I recently introduced someone to Bitcoin and they asked about buying it anonymously. I didn't really have an answer as I can't think of a way to do that effectively. Does anyone know the best (and most reliable) way to buy Bitcoin anonymously?

Try #bitcoin-otc on Freenode, using a moneypak. You can connect to Freenode using Tor with SASL, or through a VPN.

You don't mention where you are located.

One method is to send cash in the mail.  http://www.get-bitcoin.com is one merchant that offers that type of exchange.  Sending cash in the mail internationally though often has a lesser chance of making it to its intended destination.

There is also the ability to walk into a bank and deposit cash using BitInstant.  In most instances, no identity is required.  This less anonymous than the other options but probably is adequate.

Probably obvious, but selling stuff (including fiat money) through auction sites and mining are the two methods I get my anonymous coins. They go into a different wallet. ;)

If you are not looking for a huge amount, trading them with something tangible or a service, or cash by mail is easily doable.
