Providing links isn't as useful as you writing out the summary that can then be referred to by every person that comes along in the future with the same questions. This means that any and all transactions through testnet are only usable within the testnet for testing purposes. While, in theory you could pay for things using the testnet, it's like accepting wooden nickles for your services. Sure, you get something, but it's just junk.

Also avoid buying mining equipment, just buy BTC and hodl it. Sites like that offer a convenient way of dealing with faucets and might save you a lot of time.
