Title: Who actually spend bitcoins ? and for what ?
Post by: californiaquail on August 29, 2014, 12:14:38 AM
I read a lot here and there about Crypto as currencies, bitcoin as currency and how it might change the way people do business etc... I see a lot of great innovations recently like nxt, qtl, stealth coins and so on...

But i have the feeling people are holding to their coins, or trading them in hope for profit, and dont actually consider buying anything with it, not to mention it's really hard to get some coins today.
No one wants to be the guy who spent $1 000 000 on a slice of pizza.

How do you think bitcoin & cryptos will bring value to traditional /e-commerce, how can it grow mainstream if evryone holds in hope for the 100000$ bitcoin ?
What do you think people would be ready to risk spending their bitcoins for ?

I for one try to spend my bitcoins as frequently as possible. I can just buy more when I need them.  After my first experience booking a hotel with Expedia I don't ever want to use my Visa again.  It was so easy.  Granted it isn't easy to spend bitcoins day to day, but I try to seek out bitcoin accepting  businesses when possible.  Maybe I am a minority.

Hey, you can rebuy Bitcoins anytime. For some goods, like ASIC miners, you can only buy with Bitcoins  :)

I've made purchases from Overstock.com, TigerDirect.com, and NewEgg.com since they started accepting bitcoin.  I've subscribed to the Chicago Sun-Times since they started accepting bitcoin (and called their customer service to thank them and explain my reason for subscribing). I've switched from Comcast to Dish Satellite service since they started accepting bitcoin (and explained to both Comcast customer service and Dish my reason for switching). I order my take-out pizza from Rosati's since they started using Menufy and accepting bitcoin (and explained to the restaurant manager my reason for purchasing from them when I picked up my pizzas).

Businesses that accept bitcoin will win my loyalty over their competition, and they'll know it.

I use it to rent my hotel room with expedia.. THere are tons of ways to use bitcoin now. and its easy to replace them too.... I have probably spent 3k in services this summer, before that the only company that got my coins was BFL and we all know how that went, lol...

We have to get into the spending bitcoin mindset too, if we dont, we wont create an economy. Its still okay to hoard, just replace your coin as soon as you spend it, like thru coinbase, they have a way to do it automatically..

I have sold coffee beans to several people for bit coin after only being open for business a few days. I use it for hotels through expedia and buy things from Overstock. If you are worried about using up your stash you can buy an equivalent amount back for your purchases so you can support the growing economy and maintain your wallet.

With so many ways now to be able to purchase goods using bitcoins I do see more and more people using bitcoins over their current currency to make purchases. For those that wish to hold on to their bitcoins I say that is their choice, who knows maybe it will pay off for them. I tend to hold some bitcoins and have some that I spend freely when I see something I wish to purchase.

People mostly spend bitcoins to buy virtual items or better get rid of Paypal chargebacks

Just my 2 cents.

Well, why not spend Bitcoin??? It's a great means of paying for things without actually registering or using your Credit Card. It really is like electronic cash. If you buy something with cash, you don't need to register, provide personal information or anything... That's what Bitcoin offers you!

I would not be surprised if many people are like this. There are a lot of people who have a vested interest in seeing bitcoin succeed and they will likely direct their business to people/businesses who accept bitcoin and make such fact known (and subsequently repurchase an equal amount of bitcoin on an exchange). It would be a win for everyone, the bitcoin user would have a greater chance that bitcoin succeed, and potentially receive some kind of discount for paying in bitcoin, the merchant would benefit from higher sales and would likely realize that they have zero charge back costs and the cost of processing the payments are much lower.

I already spent some Bitcoin, of course! I bought some ASICMiner USB Miners with them back in 2013 of course. It was mainly to become familiar with mining and have some hands-on experience. Of course I didn't make a fortune with them, though :D

You are right, Bitcoin won't become more valuable unless it's more used. Stores will start realizing that bitcoins are much better than traditional options like credit cards and start accepting them. Also, it should be easier to use them, like it's easy to use a credit or debit card.

I've been spending (and earning) bitcoins since 2011. The most bitcoins I've spent on a single purchase was a domain name for $300 when they were about $2 each. Which means I'm already the guy who spent 150 BTC (currently worth over $71,000) for a domain name that I don't even use.

I may be Bitcoin poor (relatively speaking), but I'm one of the Bitcoin economy's most active supporters.

On a regular basis, I spend Bitcoin on domain names through Namecheap. I also often purchase gift cards to Papa John's and CVS through Gyft.com, and use those to purchase things.

Whenever I travel with my family I buy my plane tickets, book my hotel, and rent a car with Bitcoin through cheapair.com.

When Bitcoin is rising in price, I tend to hedge my gains by purchasing precious metals through amagimetals.com.

How does Menufy work? I wasn't aware of them, so I just checked them out. I thought they would be a service like Foodler, but it seems like what they do is integrate their order/payment system on business's websites.

Is there a list of Menufy restaurants somewhere? I'd like to see if there are any in my area. :)

Yep. As far as I can tell, that's what they do. Here's one example in the Chicagoland area:

Well, I only traded a small portion on my BTCs for fiat, but I mosty use to buy DRM-free software and games.
And no, I don't hold a good amount of BTCs. If BTC is money, I'll use it at its purpose. I only hold a few bitcents(not even 1BTC in the day when it was only 15$, nothing compared to the ones that have more than 10BTC and yet stills to hold them.

Nothing wrong to the people that hold, but the more we use, the more options we could bring to us, since they could see that accepting Bitcoin is profitable.

It is the only thing I now use to buy on the internet. If someone had a really great deal on something I need I might hold my nose and use a debit card, but mostly that is a thing of the past for me.
I don't understand how people "get" bitcoin unless they are using it. Online transactions are what bitcoins do better. I suppose some people collect cool cars and never drive them also, but what fun is that?

A huge amount of bitcoins is used for buying other cryptocoins. It's almost the only thing I've used it for. Played some rounds on dragons tale but its a losing game.

same, everyone just spend bitcoin to makes even more bitcoin, so only in crypto world for now, bitcoin should be looked more from a tech point of view and not under the "speculation tab" only

Mining equipment, food, vacuum cleaner, light fixtures, big comfy comforter set (with Euro pillows), Starbucks cards and with that...my favorite coffee maker: a burgundy Verismo. Books (lots of books), too much from Home Depot lately. If something I want or need can be purchased with bitcoin I try to do it as directly as reasonable. My vacuum was from Overstock but many times I order Amazon with Gyft cards (same with Home Depot and my friggen house always needs something ;-)

From what I gather the OP thinks it's bad to hold Bitcoin and at the same time it is bad to spend Bitcoin.  I've noticed a trend of people who like to make arguments that bitcoin is doomed for one of these reasons but never both at the same time.  The guy the spent a thousand dollars on a pizza helped bring Bitcoin to where it is today..  The guy holding his coins helped bring Bitcoin to where it is today and that is what has made Bitcoin special and widely known.  So your logic that it will be doomed for either of these reasons is just way off base.  It's you that doesn't undterstand what will make Bitcoin succeed and not the people you think aren't making good decisions with their coins(in mhy opinion).

Although pizza guy only parted with his cash because he had no impetus to hold onto his coins. And i think this is the problem with bitcoin in its current phase - many people all think theyre either gonna get very rich, or lose everything and look back on it with a smile. theres too much temptation, which will play into human nature until at least the price becomes a little more predictable. nothing to say it's doomed though, why should it be? the ability to fend off peaks and troughs, for example with the recent whale selling, is proof alone that sentiment is positive.

The spend on retail is probably mostly driven by the likes of online retailers like Overstock. This will soon change once Xapo get their cards out which seems to be log jammed and bitpay gets closer to its 1 million merchant target for end of 2016

Big ticket items at $10 million each are bullion dealers

Individual retailers in niche markets also seem to be having success

- average customer spend is higher = higher sales
