dot-bit forum (http://dot-bit.org/forum/) could help :D

I think namecoin should have it's own forum. But the reality is people create multiple threads about it here, so I think it would be better to keep them in one place.

I imagine there are a lot of people like me, who aren't interested in the namecoin project. I think it transcends bitcoin, and should run off of it's own domains, etc.

If there are no objections, we will use khal's site and cross-post to forums.bitcoin.org occasionally.  We will cross-post releases and other important announcements.

Namecoin project is based on bitcoin technology. There is some NMC - BTC  deals going on right now,
better to post at list link on dot net forum to avoid flood.
