Title: Are You Spending Bitcoin?
Post by: jeromanomic on August 10, 2014, 11:29:17 AM
I just read this:
http://www.finance-guy.net/finblog/how-will-you-spend-your-bitcoin/10/8/2014

It raises an interesting point that if we spend Bitcoin to buy stuff, the companies will most likely sell the BTC pretty quickly.

What do you think?

Will shopping with Bitcoin be good or bad for the price of BTC?

Yes.

Some people spend, some hodl. What does it matter if they sell it? The money goes back into the system and round and round.

I always pay (now) with fiat currency ... so no, i transform in BTC to hold ... but not use (perhaps when my car will fail, i search a car bitcoin seller  ;D they always accept many particulate money when they WANT sell without the old car)

How could it possibly be bad. Merchants are what drives adoption. We need people constantly spending their coins to higher the demmand and thus with a limited supply the price will rise.

Yes absolutely
I hold 50%, spend the rest and trade stuff to replenish

People must use BTC as a transaction (spend) or the entire system freezes up with everyone holding. This would leave bugger all currency floating around, pushing the coins through the roof in price until nobody will swap them for goods because transactions are limited.

Moral of the situation, in order for the BTC economy to grow then a reasonable percentage of the BTC economy must be transacted.

When ever I spend I buy the exact amount back.

Also It does not matter if they sell right away, someone will always buy it. Eventually when the price is more stable these companies will start to figure that they may as well hold some eventually they may end up holding all, Overstock already holds 10% possibly even more now.

And If MANY shops start to accept it. Food, Electronics, Auto industry, Bills (Water, Gas, electricity), Fuel , telephone etc...

Eventually they will realise well the price is stable, Millions of merchants are now accepting it & price is slowly on the creep up... this currency is Finite and deflationary.. it will make sense to start keeping 20/30/40/50% or maybe even more... At the end of the day since so many merchants are accepting we can even use it like normal dollars and pay our bills with it or buy stock with it ETC

I think we should stop worrying about what companies do with the BTC after we purchase in the long term this is helping this industry and Bitcoin, you can believe that!

I'm forever doing little trades with Bitcoin because I know without trading Bitcoin this revolutionary idea will eventually die people need to trade to make it worth as much as it is.

How does it not have any use to you? are you using Bitcoin just to profit in fiat? if so you are doing it wrong and will probably lose out in the long run even if you do profit for a short while.

Can you explain your opinion on why they would lose out in the long run ?

I bought something with BTC the other day.. Hadn't spent any in a while. Was a tiny amount, like 0.03 but easier than using paypal so I was happy to use it.. this time :)

Yes I spending Bitcoin and don't see what is the problem with this.
If nobody spend Bitcoin, for buying digital services and products, merchants will not be interesting to accept bitcopin as additional currency.
Trade can just help global popularity of Bitcoin, so it's not wrong to spend it :)

Yes of course I spend my Bitcoin. I like the idea of this wonderful currency a lot and I want to spread it even further! I think it is very important to do this! It is true that most companies may sell the BTC directly via BitPay or some other payment processor, yet, there are most likely big whales who buy those BTC instantly, because they're supposed to have contracts with those payment processors, as far as I know. So there's not much pressure on the markets (maybe only a slightly more limited demand)

Well, why would it be necessarily bad? I can only think of maybe one reason: If you only hold your coins and never spend them, it doesn't even matter how high the BTC price gets, you'll never realize your gains and never profit from the increased price. It doesn't even matter whether you buy something with your coins or just plain and simple sell them, but you need to use them in order to profit from the increased value!

No use to you? It seems you don't even believe in it and your only here to try to get rich and then never looking back if you do manage to.  If you were here to try benefit the ecosystem, you would be invested in it, Using it for purchases when you can, the occasional trading is ok.

Trying to help the ecosystem is a good thing if you believe in something. But to say it has no use to you other than trading, doesn't sound like your even interested in the concept.

I really hope there aren't many people like this here for the sake of bitcoin

It's the law of economics if there is no use for them ie no one is trading with Bitcoin then there is no use for Bitcoin other than collecting so the price would go down because supply and demand would go down. so just holding is bad the more people who trade with bitcoin are making it successful because they are creating supply and demand the people who are being selfish and are only holding are not really contributing to this unique and revolutionary idea.

Nah, I just hold them. The price is too low at the moment. If I sell them now or use them to buy stuff, I guess I would be off at a loss. But I'm looking forward to use my BTC to buy something in the future when the price goes back up again! Maybe even into a new bubble!

Well if I'm going to buy something I'll do it in person for cash or in the shops with my cc, online with my cc also, and there's not that many things you can buy with btc, I can't pay my rent with it, can't buy my food with it and certainly can't pay my taxes with it! what else could I do other than gamble or day trade?

Gambling I lose most of the time so I tend to stick to day trading as I have more control and tend to profit most of the time.

So until btc becomes more widely accepted I really have no other use for it.

Why wouldn't you spend your BTC, then buy an equal amount of BTC on an exchange and/or on a trade? This would increase the amount of BTC adoption, will likely allow you to buy goods at a discount and increase the size of the bitcoin economy.

At the moment I am holding bitcoins but I would not ever rule out the chance of spending bitcoins and keeping some in storage when the time came. So far I have not felt the need to want to use bitcoin but sooner or later that time will come when more companies start accepting.

People that don't get paid in bitcoins or just don't have much, tend to hoard.
Personally i would spend more if i had access to a bitcoin atm so i can turn my fiat to bitcoins with ease..

i haven't spent any yet so far. i think retailers need to offer discounts that would offset the exchange fees.. in that case, i'd buy bitcoins off the exchange and then make my purchase since it wouldn't cost anything and would help bitcoin.

I'm not really spending much BTC.   I am adding more here and there.   I did just spend some recently on a new Trezor, but I immediately put that amount of BTC back into one of my wallets.

I would have bought it with credit card or debit card if they would have accepted it.   It was actually the first time that I have actually spent BTC.   I was pleasantly surprised with how easy it was.

I spend as much as I can. If I drain my btc wallet, which happens a lot, a couple mouse clicks on Coinbase can top it up $1,000 worth of Bitcoin instantly.

Because it increases the usage and acceptance of Bitcoin. Pay with Bitcoin, then use the fiat you would have used for the purchase to instead buy more Bitcoin. Voila.

Fees to convert Fiat to Bitcoin are high. Also lack of acceptance from the stores I most use.
But I spend on investing, so I do my part.

The exchange fees are generally very low and would be much lower then if you were to pay via a credit card. For a merchant to offer a small discount for consumers accepting bitcoin they would still end up on top because the cost for credit cards is usually in excess of 3%.

I think that's a wise idea and I'd like to do that too (though I don't have much at the minute) as I'm sure it's only a matter of time before we see quite a hefty price rise again, so holding on to coins for a while could be a good investement.

This is a commonly held view, but it's not so simple. We can't so easily gauge off-exchange demand. I suspect processors like Bitpay and Coinbase only sell on the exchanges when it is profitable for them to do so. And I don't think that they usually dump all coins they process on exchanges -- not at all -- so I am not sure how much it depresses price.

Only spending bitcoin when the merchant is offering a discount compare to credit card or check on goods and services where I would have bought anyway.

I spend it when I need to, but I try to hodl as much as I can. It's a much better payment method than other things, but if I need to pay in fiat, I have to wait around for a few days while I have it sent to my bank account to transact in less efficient ways.

I'm not really spending much BTC. At the moment I am holding bitcoins but I would not ever rule out the chance of spending bitcoins and keeping some in storage when the time came. So far I have not felt the need to want to use bitcoin but sooner or later that time will come when more companies start accepting.

And more smaller purchases.

Every chance I get. I used expedia to get my hotel reservations. purchased a few items from the net. If you are worried about spending your coin and your a hodler, just use coinbase to replenish the coins you spend, it only costs you 1 percent and then you make sure that you dont go down in your holdings. I believe they have new feature that does this automatically. but itss not hard to do it manually..

if we dont use bitcoin, then merchants wont take it and that wont help bitcoin one bit.. we all need to spend it when we can. Just rebuy it if you want. or don't...

What do you think?

Will shopping with Bitcoin be good or bad for the price of BTC?

They also have the option to hold certain % of btc with services like coinbase, at some point they will be able to purchase from suppliers etc in BTC.

I spend little bits nothing major.

I try to hold, also trading for more coins I like and for more Bitcoin is my overall goal.  I also spend on a potential investment opportunity I find on the forums any way to flip my coins for more with low risk is nice.  ;)

I really think that spending Bitcoin gives merchants more incentive to accept Bitcoin.  I think the potential lower price is very much worth the acceptance of Bitcoin.  It bothers me that people are complaining about the adoption of Bitcoin and see the short term value of the coin go down.  We need to be able to see the big picture and to me that is mass adoption.

If anything see it as a buying opportunity for strong hands.  The holders and people that understand how to use Bitcoin and realize what it win the end game!

Actually, I think the bitpay model of instantly converting to fiat is good for bitcoin. It adds liquidity to the market.

I might also argue that this is exactly what bitcoin is intended for... to be used as a means of transferring wealth. NOT as a store of value. It should not matter if bitcoin is $10 or $10,000. It's usefulness and desirability don't rely on its fiat value, but rather on the features that differentiate it from other forms of currency.

What's wrong with that? Money just changes hands, from the customer to another one that buys them from the store. Even if it was destroyed, it would just make the rest of the supply more valuable. Being able to use bitcoins in as many places as possible, and as easy as possible, is what makes it valuable. If everyone just kept their coins, its purchasing power would plummet.

Though you state some good points, I would have to disagree on it NOT being a long term store of value.

Coinbase has a feature that is called something along the lines of spend and recharge. It allows you to buy something with bitcoin in your coinbase account from a merchant that accepts bitcoin then coinbase will purchase an equal amount of bitcoin for you (debiting your bank account) so you end up with the same amount of bitcoin.

I think this is actually quite smart on their end because they would be making two fees, one from you repurchasing the bitcoin from them and one from the merchant.

it is definitely good for the price, i mean it will affect other people' s opinion towards BTC, and push the government to accept it further,
meanwhile it will promote the popularity of BTC, which is quite good for raising the price of BTC.

Yeah, that whole "debiting your bank account" isn't working for me. I don't trust companies that have been around for 40 years to automatically debit my account. I'm certainly not going to trust two kids that have been running a Bitcoin business out of an apartment in San Francisco for a year and a half.

BTC price is dropping in the last 3 weeks and you are waiting for something worthwhile?

And quotes like this tell us why the price keeps dropping LOL along with the biweekly "Dell Dump" we have the scaredy pants get out with a loss coiners like you......

You are the people I love, Without people like you the value of bitcoins would be over 800 dollars LOL. SO thank you, thank you for getting so scared and giving us cheap BTC :)

I still have not spent any bitcoins in a long time.   I have tried to get Restoration Hardware to accept BTC...so far have been unsuccessful.

I am also in the process of trying to get my dentist to start accepting BTC.   I am going to get veneers, so it would be cool if he accepted BTC.

Other than that, I am just staying put with what I have for the time being...riding the waves up and down.   Mainly down lately obviously...

I use it where ever i can:

- Pay rent through localbitcoins
- Pay for flight if i can
- Change for cash if fiat is not around
- Use it instead of fiat in cases where fiat is not very efficient or as easy (which happens alot)
- gain access to cash when banks are closed or to transfer to friends as cash rather than bank transfers

The more i use it the more the bitcoin ecosystem is turning :D

Rather than taking an exchange rate hit to 'replace it as you spend it' wouldn't it make more sense to just buy it as you need it, so buy the amount you need and spend it instantly so there is less exchange rate risk and you still support the system?

HOLD all coins...unless you buy at current rate and use at current rate. (defeats the purpose though)

Im transacting daily in bitcoin, not just "spending without rebuying" but I'm running a small business and paying and receiving almost 80% of all funds in and out in bitcoin - around $50-100 a day approx (0.1+ per day). Really pleased, its really possible to do business in bitcoin , and I'm not just doing it cos I'm a bitcoin fanboy and trying to only do business in bitcoin, its actually just easier, instant (especially to buy and sell advertising) - loving it!

I just read this:
http://www.finance-guy.net/finblog/how-will-you-spend-your-bitcoin/10/8/2014

It raises an interesting point that if we spend Bitcoin to buy stuff, the companies will most likely sell the BTC pretty quickly.

What do you think?

Will shopping with Bitcoin be good or bad for the price of BTC?
yes, I've often perform transactions to purchase goods with bitcoin. but not to a company. only fellow users of bitcoin, and it's been a lot here. it would be better if we spend for bitcoin bitcoin to use the goods / services at a company great. it will certainly increase the popularity of bitcoin

Title: Re: Are You Spending Bitcoin?

Yeh imo right now shopping is bad for the bitcoin price, dell , expedia etc, theyre obviously just selling off immediately - they need to, they run a business, and that isnt to speculate on bitcoin price - but while its bad in the short term, its essential and will lead to further adoption and eventually to price increasing due to mainstream adoption and mass usage... imo... or at least, I think its the only way to one day get to mainstream adoption

I'd really love to spend some of my coins on things I want, but I just can't bring myself to spend them at such low price. Everytime I almost persuade myself to spend them the price seems to have fallen lower and lower. Feel like I'd just be losing money spoending them now.

Sometime I spend bitcoin, in particular when there is some sale for people which use it (good way to promote bitcoin). Anyway, I don't want spend so much bitcoin because I think that (especially now) it isn't a good thing to spend, considering that price is low..

You'd only be losing money if the price for 1 bitcoin rose from the time you spent it. Currently that isn't a problem!

You can always buy back the bitcoin you spent with 10% more, so that your bitcoin holdings are ever increasing or steady.

I have no choice but to spend bitcoin I earn, in order to cover my daily expenses.
Bitcoin is still unstable, and I can't wait that bitcoin became more stable or raise in value.
I need money now.

Do you get paid a wage in bitcoin? The price fluctuation is definitely a problem when it comes to being used as a currency. Wouldn't be too bad if it kept rising though  ;D.

I'm a hoarder and have no shame in that. I think bitcoin has the potential to be far bigger than it is now so I'm holding on for the price rise to reflect this in the future. I'd spend my coins then but only then.
