Title: Members hiding online status
Post by: bitlane on April 09, 2012, 10:17:38 PM
First off, THIS JUST FUCKING BOILS MY BLOOD.

Either people want to be members around here, OR THEY DO NOT.

I vote that the ability to HIDE ONLINE STATUS be disabled once and for all.

That is all.

With regards,

Technically he should be dead.

I do agree with him though. We had this argument on an old social network of mine too, where people were complaining about the feature to "hide" your online status. It seems like a shit thing to do but there is an honest use for it as well as a dishonest use for it, the honest reason obviously being for people who have limited time and don't want to invite the bombardment of discussions. The dishonest reason being to avoid creditors.

Why would I want people to know I'm online? People will PM, I'll realize they know I'm on, then suddenly log out and pretend I'm not there while I read the PM via email to see if I feel like responding to it immediately or continue pretending I'm napping/in town/on vacation/deathly ill/etc.

Why is it such a problem if someone wants to hide their online status?

i didn't even realise you could hide your status... but thanks to the OP, i've now noticed the option in my profile settings.

who wants to bet there's a large correlation between showing your online status and being a member of facebook.

Let me be subtle....

IF YOU CHOOSE TO PARTAKE IN TRADE OR UNDERTAKE BUSINESS OR TRANSACTIONS IN ANY WAY, SHAPE OR FORM ON THIS FORUM OR RELY ON IT TO SERVE SAID INTENTIONS IN ANY WAY, SHAPE OR FORM, YOU SHOULD BE DENIED THE ABILITY TO HIDE YOUR ONLINE STATUS.

SELLERS/INVESTORS/LENDERS/BORROWERS/BUSINESS OPERATORS/SERVICE SUPPLIERS.

No more excuses.....from anyone.

If you click on someone's name, there is a handy "last active" function.  This is a non-issue.

I do business with people on the forums, and my online status changes nothing about that.

Let me suggest you seek another forum that will support your fascist leanings and control disorder to disable individual privacy.

Also, this:

Why would I want people to know I'm online? People will PM, I'll realize they know I'm on, then suddenly log out and pretend I'm not there while I read the PM via email to see if I feel like responding to it immediately or continue pretending I'm napping/in town/on vacation/deathly ill/etc.

I always hide my online status. But the forum also always gives you the time that I was last active.
What's the fucking problem?
Would it be wise for me to appear to be online 24/7/365 just because I leave 200 tabs open in my browser?

Look at the person's last online time and you'll know the last time they opened a page.

I don't see any reason to prevent that. Most scammers aren't going to care that people know they're online.

But the forum also always gives you the time that I was last active.

Only you can see that stat when your online status is hidden.

Good to know. No longer need to log out, cowering in fear of "live" human contact.

Are you sure about that?  I can see the last active stat of every member on this thread...  I assume some are hidden (like myself).

Call Display/VoiceMail....Online Status/PMs....all stemming originally from simply leaving the 'porch light' on or off (while peering out of a dark window) to ward off evil personal interactions and screen without obligation (also works to screw kids out of halloween candy).

Who would have known that humanity could have made it SO FAR in such a short period of time.

Humanity didn't progress due to a bunch of undesired interruptions.

So.. let's get this straight: You sayin' that other users see my last active status as being from 5 months ago when i turned on the "Hide my online status" thingy?

Nope.  Your "last active" is showing as being today.  My online status is also hidden but I'm pretty sure that my profile shows me as last being active today.

In my opinion, showing online status doesn't make people any more likely to respond to either PMs or posts directed at them in the forums.  Last activity makes it clear whether or not they still visit the boards so I don't really see how removing the ability to hide online status is beneficial.  If they're going to ignore you, they're going to do so no matter what.

One of the ways humanity has advanced to where it has is by realizing that we all want to live life a little differently and that one solution doesn't fit all. You want your status constantly known. That's fine. I'm not going to complain about it. But you don't get to complain that I choose to do something different, something that does not hurt you. You have no right to that information and I have not entered into any contract, implicit or explicit, that requires it.

Turning off online status is one of the first things I do on every forum.

Could you explain yourself more clearly ?

First how does that work ? and how does that matter ?

I'm pretty sure I have a browser with a btctalk tab left open on one of my PCs at any given time. Does that mean I'm online ?

If you send me a PM while I'm online do you think I will notice it as if it would ring a bell of flash lights ?

Are you really talking about bitcointalk forum or some IM fantasy ?

Leaving a tab open will not show you online, unless you cheat with an auto-reloader.

Please don't. It's actually useful for someone to see when a mod happens to be on. Of course, if you don't want to get a bunch of PMs, then that's probably a smart move.

For most other people, unless you're a business, it really doesn't matter at all.

Sheesh guys it really wouldn't be that hard to write a greasemonkey script to grab the latest time online for a given user and compare it with the current time, and show the "online" indicator manually.

Yet another control freak who needs to get over the Internet before it destroys him ....

I liked it when the forum allowed to change PseudoNyms ... that was neat, it stopped presumptions and flame wars continuing on across multiple threads because you never knew who was who exactly so just took the writings on their merits ... and anybody who likes to be identified with some daft pseudonym or another could equally keep their badge. Can we bring that back theymos?

It's only per user. Once you have either "Donator" or "VIP" status, you can change your name at will. "Donator" is 10 BTC, "VIP" is 50 BTC or more.

Oh, I guess I missed that ... is there anywhere these subtleties of the forum are posted? Thnx in advance.

And I guess in that vein, the OP is now going to call for 1 btc from users if they want to hide their online status?

I like the status feature Enable/Disable.

When I am not doing business on the forums, I leave my status off, when I am doing business I turn it on to notify buyers/traders etc that I am online etc.

I noticed that sometimes when I'm online a bunch of posts will be made in the market place section and after I reply no posts will be made for a few minutes.

Afterwards I'll go do something else and then check back in and once again a large influx of posts are made.

My interpretation of this is that my online status is being tracked.

Knowing that there is a feature available which allows me to prevent this is very comforting.

Because you are a 'High' level miner. Those who mine at that 'High' level are awarded the ability to hide.

Just to be clear..... you get 'High' on Crack, right ?
