Title: [CLOSED] 50Gh 1 week mining contract worth ~230 BTC
Post by: jamesg on April 20, 2012, 06:30:08 PM
Hello fellow bitcoiners,

We’ve seen raffles here the in gambling section of the site. There have been small prizes thus far. Nothing too big, nothing too exciting. Well, amazingrando and I are here to change that.

Welcome to the 50Gh 1 week mining contract raffle!

You read that right. Amazingrando and I have teamed up to raffle off a massive 50Gh one week mining contract to the lucky winner. Each ticket is only .5 BTC each!

Imagine, turning .5 BTC into 223 BTC (or more if you run on GPUMAX), a return of at least 450 times the cost of a single ticket.

So you’re probably wondering, “how can I verify that these guys actually have the hashes to back this up”. We wondered the same thing.... so here are some links to ease your worries.

Gigavps’ farm monitoring page -> http://gigamining.com/mgpumon/
Amazingrando’s the top spot -> https://www.maxbtc.com/top-miners

Rules of the contest:

  • The odds of winning this raffle is 1 / (total # of tickets sold)
  • This raffle will end on Friday, April 27, 2012 at 3pm EST.
  • You may purchase as many tickets as you like.
  • Whether buying a single ticket or bulk tickets, each ticket will have its own ticket number and therefore a unique hash.
  • The only piece of information you need to submit is your email address. This will be hashed so it will not be given out to the public.
  • The raffle will be decided by:
    • We will combine the SHA256 hash of each email address with the hash of your ticket number and the first block hash to be found after the raffle ends. Here is an example:
    • sha(sha(email) + sha(ticketNumber) + hashOfBlockFound)
    • The lowest hash wins!
  • The mining contract will start within 48 hours of second party validation of the results.

Enjoy and good luck!

FAQ

Q: Can I point the hashing power where ever I like?
A: YES

Q: What will you do in the event of downtime?
A: The contract will be fulfilled based on the total number of difficulty 1 shares submitted. That number should be 7,040,798.

Q: How can i verify you guys are sending me 50Gh?
A: No need. As long as you get 7,040,798 shares sent to you, that's 50Gh for 7 days.

I'll ask the questions now as I am sure others will eventually...

1.  Buyer can point to pool of choice?
2.  Downtime (though unexpected but should it occur) appended to contract?
3.  How to verify 50 Gh/ (logs from cgminer)?

Not everyone would know that 7,040,798 shares is 50 Gh/s over 7 days... ;)

Don't forget that by the time the auction ends difficulty should change, and it looks like almost a 5% decrease.  That would be another 10 btc+ in rewards from the 1 week contract.  :)

You must risk to be rewarded!  ;)

We are offering up part of our normal mining incomes to have some fun and make a profit. Only time will tell if this venture is fruitful.

That's part of the fun of this, we just don't know how it's going to turn out.  The only certainty is that someone who bought 1 or more tickets is going to be more than 220 btc richer at the end of the mining contract. ;)

Thanks to everyone who has entered thus far!  :D

If you like to think about things in $$$ then here is some math for you.

~230 BTC mining contract * $5.37 current gox price ~= $1,235  :o

rjk, if you want to setup your own bitcoind, we'll point the hashing power there. With GPUMAX, you can probably get 25% MOAR coins.

I hope you bought your tickets.....  ;)

Of course I did. ;D I'm wondering if I should set up a mini-pool and hope for a freshly minted 50 BTC block or two to keep as collectibles, or just line Pirate's pockets. Hmmmm.

If you are going to setup a pool for yourself, talk with Graet from ozco.in about ecoinpool.

I was helping the creator of ecoinpool test it with some hashing power and we found a block in the first 25k shares!

It would be nice to have a list of emailhashes + ticketids to be able to confirm that you really did choose the correct winner.

Also anyone winning should relly point this to p2pool - 7,040,798 shares there would net you a LOT more than a few thousand BTC! ;D

Please show me your calculation of how ~7 million shares mined on p2pool are worth less than 5000 BTC. ::)

A hint: shares on p2pool have a difficulty a few hundred times higher than "1"...

Oops I see what you are saying, but such a large scale operation would probably be using a proxy that provides diff 1 shares anyways. Also, 7,040,798 shares is a calculation based on diff 1 shares at current difficulty from 50Ghash/s for one week.

Hi farfiman,  I will need to speak with Amazingrando before we publish the number of tickets sold. I will however release some stats now for the sake of entertainment.

There have been 33 totals orders on bit-pay and the only product not sold thus far is the 30 tickets for a 15% discount.

Hi Sukrim, we will have a spreadsheet of all the tickets published for a second party to verify. Everything in the spreadsheet will already be hashed along with the final hashes.

As for the shares we will be submitting, they will be difficulty 1 shares.  ;)

I have been doing real good staying away from the Casino this year and investing all my spare cash into mining equipment as I used to have a small gambling problem.  Now I frequent these forums more and more and low and behold, I find this post.   Well,  I have will power and one main rule when it comes to gambling.   GO BIG OR GO HOME!     Needless to say I will be purchasing tickets before your deadine and thank you for the offer.

Hopefully we're not resuscitating anyone's gambling problems, but our thinking with this raffle was just that - GO BIG!  The bigger the reward the bigger the risk for Gigavps and me, but that's also what makes it more exciting!

I'm especially excited for the winner, whoever that ends up being.  What do you do with 230 btc?  Hold on to it until btc prices hit $30 again?  Do you invest it on GLBSE?  Do you buy yourself a new flat screen TV and an xbox?  :)

I'm in for 90 tickets for 36 BTC.

If anyone wants the pro-rated amount of BTC mined from the 7M+ shares if we win, send any amount to: 1RaFfLeY1bqDhR1ZPpsTxXa64Q4MPxXki. Must send from personal wallet. Anything over 36 coins total will be refunded to the sending address. Example: 0.360 coins gets you 1% of mined coins. Otherwise, I'll take all proceeds from 90 tickets.

PM me for the email I used when buying tickets to verify hash if you wish.

Offer good until 1 hour before draft.

Welp, my intestinal fortitude is insufficient to set up a running ecoinpool, even after an entire weekend blown on trying to make it work. I just realized (again) how much I loathe tracking down and compiling dependencies for linux programs, and then attempting to learn how to use a complex script-based language/config syntax for debugging. Ah well, if it were easy everyone would do it and that wouldn't be too good either.

If compiling linux libraries isn't your thing, maybe poolserverj would be a bit easier to setup.

Last I heard, it was abandoned, or at least unmaintained. Also, eeew java. ;D
Nvm, it was just a bit of an exercise to see how easy it would be or whether I could do it, not anything that I needed for a project.

Question:
How would this work with p2pool?

Hi VoluntaryMan,

We could point the hashing power to a p2pool node but our miners are not optimized with the proper settings for p2pool. I was also going to use my BFL singles rig to run the contract and they do not work well with p2pool.

My recommendation would be to run the contract on a large pool (deepbit or slush) if you are feeling lucky or abcpool.co if you want to get close to the PPS payout.

GPUMAX is not selling many shares lately so these are the best strategies IMHO.

Best,
gigavps

Would this also not work well on p2pmining.com ?

It should if their server can handle the load. Last time I checked, they were at 10Gh. So we would take them to 6x their normal volume.

In case you guys were wondering what this type of hashing power looks like....

So it's a little hard to get a shot of the entire room because it is so small. The room most of the GPUs are in along with the singles is just 9x16 to make the most of the three tons of AC.

https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-H_VpRbz9XGs/T3L6P7On2XI/AAAAAAAAA28/Mo2j7Fk_cvI/s720/IMG_0226.JPG

https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-ocQApvAupNI/T3L6Onx3yBI/AAAAAAAAA20/vOegge5BNVc/s720/IMG_0227.JPG

Here is a shot through the side door looking that the rack farthest away in the previous picture. You'll notice that the bottom rack is empty. This will be the home of the 4 mini rigs. If they are too big to fit on the rack, I will remove it and they will sit on the floor.

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-9baYs6fmbg8/T3L6cPlIW7I/AAAAAAAAA3M/SixhnUWE9xw/s720/IMG_0229.JPG

Here is a pic from outside of the room but still inside the warehouse. You can see the HVAC ducts to push all cooling into the room.

https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-6B4Hyov1Nr8/T3L6c-m7ZzI/AAAAAAAAA3U/uaXHTFof5Vc/s640/IMG_0230.JPG

Since I only have three tons of AC at the moment, some rigs are still in the warehouse portion. With cgminer, they self regulate to 75c.

Thanks to everyone who has played so far!

There have been 55 orders total and nobody has bought the 30 tickets @ 15% discount yet.  :)

We are beyond the halfway point. What are you going to do with ~230 BTC?

Hi farfiman,

I will speak with amazingrando this morning and see if we agree on releasing the odds. Until then, we have now had 61 orders. The only product not purchased in the 30 tickets @ a 15% discount.

TTBit also said earlier in the thread he purchased a whopping 90 tickets!  :o

Good luck.

That's actually a good question. I'd point it at p2pool just to support p2pool.

I will discuss this with amazingrando. I have over 12Gh of BFL equipment that will not run on p2pool and will get high stales. Also, I am not sure we are going to reconfigure 25Gh of each of our farms to run properly with p2pool. While it's a good idea to support p2pool, the practicalities of the matter are also something to consider.

Hi deepDown,

We will publish the list once the raffle is over. All emails in the list will be hashed so only you will be able to find your email hash and corresponding ticket numbers.

Ticket numbers are assigned based of when you placed your order. If there are 500 tickets purchased before you and you purchased 1 ticket, you will get ticket number 501.

If you are not a programmer, don't worry, we will post a link that will create the proper hash of your email so you can easily search the list.

Best,
gigavps

Congrats on a successful raffle! Looks like your risk paid off. You'll make more than if you kept it for mining!
Over 90 BTC profit! Sweet!

I was going to play near the end if the total tickets sold kept the risk-win ratio acceptable. Perhaps next time. Too many tickets sold to be worth the 0.5 BTC! Oh well...

Congrats whoever wins.

Thanks bitlotto. Your calculations are a little off because they don't consider the discounts given on bulk tickets. Nevertheless, this raffle will be profitable.

That wouldn't be a fair deal. Mine has better odds compared to the prize. ;) Just teasing! LOL

You can just setup an account at a pool like ozco.in, maxbtc.com, etc and we will point the hashing power there for a week. You get freshly minted coins!

No need to run bitcoind yourself.

Edit: sorry my error with time zones. :)

Post by: jamesg on April 27, 2012, 05:29:16 PM
So, if the time is up now, can we have a table before the first hash block, so any manipulation is out of the question?

Edit: sorry my error with time zones. :)

In any case I think it should be nice to have the table  published immediately after the raffle closes.

So things should happen in this order:

1. 3pm arrives
2. We shut down all purchase buttons
3. We publish the hashed emails with ticket numbers and ticket hashes
4. We declare the block hash that will become the third part of the final hash for each ticket
5. Block arrives
6. Publish the results with the block hash and final hash without determining a winner
7. Allow third parties to declare which final hash is the winner
8. Verify third party results

All entries for the raffle can be found here -> http://pastebin.com/kb0vmvgQ

Use this service to figure out the hash of your email -> http://hash.online-convert.com/sha256-generator

Once you have the hash, you can search the paste bin text for your tickets.

There are three columns, ticket number, hashed email address and hashed ticket number.

Block number 177473 will determine the final hashes for all tickets.

Block 177473 has arrived!

Here are the results -> http://pastebin.com/Tgv098AW

5 columns now (ticket number, email hash, ticket number hash, blockHash, final hash)

The final hash was calculated by: sha(sha(email) + sha(ticketNumber) + hashOfBlockFound)

Let's see who won!

nope.
439350876daf0f6b178b3e7cdef71734ae2aa75a53018dfcd31856a012e1e90b

You may look up your hash in the last column of giga's table. If it's lower than
 0055296d8aa76dbde18c60689305bdb96d68bcfe639d1faceceacf50c7e38f18
you win (hint: look at the leading zeros!)

Note: that's why I'm saying: Gigavps, just sort the table by the last column ascending!

Ordered from Lowest Hash in CSV format.

Looks like we have independent verification and I can confirm ticket #562 is the winner!

I used a little javascript to verify so that it is more accessible to others.

Code:
(function($) {

$(document).ready(function() {

var   $body = $('body')
, text = $body.text()
, lines = text.split('\n')
, lowest = null
, lowestTicket = null
, decimal
, lineArr;

for (var i = 0; i < 885; i++)
{
lineArr = lines[i].split('\t');
decimal = parseInt(lineArr[lineArr.length - 1], 16);

if (lowest === null)
lowest = decimal;
else if (decimal < lowest)
{
lowest = decimal;
lowestTicket = lineArr[0];
}
}

alert(lowestTicket);
});

})(jQuery);

And the HTML page needed

Code:
<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD XHTML 1.0 Transitional//EN" "http://www.w3.org/TR/xhtml1/DTD/xhtml1-transitional.dtd">
<html xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml">

<title>Untitled Document</title>
<script type="text/ecmascript" src="https://ajax.googleapis.com/ajax/libs/jquery/1.7.2/jquery.min.js"></script>
<script type="text/ecmascript" src="script.js"></script>
</head>

<body>{output from pastebin}</body>
</html>

I consider raffles with unlimited tickets as something very close to a scam.
Even with limited tickets and fixed prices I am not really fond of them, so I'd vote "no" on this.

Also please post them in the "Gambling" section, not in "Marketplace" in the future, should you do it again.

Amazingrando and I offered him two options:

1. Mining with the hashing power for a week at the pool of his choice.
2. Take a payout right now of 110% PPS to current difficulty.

cncguru chose option #2.

Ah, I see what you're asking.

Well cncguru claims to be the winner. If you know the email that he used when he purchased the ticket, you could check the sha256 has to see if it matches. That would confirm the email hash part of the Winning Equation.

I do not know how the ticket numbers were issued and when placed for the second part of the equation.

The third part was just the block hash.

As for ticket numbers, they are based on the sequence in which orders came in to bit-pay.

sha256sum provides different results.
Code:
$ echo "emailaddress@domain.com" | sha256sum
9d886f71d7ee1dc93e058fafd21f25715eff3b779b68070053c728551621d37b  -

www.online-convert.com sha256 hash of emailaddress@domain.com returns
c78f0c7d38ff568dce69dd355e7759a1e962b5c83ff85884ce02f650c2d0d646

Why the discrepancy.

you need "-n" for no newline

OK, wow that was fun!!!

Now how about a raffle for a mini rig box???

(BFL has to deliver one first I guess,LOL)

 ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D

cncguru has verified that he is owner of the email address that purchased the winning ticket.

Amazingrando and I offered him two options:

1. Mining with the hashing power for a week at the pool of his choice.
2. Take a payout right now of 110% PPS to current difficulty.

cncguru chose option #2.

Thanks again to everyone for playing!

Kind of dissapointing that he took the coins...    I know its easier for you guys but its no different than bitlotto ... the whole point was getting the hashing power ....

I kind of agree. It was neat that it was different than just BTC but kind of sad it changed right at the end. BitLotto is different though. I don't offer an prize and sell way more tickets than the prize is worth. I just always pay 99% of whatever people put in. ;) Offering an amount at the beginning to raffle off would IMHO be a rip off. The suckers at the beginning would play but everyone else would wait till the end to see if the number of tickets sales is higher or lower than the prize amount. If it's lower it's a good deal and the operator ends up losing BTC. If it's higher than the money is better spent at BitLotto for the odds are better compared to the prize. Who knows how many people would really pay attention though.

I am sorry you guys feel this way.

Amazingrando and I put up large sums of our mining income with no idea what was going to happen. We also over delivered on option #2 by paying 110% PPS which cncguru was super excited about. It was his choice to make.

Finally, the results of the raffle, IMHO, went off without hassle and we had third party validation of the results.

I could not have asked for a better result and am very pleased with how things turned out.

True , but why give him the option? It wasn't in the original post. Anybody could start a raffle with 200 btc as a prize.
Yours was special BECAUSE it was Mining power as a prize.  Will It be possible to trade the the next 1st prize ( BFL thingy) for its
worth in coins? Oh well, maybe I'm just trolling but its the way I feel....  Still congrats to the winner  :)

I think we should also give a prize for the highest hash.
Just as impressive (or likely) as the lowest one:
fffbfd600aa2d0e0eb2ee5439a91865cceb96b3505a235c57d24a3b945ff9b4f
Ticket holder 402 a preliminary congrats (no prize though)!  ;D

'tis a good point. I'll kick giga a BTC to pay the highest hash. :)

Well this is an excellent idea, it is no easy thing to get the furthest possible hash from the winning one, though it doesn't in the least surprise me that it was one of my tickets (from 369 to 413) that scooped the booby prize, thanks to the OPs for a fun game & whilst not the best in town I still enjoyed it.

Congrats to cncguru, Bravo!  :)

Edit: & re offering a BTC cash alternative prize option after the draw, I don't have any problem with this - if it's what the winner wishes to choose then that's an extra benefit to him & if someone else had won it & choose to go with the mining contract then the OPs would honer that & help set it up for them if needed so np, same for any future BTC cash equivalents - they're a bonus that's all

So since you still have all the mining power available to you, how much will it cost me to have a stress test against my instance of ecoinpool that I set up? I only want an hour or 2 of lots of speed to see how well it works.

I'm working on a central config that would allow me to do this pretty easily (giga probably has a better setup in this respect)  But given the number of rigs I'd have to change over in my present setup it would be a lot of work if you needed a lot of hash power.  How many gh/s are you thinking?

I dunno, I just wanted to turn it up until either my virtual machine crashed or my internet connection went down. I wish p2k was back with some updates though.

"what would you do with your winnings"

another bonus for the winner in taking an instant BTC cash prize option instead of mining for a week is that it gave him the potential to sell those 300 odd coins (haven't checked prob 220 - 250 but same principle) @ > $5.10 then short 10:1 on Btca with the $ equivalent of 3,000 coins margin, buying back in today < $4.9 for a clear $600 profit on the short, so now holding $2,130 or 435 coins, one third more in just 1 day after the spreads say, so that even BTC bears may want to play

lotto != raffle
You're comparing two completely different things.

In case anyone was wondering, 50 BTC of the proceeds from this raffle went to ckolivas for his work in reengineering the networking portion of cgminer to make it work better with gpumax.

Thanks ckolivas!
