Post by: zolace on September 17, 2014, 08:46:19 AM
Why does the media bash tobacco smoking but promotes marijuana?

Is it because Tobacco kills a lot of people and  marijuana is perceived as being fairly harmless and its illegality as a tool used to harass and subjugate minorities?

There are always hidden agenda somewhere.

Legalizing Marijuana will harm tobacco industry and hurt state taxes.

We are seeing studies that show that marijuana causes schizophrenia, lowers IQ by up to 8 points, and causes lung cancer.

You see, people fight for the right to smoke marijuana weekly, not once a month or once a year. And weekly is enough to cause schizophrenia, lower IQ, and lead to lung cancer.

The media wants to turn us all into stupid robots. It's been quite a long time I do not take into consideration what those hypocrites say in their propaganda.

1. Schizophrenia - There needs to be more studies done, for now it's correlation not causation. Also marijuana with high levels of cannabinoids and low levels of THC show increased antipsychotic and neuroprotective properties. Not all plants are equal, some have high THC, others, like the strain Charlette's Web, are extremely low in THC and high in cannabinoids, which reduced the recurrence of seizures for Charlotte.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Charlotte's_Web_(cannabis)

2. Lowers IQ - The results of the study you're referring to are currently being challenged, the study did not prove causation, it showed correlation without regard to socioeconomic factors and involved only adolescent chronic users.

3. Lung cancer - I'd like to see one person who only smoked marijuana and developed lung cancer as a result. Aside from that, there are other ways to use marijuana, namely with a vaporizer which would not burn the plant, meaning zero carcinogens, or as edibles.

It's disingenuous to only list the possible negative effects and not list any correlated positive effects.

The media is very liberal.

Only the liberal factions of the media will promote weed (this is the majority of the media). The war on drugs is a conservative principle and liberals do not like this, so if weed is legalized then conservatives look bad.

Tobacco companies give a lot of money to the state governments due to settlements related to previous practices. These settlements allow for state and local governments to be bigger then they really should be, and to spend more money then they should be spending, both of which are liberal ideals. If tobacco companies start to look too good then they may be able to get these settlements overturned in court. Also tobacco causes cancer

This is quickest answer that overlooks most of the other angles.  Okay so you need to realize that there's a hidden word there: business.  It's not the media, its the media business.  Thier hidden agenda is to get more viewers so they can charge higher premiums for their ad slots.

Legalizing Marijuana will definitely increase state taxes if regulation is laxed slightly and marijuana is allowed to be sold in places like grocery stores and convenience stores.  By the states choosing to only use designated 'marijuana' stores they ARE losing tax dollars as current potheads will simply go to their dealer for business as usual.  No way I would pay 30 bucks for a gram when your local dealer can offer something as good as or better than for 5 bucks, I'm just sayin.

Also it IS NOT big tobacco - they are busting their ass to stay afloat as it is and they LOVE marijuana as many many different users will buy Swisher cigars to roll up marijuana with.  However, IT IS industries like big oil, big lumber, The cotton industry, and big pharma who stand to lose much more with a scaled hemp backed economy.

Depends how you use it really doesnt it. Some people use weed for in their food like a spice or as medicine in various ways.  Then we have all the different strains.

A stoner walks into an appliance store and asks the owner, "How much for that TV set in the window?" The owner looks at the TV set, then looks at the stoner, and says, "I don't sell stuff to potheads." So the stoner tells the owner that he'll quit smoking pot and will come back the next week to buy the TV. A week later, the stoner comes back and says, "I quit smoking pot. Now, how much for that TV set in the window?" And the store owner says, "I told you I don't sell to potheads!" So the stoner leaves again. He comes back a week later and says, "How much for that TV?" The owner says, "I'm not going to tell you again, I don't sell to potheads!" The giggling stoner looks back at the owner and says, "How can you tell I'm a pothead?" The owner looks back and says, "Because that's a microwave."
