Title: Interest in Charter Cities, Free States and similar projects?
Post by: Shuai on March 31, 2012, 07:09:55 PM
For those of you who don't know what I'm talking about, I'll introduce it quickly. A Charter City, is a city that is created with a set of unique rules, often focusing on a free market, personal freedom, low taxes and no government interference in the lives of private people (beyond peace keeping). All this is done in an attempt to spur economic growth in order increase opportunities for poor people who are willing to migrate to get jobs. The idea is to create cities like this on land donated by developing nations, such as Honduras, to give their poor a safe place to migrate to, rather than having to illegally move to the US or Europe.

On to the topic of discussion.

A charter city, in addition to being a place of opportunity for poor migrant workers, also requires multinational corporations to invest and set up factories and offices. Last, but not least, it also requires an international middle class of skilled and specialized workers and entrepreneurs who can help manage the city and bring and share their knowledge, skills and know-how to the city.

What I want to ask is, are there anyone here who would be interested in moving to, or supporting, a charter city or Free State, if such an opportunity arose? It would mean living in a country where true libertarian values prevailed, and I know many people who are into Bitcoin also are such inclined. Finally, a charter city would probably be the best candidate for a sovereign territory that would adopt bitcoin as a means to pay taxes etc. since there would be free competition between currencies, and there would be no network effect in place with current currencies.

I know I would move to Trujillo in Honduras the very day a Charter City was established there (an opened up for migrants, of course). Anyone else?

It is possible though our need to change for immediate survival will trump our desire for a change with the most promising long term opportunity:
