Title: Solo mine with no walet in server mode?
Post by: Cranky4u on August 14, 2014, 11:50:17 PM
Is it possible to solo mine BTC without having an active wallet in server mode?

I vaguely remmeber reading about starting one of the main mining software packages with a stipulated address in the .conf . If a block was found, the miner would report it to the network and claim payment to the addy supplied in the .conf

If this is true, can someone please detail how to do it or point me to a guide.

There is a solo mining pool.  Basically, its a pool, but if you hit the block, you get all the reward.

You always need a pool to mine at, if you aren't starting up a wallet server where do you mine?

BFGminer requires a BTC address to receive the payment in solo-mining but again you need a pool to mine at, and this pool is usually your wallet server in solo mode.

You still need a full bitcoin node to mine solo, but you can start it with the wallet disabled (disablewallet=1 in config). With cgminer you specify the wallet address you wish to mine to with --btc-address and it can be an address anywhere, even cold storage; it doesn't have to be in the wallet of the bitcoind you're running.
