i noticed someone sent me .00001 btc recently.. it hasn't been verified yet actually. looked up the address and he's made plenty of donations, and some signatures contained links to peoples' accounts on here. thanks, whoever it is. so far .238 btc have left his account.

They're not donating, they're fishing.

Seems like a newbie trying to amaze everyone/ trying to get everyone's attention. He is member of this forum too, I suspect.

Trying to find active BTC addresses is more likely.

Tracking who owns which address and eventually discovering the identity of an address.

I've received many of these dust transactions. they never finalize, they are a pain in the  butt, ive always wondered what good does it do the person thats doing this? i know that multibit just kicks them out now, but still I hope they arent trying to find a security flaw or something..

It really isn't a donation spree. It's merely advertising. And threads like this prove that it's working :) Interestingly the entity seems to be sending Bitcoins to every address that's tagged on Blockchain.info!

There was one set of dust transactions that happened several months ago that was sent from addresses that were associated with addresses of known gambling sites. I would not discount the theory that the same rationale is behind a lot of these types of transactions.

find more active addresses for what?

If you look at the blockchain link you'll notice they tagged the address they sent from, it links to their website. They're trying to advertise their Bitcoin-accepting Forex website. They're using the Blockchain to spam essentially, kind of fitting seeing as forex sites have a reputation for sending spam emails.

Yeah, it's spam, clogging up the block chain. It's like junk mail, a total nuisance.

No it does not work. Have you ever looked at addresses with very big balances? Have you noticed that these addresses receive a lot of spam transactions with public notes (on blockchain.info) that are begging for people to send money back to them?
