If I copy my wallet.dat file from my win7 laptop at work, can I copy it onto my Ubuntu Linux computer at home? If I do, will sending bitcoin from the laptop be reflected automatically on the linux box? Or will I have broken something and end up loosing BitCoin?  Thanks (I do not want to use a wallet in the cloud for this)

you're fine for viewing balances, but as soon as you spend from one wallet, they'll become unsynchronised.

i'm actually investigating the use of truecrypt+dropbox for a similar purpose.

To elaborate, the wallet from which you spend the coins will generate a hidden "change (https://en.bitcoin.it/wiki/Change)" address which will not be present on the other wallet*, causing you to lose a few coins (actually, you don't really lose them, they'll just only be visible (and spendable) from one wallet and not the other). However, if you always create a new copy of your wallet file after any time you spend some coins or create a new address, and remember to always transfer this up-to-date wallet file before you do anything else, there'll be no problem.

*Actually, I think the standard client generates a certain number of change addresses in advance for the sole purpose of avoiding this exact problem, but I'm not 100% sure. Best to play it safe and keep your wallet files synchronised.

Put your wallet on USB falsh disk and make symlink in .bitcoin/ directory
I am using modified launcher in ubuntu which unmount my USB after I close the client and tell me (via notify-send) when it's safe to remove it from PC.

Thanks for the answers.  I was hoping Bitcoin Armory would be able to do this, but it wont start on my win7 laptop.  What if I make a symlink to wallet.dat and put it in the UbuntuOne area of both of my computers?  Think that will work?
