Title: [CoinURL] All ways to monetize your content!
Post by: giantdragon on May 01, 2012, 02:28:48 PM
Hello!

I would like to announce my new service CoinURL.com where you can earn Bitcoins by shortening and publishing links.

Advertising scheme has changed to the standard one, like Google Ads and Facebook use.

Brief description how the service works.

1. The advertiser buys some number of impressions for chosen CPM price.
2. The publisher posts his shortened links to some place in the Internet.
3. When a user clicks the link, all ads participate in selection procedure. Ads with higher CPM have better chances to be shown. So this advertiser will get faster completion of his campaign.
4. Clicks are being analyzed to detect cheating. Legitimate are paid, impressions from fake clicks are completely refunded to the advertiser.

Service already has enough functionality you need to start working with it and I am planning to add some extra features in the not distant future:
- geo and language targeting [made]
- filtering of ads that being shown for each link (adult content, politics, religion etc) [made]
- detailed reports for the advertisers [made]
- detailed stats for the link publishers [made]
- charts [made]
- Bulk API [made]
- Browser extensions [made]
- Privacy settings, possibility to permanently delete logs [made]
- Password protection of links [made]
- SSL encryption [made]
- Named links on subdomains: bit, go, in, jump, link, me, my, n, name, now, to [made]
- any other features that you will request...

You can see an example: cur.lv/1 (http://goo.gl/Ndlgb), link's stats are available using plus sign, e.g. cur.lv/1+ (http://goo.gl/HYtT2)

Currently you will receive 100% from funds paid by advertisers, no commission apply!
Join our affiliate program and receive 25% from the price of ads which were placed by user, registered with your referral link.

Short alias domain added: http://cur.lv (http://cur.lv)

P.S. I have tested the scripts before launching the website, but I need your help to test it deeper. If you have found a bug, please don't be angry and report it to me. Also I will be glad if you correct mistakes in the texts, because English is not my native language.

I can load the site using a proxy, but not without. What's the problem?

I don't think your website will be successful this way, 'cause it sucks when you have to register & remember a username for a small service like this.
I think it would be better, if you just make another field for the bitcoin address & it should be possible to use the same address for multiple links and adjust if you want to get paid weekly / monthly or just manually withdraw it... (→ http://anonymousads.com/ uses the bitcoin address to identify users)

Currently IP and cookies. Blacklist with known proxies and TOR nodes will be added today.

You can use your Bitcoin receiving address as username. When you login and create links, all of them are being attached to your account.

I don't think so.
People want to see statistics of their links, payments, withdrawals, etc...

Try using LastPass if you don't like to memorise things  :)

I don't think so.

You can still show them that information without using a login, like Eligius does:

http://eligius.st/~artefact2/7/1AkqxLJn8H6Cg5VAaYijzj7hQUSeM2LJ3r

Also, its a nice website but maybe you should use a different domain name, something shorter, also the coin part makes it obvious the person sharing the link is earning money from it and makes it seem a bit spammy (that's just my opinion though).

That's a public profile. Personaly, I don't like other people can see my stats.

Adf.ly does not uses any words about money making in it's username, but almost all users knows what it is! By the way, I don't force users to wait before following the links, therefore I think there will be no negative reaction as it is with adfly.

I agree with you. Also unified accounts create less load on the server.

This is a great service!

Anyway, as Blazr said, you should find a shorter domain :)

I am considering registering a domain in zone like .cc or .ly in the future.
BTW, is 10 chars domain really so long?

10 chars is pretty big for a URL shortening service (the idea is to shorten the url as much as possible). You could also get a 3 or 4 letter .in domain (instead of .cc or .ly) for under $10, less restrictions to register them too.

I guess one of the major use cases for these link shorteners is to share links on Twitter. So when you are restricted to 140 characters ever one counts.

Another feature request is API.
So twitter/forum plug-ins/mods will be able to make shorter address automatically :)

Suggest me good registrar who offer so low prices. And preferable with Bitcoin payments.

you need to press Skip Ad in the top right corner.

You should make the Skip Ad button bigger as well

Oh >.<
Not very user-friendly... I was expecting something like a bar at the top with the ad, not a full page ad. How on earth would a noob user (like me for example :D ) know what to do, instead of just closing the page altogether.

P.S. Thanks Blazr for the tip.

There are other service like this one, example: adf.ly
They are common used around the web ;)

Anyway, as Blazr suggested it just need some little changes.

@giantdragon
Will you also add a little timer like adf.ly has ? ( ex: 5 seconds )

It is bad idea! Many users are annoyed that they are forced to wait and associate adf.ly with a spam in their mind.

Ok, but do you think that it will be a bad idea to "add" a timer so that there will be both timer and button? They will be able to skip instantly if the want.
If you will add a timer, you should also add a "stop timer" button, so that the user is able to give a more deeper look to the advertised website. ( 10/15 seconds will be better than 5 if you like the idea of the "stop timer button" )

I don't understand, why the timer is need if it can be stopped and ad skipped? I see no difference with current "Skip ad" button I have already in the top frame.

There is no automatic redirect to the target URL. If a user is interested in viewing advertiser's page he can click link "Visit <advertiser's website name>" instead of "Skip ad".

Title: Re: CoinURL.com: shorten links and earn Bitcoins

I think that people don't like to "move the mouse and make additional clicks", this is the main reason for the timer.
They clicked a link to go somewhere, but they they will see another website where they aren't "probably" not interested.
The timer is a good thing to not force them to do addition clicks..

Wow. A big improvement.

You should also allow advertiser to pay per thousands impressions, rather than pay per day, and also pay publishers per thousand impressions too, its much easier to work with like that. With the current system, if I pay 1BTC how do I know how many views I'll get?

It is just alternative payment scheme for advertising, many services now use it (e.g. AnonymousAds, BitcoinAdvertisers). I this it is more fair than fixed CPM or CPC, and it is harder to cheat (less fake clicks).

Can you add something like automatic advertisement ?
I mean that if the user can set some rules so that if some bitcoins arrive at the deposit address then they will be used instantly for a pre-configured advertisement.

The best is if you can add more deposit addresses, example:
1) 17834h9685jy9d45t097845f78 : adv 1
2) 10v2m5893u2c892mv58w89vb : adv 2
3) 11498v20m589b3m89540489v : nothing

This will make possible to connect more services with your coinurl, and make them all working without touching anything :)
Some services will make bitcoin and advertise themselves on coinurl :D

Watching many thousands of addresses simultaneously at this moment is not possible (while I am using notification service like BitPing or Bitcoinmonitor). In future if my service will grow and I will be able to afford a dedicated server, this feature can be enabled.

As alternative solution I would suggest delayed ads (add a field to specify date/time of advertising start in the "New advertisement" form). Another variant - API interface, which allows activating your ad with GET query.

These stats available:

for each link (an example (http://coinurl.com/1+));
for each advertisement (an example (http://coinurl.com/stats-ad.php?id=18)).

Are you also able to make something like a dynamic page ( because Bitcoin value is quiet dynamic :P ) where you compare the earning of your service with others like adf.ly ?
I mean, with Bitcoin you cut all the paypal/cc fees, so I think that you should be able to give more than them.

I think better would be to allow the users to choose currency apart Bitcoins in which they want to see their earnings (i.e. auto conversion to USD using MtGox rate). This will attract even more users who don't actively use Bitcoin.

Bitcoins deposited for advertising cannot be refunded. This was clearly stated in FAQ, ToS and "Withdraw" section!
You can withdraw only funds that you have earned.

You can only withdraw funds that you have earned. Funds that were deposited can be spent exclusively on advertising. This measure is need to protect our service against money laundering, which is required by the law.

I realize this, but the coins have not been claimed yet, and you could simply bounce the appropriate amount back to the same address, so that's the "money laundering" reason out of the way. I'd like to be a repeat customer, but if you do not allow me to withdraw my current balance, I will have put an ad in for someone else at a discounted rate to forcibly get rid of my remaining balance, and cut all ties with your service. I'd like to be able to withdraw my remaining balance. Please make this possible.
Bitcoins deposited for advertising cannot be refunded. This was clearly stated in FAQ, ToS and "Withdraw" section!
I don't think neither of us want that.
Sorry, but I cannot make any exceptions. If I would allow this for you, other users could demand the same.

My personal advice for you: never ask exceptions in public places!

After a private discussion with giantdragon, and some interesting quotes,
it is like when you buy loaf of bread in the grocery store you cannot claim a refund ;)
I've been forced against my will to spend my remaining balance on purchasing more advertisements.
This is hidden under an unethical and immoral clause:
Quote
Funds that were deposited can be spent exclusively on advertising. This measure is need to protect our service against money laundering, which is required by the law.
There is no law pertaining to regulation of bitcoin money laundering. AML is serious business, but does not apply to Bitcoin. As such, this is clearly an attempt at hiding giantdragon's cheap tactic to increase profits behind some inexistant "law".

I'm baffled, and hope that this does not go unnoticed by the community.

Edit: It should be noted that I'm a paying customer, and will continue to be for the duration of my advertisement. This is not how you treat customers.

I don't try to hide this condition. It is definitely stated in FAQ and profile page!

mcorlett, it is common business practice to don't allow refunds for money, paid for services. For example, mobile phone operators in Latvia do the same.

I agree, it is unethical to hide it somewhere in the middle of ToS. But I don't understand your concern - when you made a deposit you were warned that these funds must be spent exclusively on the ads and cannot be withdrawn. You agreed and made deposit, but now ask a refund... What a stupid logic!

Oh, I'm not asking for a refund for the ad I placed via your service. That deal has been sealed. What I'm asking for is the ability to withdraw the remainder of my balance on your site, the part I didn't spend on advertising. You're denying me that ability.

I'm sorry if you misunderstood me. Sadly, I don't think you did.

But I don't understand your concern - when you made a deposit you were warned that these funds must be spent exclusively on the ads and cannot be withdrawn. You agreed and made deposit, but now ask a refund... What a stupid logic!
It does not say anywhere on the deposit page:
Quote
To make a deposit, send Bitcoins to the following address:
[address]
There is no minimum amount you need to send. Funds will be credited instantly without waiting any confirmations.

In any case, do you have a valid reason for not allowing withdrawals, since I've already disproved your "money laundering" façade?

I did not know this at the time of deposit. It's funny how you just stated that hiding it in ToS jargon was unethical, but are now finding it "honest".

Please address the other questions and concerns in my previous post as well.

I said it is unethical to state it in hidden form, e.g.
Quote

But I still cannot understand what is unclear in the following statement:
Quote
Can I get back funds that were deposited?
You can only withdraw funds that you have earned. Funds that were deposited can be spent exclusively on advertising. This measure is need to protect our service against money laundering, which is required by the law.

Oh, so it's hidden behind the very legally binding FAQ, as mentioned in the Terms of Service - nice!

I'll ask again: now that we've dismantled the money laundering reason, why are you refusing to allow withdrawals?

If you do not act on this, I may very well have to involve the board administration. You are holding my funds hostage.

Chrome extension available! After installation you will get an element in the context menu, just select link you want to shorten and click "Shorten URL and copy to clipboard". Shortened link will be copied to the clipboard.

Don't forget to set your unique UUID in the extension's options. You can find it in the profile.

This version of extension is in the beta stage, I am planning to upload it to the Chrome Store after some testing.
Right now you can download sources (https://bitcointalk.org/annoyance.php) and install it from Tools -> Extensions -> Load unpacked extensions.

Bug reports and suggestions are welcome!

This is completely made up by you to mask your aforementioned cheap tactics of forcing customers to spend money on your site. You have far too little activity to support money laundering; the odds of getting the same output you sent make this a money launderer's nightmare.

Yesterday we got a bunch of suspicious clicks, that with 99% probability came from cheaters.
To prevent dilution of fair clicks' share, the stats are being reviewed every day and clicks that considered to come from suspicious sources are removed from the database.

If one user clicks five of my (unique) links within an hour, do I get one click on each ad, or only one click on the first ad?

Thanks,

When the user clicks on a short link, target URL being analyzed and advertisement are choosen based on the place, where points this link. For example, if you are advertising a video service, you can specify "youtube.com" in URL targeting and the users, who click links, pointing to YouTube, will see your ad.

Auto redirect timer now optional and can be enabled/disabled in the profile settings.

When a user clicks on your link, a timer can be turned on and after 15 seconds he will be automatically redirected to the destination website. Enabling auto redirect can provide more convenience for your links visitors, but decrease users' attention to the ads.

Advertisers can choose to don't show their ads on links with auto redirect.

Can you make the "Auto redirect" option for every single links?
Now it's on/off for everyone without distinction.

Another thing is that if the "auto redirect" is disabled, the user can't see the count-down.
The count-down is an usefull thing becuase it get the attemption of the user that find that he can skip/go to the final link.
Now it can happen that the user open the link but it doesn't see / or look at the upper bar, that he think that he clicked the wrong link.

So can you make the "skip ad" button little flashing/juming/moving/... when the user has disabled the "count-down" ?

It seems that there are some websites ( or just one ) that block the redirect.
Example:
ads

Can you find a way to auto-check these problems?

Title: Re: CoinURL: shorten links and earn Bitcoins

Some advertisers try to fraudulently boost number of visitors by embedding script that forces redirect to their page.

Unfortunately it is impossible to automatically detect these scripts. But malicious ads are being immediately removed, right after I receive a complaint, without refunds to the advertisers. I think this measure will destroy any incentive to annoy users.

Browser extensions updated. Added SSL encryption, as well as possibility to set default password for protection series of the links.

Chrome extension: https://coinurl.com/download/coinurl_chrome.crx

Firefox add-on will be auto updated after Mozilla review, which takes about 3 days. If you don't want to wait, update manually right now:

You can control what they do. It's a matter of forcing it.
Is it easy? no
They get more ingenious with every turn. However you do ultimately have just as much control as they do.

One method that usually works.
http://stackoverflow.com/questions/1794974/using-js-how-can-i-stop-child-iframes-from-redirecting-or-at-least-prompt-users

Html5 has also introduced sandboxing
http://stackoverflow.com/questions/369498/how-to-prevent-iframe-from-redirecting-top-level-window

It's adoption however is not yet fully supported in all browsers. So sandboxing your iframe will have it's drawbacks until it does.

So I'd like to just say, It's not really true to say, "Unfortunately it is impossible to automatically detect these scripts."
If you'd some help in making this less of an issue, I'm sure I can find you a solution, but their is enough freely available advice and code out there.

From a webdev standpoint, it's very tempting to only support Chrome, but it's most profitable to spend countless frustrated hours trying to get IE up to 2005 levels.
From an ideological standpoint, I'd only use HTML5 and CSS3, then wait for everyone to support the goddamn international standards.
From an end-user standpoint, I use Chrome (over FF) because I'd rather have more HTML5 support and forego random stuff like APNG.
I'd switch to maxathon if it was faster and I liked its UI better

Yes, it is true. But it is only one way how to automatically prevent malicious ads. While this feature is not supported in all browsers, I will continue to manually monitor ads for presence of the forced redirect scripts.

Upload web pages containing links which you want to shorten. You can upload a single file with HTML code (.html, .htm, .php etc) or bundle many files in the archive (only .zip format supported). Archive can contain folders, as well as binary files (e.g. images). Only "href" attribute will be affected.
We strongly respect your privacy and will never disclose any files that you have uploaded. These files will be securely deleted not later than 24 hours since processing.

This feature is in the beta stage, if you have found a bug, please tell me.

Batch shortener now supports automatic relative URL transformation to absolute, using specified base domain.

For example, if you have links like href="index.php" and website's domain is "sample-site.com", you can automatically convert links to "http://sample-site.com/index.php".

Want to save your time? Just place JavaScript code on each website's page and all links it contains will start to generate income for you!

Below is an example. Version with personal ID and more detailed description is here: https://coinurl.com/profile-dynamic.php (https://coinurl.com/profile-dynamic.php).

Code:
<script type="text/javascript">
$(function() {
    var include = Array();
    //Leave empty to convert all links on the page or specify keywords
    //which URL must contain to be processed

    var exclude = Array();
    //Specify keywords which URL must not contain to be processed

    var id = "a274a7610f6856432fb1e9a707de2645"; //Change to personal from https://coinurl.com/profile-dynamic.php
    var redirect = "http://coinurl.com/redirect.php?id=" + id + "&url=";
    var links = $("a[href^='http']");

    for(var i = 0; i < links.length; i++) {
        var url = $(links[i]).attr("href");

        var deny = false;
        for(var j = 0; j < exclude.length; j++) {
            if(url.indexOf(exclude[j]) != -1) {
                deny = true;
                break;
            }
        }
        if(deny) {
            continue;
        }

        if(include.length > 0) {
            var allow = false;
            for(var j = 0; j < include.length; j++) {
                if(url.indexOf(include[j]) != -1) {
                    allow = true;
                    break;
                }
            }
            if(!allow) {
                continue;
            }
        }

        $(links[i]).attr("href",  redirect + encodeURIComponent(url));
    }
});
</script>

Many new tools now available for the advertisers! The ad selection algorithm completely rewriten from scratch!

You can choose devices on which you want to show your ad (desktop and laptop computers, smartphones, tablets).

Frequency capping lets you to set maximum number of times an ad can be shown to the same person per 24 hours.

Also you can specify keywords to target your ad to the people, who visit relevant websites. Both referrer and destination URL will be matched. Keywords now being matched in the case-insensitive full text search mode, e.g. it is enough to specify "youtube" to target all YouTube links. Keywords also can be used to exclude audience who visit websites, that are not relevant for your ad (e.g. porn, pirated downloads).

Meanwhile, Firefox extension (https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/coinurl/) was too updated!

P.S. As I know, currently CoinURL is only one Bitcoin advertising platform that offers contextual ads.

I have used this service since its start, not as a publisher but as an advertiser for my websites.
I recall the first ad was for my own URL shortening service (w/out ads), and it was even a bit aggressive ("tired of waiting for redirection? my shortener has no ads"); recently I have taken a more passive approach since I figured out CoinURL isn't exactly in the same market/user base as my URL shortener - no need to get more enemies ;)
More recently, I also bought ads for another website of my own, with positive results - even though the ad I posted for it accidentally broke the iframe of the redirection page, support contacted me in a few hours and I had the problem solved in a couple more. CoinURL also implemented the feature I suggested in the emails we exchanged, the one of ad preview (exactly to prevent broken iframes).

As an advertiser, I'm quite satisfied with this service and its support system (fast reply, no annoying ticket system, and even accept users' suggestions), even though as an link-clicking user I really hate services like CoinURL, making me wait to browse to the links I clicked.

It is called frequency capping (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Frequency_capping). I have already introduced this feature few days ago.

Maybe I have incorrectly understood what did you mean and in fact you are asking about limiting overall number of impressions per day, not views by the same user. If yes, you just don't understand how are auction-based ads working! Completion speed (number of impressions per day) depends from CPM bid, therefore to get less impressions just pay cheaper price!  ;D

I do understand how are auction-based ads work.

The problem is when all other ads expire.
Yesterday I got 28.7k impressions (87% of total impressions). This way my ads will expire all in the same day, and I don't want this.
It would be nice if we could edit active ads.

You must blame link publishers who force you to wait! In CoinURL, unlike AdFly, any publisher can set maximum wait time applicable for their links, depending on how does his audience tolerate forced wait time.

Quote from: CoinAd
Yesterday I got 28.7k impressions (87% of total impressions).
Someone have started to use auto shortening feature on his highly visited site, so average number of clicks per day skyrocketed by 10 times. Even I haven't expected such big instant growth! It proves that using my auto shortening script is the same easy like putting banner ads.

Ad editing and budget management now available!

Go to the "My ads" page and open context menu:

http://coinurl.com/banners/edit.png

P.S. Few days ago someone with heavy traffic website installed our auto shortening script and boosted number of clicks to more than 30k per day. This traffic is absolutely legitimate and has very high quality (visitors mostly from U.S. and western Europe). Many advertisers were not ready for this significant increase of the traffic and their remaining impressions depleted, so advertising cost dropped to the ridiculously low value ~0.045 BTC per mille.

Don't miss your opportunity while eyes of these visitors are so damn cheap!

On advertisement's stats page you can estimate performance of the ad: expected number of impressions per day and campaign's completion time. Use this data to adjust CPM bid and achieve the best cost/speed ratio! See an example (https://coinurl.com/stats-ad.php?id=217).

The orange, changed image looks better on the website. Even though it looks fine now, take care not to abuse of the orange color if you ever make more changes to the layout. Too much orange is one of the problems I find on some websites with the United theme.

I want to share my experience with coinurl.
This platform is a good idea and technically excellent and constantly growing with many useful features to publishers, but lately I'm having some problems with ads revenue, initially in the first two week of service the gains were proportional, probably over my dreams, over the past several days/weeks i have problems with unexplained rejected states (to test some of them i've asked some friends in usa and canada to test for me outside europe with default beaviour, browser no ad block, no proxy, accepting cockies, js enabled, ecc, but rejected ?) and unexplained changing values, i tried to contact their support (btw, really quick, and comprensive response) and some things have been clarified, but others unfortunately not, i'm an honest publisher, never try to scam 1 click, but i know what i'm doing, and don't want to wast my time or work free for others, and i think that if things and not clarified and still remain unexplained i will return to a platform more transparent and respectful of its publisher.

For all time you have 1794 clicks registered, 115 were rejected.

As I said before, server-side script automatically checks if the visitor's browser have sent acknowledgement about successful advertisement load in the frame. It may be many reasons why query relating this acknowledgement was not executed, e.g. client closed browser too quickly, my hoster's DB server was down at this time, firewall blocked it or many other that I even cannot know.

But your rejection rate is only 6.8%, I don't understand why to worry! Also I think having negligible share of false-positives is much better than disabling fraud detection script at all and lose all advertisers, because nobody will pay to show their ads to the bots!

Can you not delete ads when they're out of funds?
It's very boring to create the same ad all over again and wait for review.
This bug fixed now. For all subsequent ads (including currently active) you will be able to refill a finished ad without waiting repeat review!

Visualization of the impressions stats was added. You can view your ad's performance for last hour, day, month(s). Also, with mouse hover on points, you can compare average CPM bids which were set at these periods to select most appropriate price/performance ratio.

I have received many requests asking to providing more transparency about rejected clicks. Link publishers now can see info about a user, who made a click (hostname, referrer, operating system, browser, language). Additionally, information about ad status (if an ad was successfully shown or not) and target link visit (i.e. if "Skip ad" button was shown) available.

An example:

http://coinurl.com/img/visitor.png

Information about users who viewed an ad also available to the advertisers in the "Impression details" page.

What if an user that clicks on a CoinURL short link is not comfortable with his information being available to the link publisher? Do you comply with any do-not-track standards (i.e. the browser plugins that indicate websites user prefers not to be tracked)?

I do not hand over any data (i.e. IP-address) that can be used to identify person who clicked a link. Info which I have started to provide to the link publishers just gives them more details to understand why some clicks were rejected.

The hostname is directly resolvable to the IP address.

Code:
[milton:~]$ host pc-247-27-44-190.cm.vtr.net

Title: Re: CoinURL: shorten links and earn Bitcoins

Do you mean that the user must register before clicking the link to disable the flag?
I think that none want to give personal information ( like IP address / hostname ) to anyone else.

Anyway, can you also add an option to give the advertiser the ability to enable some clicks coming from Tor network if the have some kind of ref?

Example:
I'm an advertiser, I see that clicks coming from sdfhdojghidcohiuehc.onion seems true ( its' a not existent address, it's just random chars ), so I want to enable coinurl to count these kind of clicks instead of nulling them.

you can also add an option to enable clicks coming from any Tor node, it's a choice of the advertiser.

It is browser-wide option, not concrete service's. The user just says to anyone that he don't want to be tracked.

It is browser-wide option, not concrete service's. The user just says to anyone that he don't want to be tracked.

Not all browsers support that option, and if I recall correctly such things first appeared as browser plugins. And yes, it's the client that specifies, by sending some sort of flag to the server, that it doesn't want to be tracked. I don't know if there's some sort of official standard for it. It's up to the server to respect the flag or not, but I think it's more polite to respect it whenever possible, so it's great you're adding support for it :)

Some more notes: links which have too many "do not track" clicks can be marked as suspicious, and advertisers can choose not to show their ad to people who don't want to be tracked (even because no-tracking may not comply with the privacy police of their website or ad page).

This flag can be easily obtained with following code (tested with Firefox and Chrome "Do Not Track Plus" extension):

Code:
function doNotTrack()
{
if(isset($_SERVER['HTTP_DNT']) && ($_SERVER['HTTP_DNT'] == 1))
return true;
else
return false;
}

I have enabled "Do Not Track" feature and started to respect also link visitors' privacy. If visitor's browser has this flag enabled, publishers and advertisers will see a message like:

http://coinurl.com/img/track_disabled.png

Otherwise, IP and hostname will be available to them.

Some more notes: links which have too many "do not track" clicks can be marked as suspicious, and advertisers can choose not to show their ad to people who don't want to be tracked (even because no-tracking may not comply with the privacy police of their website or ad page).

I think it is obvious that "Do Not Track" flag will be used as one of the parameters in fraud detection script.

Anyway, can you also add an option to give the advertiser the ability to enable some clicks coming from Tor network if the have some kind of ref?

A whitelist for TOR hidden websites enabled. If you have a .onion site where want to place CoinURL links, write me its address and if it is legitimate I will add an exception.

I have noticed that many advertisers incorrectly use targeting by referring and short link destination URL. May be phrase "Keywords" is confusing or not all users have read help before posting an ad and mistakenly suppose that this means natural language keywords like "automobiles" and "houses", which web page must contain to be matched. Unfortunately, currently I don't have enough computational power to cache contents of the websites, on which links are pointing the same way as Google AdSense does.

In fact, as said in help, keywords are tokens which are being matched against referring and destination URL, not contents of the websites they are pointing. For example, if you have specified keyword "bitcoin", it will be matched against URLs like http://dailybitcoins.org, http://bitcointalk.org, http://bitcoinplaza.blogspot.com etc (i.e. keyword must enter exactly into URL as substring to be matched).

To make this feature less ambiguous I have renamed "keywords" to "URL tokens". If you already have placed an ad with incorrect targeting  settings, please correct it.

If you access http://tny.im , you'll see the color of the CoinURL ad title is blue, however, on the profile for that slot, I set it to orange to go with all the other link colors. The colors I set don't match the ones that appear :(

You have entered invalid color: "97310" (5 characters, while HTML notation requires 3 or 6 chars).

The ad preview showed up right, that's why I didn't even bother checking for typos. Now I wonder from where did I take the 97310 value...

Perhaps you could make the system check for errors in order to make these mistakes less frequent?

EDIT: It seems to be fixed now, thanks. I also noticed it trims the input to six chars, while it should allow for a leading # plus six chars (most HTML editors and page inspectors show the color codes this way), making 7 chars total. Some kind of JavaScript form validation shouldn't be too hard to implement along with the ad preview... ;)

Warning: mysqli::mysqli() [mysqli.mysqli]: (42000/1226): User 'bitlatsl_coinurl' has exceeded the 'max_user_connections' resource

Do you know what could be the cause?
Glad to see you have chosen CoinURL as advertising network for the Rugatu.

This error (exceeding limit of the maximum simultaneous connections to the MySQL database) happen if web hosting's server is just overloaded or experiencing performance drop due to some problem. Usually it happens during very short time interval, so you have no reason to worry. If it persists for longer time, notify me and I will call hosting's tech support.

Its been persisting for few days already - do you plan to upgrade? (sorry but 20 concurrent connections is laughable)
Also you'd be better replacing this error with custom message - our users now think that its our problem, so we'll look forward to replace your system by other better functioning.

This limit set by hoster.

I never expected so rapid grow. About for 2 months we had about 500k daily impressions, but yesterday it increased to 1.7 million.
We will consider hosting upgrade.

I see... today 500k imp from hackcf.biz ... really quality site...
Nevermind, I'll stick to what is working (adsense) till you fix it.

What is currently your share of ads? Are you able to fund proper hosting with it?

For a long time (since CoinURL launch to this day) relatively cheap virtual hosting was enough to handle load. I have paid out 100% of the advertisers' funds, but when I will move to the more powerful server I have no other choice than start charging some fee.

P.S. Have you any suggestions for affordable VPS?

UPD1: I have called my hosting company and they agreed to increase max connections to the database 5 fold right now, so you must not see annoying MySQL error anymore.

UPD1: We have updated stats for the advertisers. Now you can see number of both counted (for which you pay) and raw (including rejected) clicks and impressions.

There is no reason not to charge advertisers. So lets move to more professional platform by taking a share as commission from each click.
I'm sure that we publishers want stable platform and are able to share our revenue with middleman/you which maintains the ad feed (adsense charges at least 40%)...

Also, since you offer affiliate program I'd like to see "coinurl.com" link in the corner of each ad to bear affiliate link of each publisher.

I decided to try donation funding model at first. But if it won't work, I will have no other choice than introducing a commission fee.
BTW, charging fees while CoinURL is not so big is very undesirable move. Our average CPC now is low comparing to the Google AdSense and
other big networks, therefore reducing it by 30-40% can drive away publishers.

Also, since you offer affiliate program I'd like to see "coinurl.com" link in the corner of each ad to bear affiliate link of each publisher.
Just click "Request verification" in the ad slot's context menu and your referral link will appear on the "Ads by CoinURL" place.

Am I correctly understand, you are asking about unique impressions? If true, we collect only aggregate data about impressions for banner ads and slots with precision of one hour. Only banner clicks and interstitial ad impressions are tracked individually.

BTW, now we are receiving about 500-600k impressions per day and this number grow every day. If I would start inserting info about each impression into database (which require at least 4 fields to be uniquely tracked: ad_id, slot_id, client_ip and timestamp), it would produce
many gigabytes of data every day. In the future, if our profits will be enough to build own data center ::), this feature of course will be available!

I'm talking about unique impressions in the last 24 hours. (Unique visitors)
Instead of 1 hour precision it would be 24 hours.

Hi giantdragon, small question here, any idea why my visitors get this error when clicking on links converted automatically by coinurl script?

Fatal error: Call to undefined function dbmainconnect() in /home7/bitlatsl/public_html/coinurl.com/data/userinfo.php on line 130

The script is installed correctly, but they don't get to see the content when I enable it, only a blank page with this error. Thanks

Coinurl revenue sharing integrated with MyBB forum!
1) Add a Custom Profile Field, call it Bitcoin Address and remember its ID.
2) Download this plug-in http://community.mybb.com/thread-127455-post-923977.html#pid923977
3) Modify the ID ( from 1 ) in the plug-in code.
4) Install the plug-in

Header/footer:
Inserit the ads code with {$bcads}
Code:
<iframe scrolling="no" style="border: 0; width: 728px; height: 90px;" src="http://coinurl.com/get.php?id=xxxx{$bcads}"></iframe>

My Advertisements plug-in -> Postbit:
Use {$GLOBALS['bcads']} here instead of {$bcads}
Code:
<iframe scrolling="no" style="border: 0; width: 468px; height: 60px;" src="http://coinurl.com/get.php?id=xxxx{$GLOBALS['bcads']}"></iframe>

Then you are going to share the revenue with users that are making useful and interesting thread on your forum.

Example:
https://www.bitcoin-italia.org/forum/Thread-Ricatto-in-Bitcoin
Look at link in the ads and then look at my profile. ( I'm the creator of the thread )
My profile: https://www.bitcoin-italia.org/forum/User-HostFat
( there is the same btc address )

BitcoinCoffee.com, please contact me via e-mail before writing complaints in this thread, I will always try to help you!

CoinURL uses third-party payment notification service (bitcoinmonitor.net), so I cannot guarantee that it will have 100% uptime. Also my server might be down (or heavily overloaded) at the moment when notification request was made, so you deposit was not automatically credited. In this case just contact me and I will add funds manually as fast as I can.

Your paid 1.3 BTC was credited now!

Is there a way to set a "referred by" after the account was created?
1. It is not possible in any way! SQL statement "DELETE", executed on the users table, will break foreign key integrity and corrupt database. I can only disable accounts (i.e. make impossible to login).
2. It is possible to set referrer field empty, but not to set arbitrary user as your referrer (due to high risk of abuse).

You see only this concrete ad because advertiser have chosen some keywords present on your site or selected your site to advertise exclusively. Don't worry, CPC of targeted ads guaranteedly will be higher than network-wide.

CoinURL - Highly recommended, had a few ups and downs with the service however its great value.

Compared to google adwords - Well, instead of paying $1 per click, im paying only 0.02 per click now with coinurl and im getting clients who are related to bitcoin.

( Huge returns from advertising )

The service has been outstanding and has had its development faults which is to expected for a web service thats still building its feature set.

Ive also used the publishing side of CoinURL, excellent pay results with the autoshorten feature. Great site to make money from your site if your running a website related to bitcoins.

I cannot see how anyone would assume there is non-bitcoin related sites, because this is an anonymous bitcoin advertising and publishing service. So logically only bitcoin related sites are advertised and published.

AA - Publishing ( Pay rates could be a bit higher )
AAA++ - Advertising

I don't impose restrictions on the sites advertised, non-Bitcoin advertisers also welcome!

When I will start accepting other deposit options apart Bitcoin, there will be much more different advertisers. But this is not easy from many points: technology (most likely number of publishers will increase so high that only physical dedicated server will be able to handle load), legal and personal (I have little free time for next few months).

You need to open the gates a little more on your profits...

E.g a service tax for servers on all incoming funds. I know it would annoy users but ultimately it keeps the service stable.

Realistically you should be able to make an easy 100USD a month and just put the site onto a cloud VPS? Saves a lot of hassle.

Charging fees from incoming payments (i.e. deposits made by advertisers) is very bad idea. Advertisers, not publishers create income stream for the CoinURL and if they feel any inconvenience, it could have negative impact on the revenue.
Currently I am trying to get enough income by forcing publishers, who withdraw funds, to donate some share to the service.

Realistically you should be able to make an easy 100USD a month and just put the site onto a cloud VPS? Saves a lot of hassle.
Right now CoinURL is located on the virtual server with dynamic resources (total 16 CPU cores and 12 GB RAM) for about $20/month. If there is little load on the hosting's server from other customers, CoinURL shows excellent performance. But in some days (absolutely randomly, occurs about 1 time per few weeks) overall load on the server becomes extremely high and hosting's administrator imposes temporarily limits for me (he told that other hosting's customers complain for the poor performance and they have no other choice that limit resources for me, because CoinURL is the most resource-consuming site they host). In this case you see this annoying "max_user_connections" error.

I tried to measure performance on the dedicated XEN VPS with single core 2.4 GHz and 1 GB RAM. Result: very far from enough!

If I would start accepting non-Bitcoin users, I expect growth for tens of times in short time, server resource consumption most likely will rise so dramatically that $10-20k mainframe will be required.

You have the same problem I had on CoinAd with the 'remember me' thing.

www.coinurl.com != coinurl.com

The browser detects www. as a different website, so cookies created in coinurl.com are not available at www.coinurl.com.
You need to redirect users from www.coinurl.com to coinurl.com or vice-versa (you can either do that on your server settings or with php header).

I think the same thing happens with $_SESSIONS.

For 1k impressions most probably you will have value very close to the average, i.e. about 0.027 BTC.

Author wrote a post about CoinURL in his blog without fully understanding how CoinURL work. My comments about it:

1. On the first image you hide status of the impression. Impressions made by automatic tools (bots) are being rejected and you have not to pay for them.
2. If you don't want to receive traffic from some publishers which you are considering to be junk, block them in the Targeting options.

BTW, just few hours ago I called hosting's admin and he suggested the same (memcached) ;)
So I will try to enable it for CoinURL scripts.

Unfortunately I have no root access to the hosting's server and support don't work at weekends, therefore I could be able to deploy changes only on beginning of next week.

Got it, until then you probably need to optimize the platform's code to properly use caching. Here (http://www.php.net/manual/en/book.memcache.php) is the best guide I found. I remind you that if you're code isn't optimized memcached would do very little or not work at all, but if you do it you could gain between 65-70% in server's performance. Keep us updated  ::)

paraipan, as I said later, I am unable to setup memcached right now because have no root access to the server and hosting support don't work at weekends.

P.S. Problems you see rather frequently are caused by hosting's server overload triggered by all it's customers. In the "rush hours" (occurs regularly few times a week) total query flow on all sites (not only CoinURL, but hundreds others which physically reside on this server) becomes so high, that even simple pages without many queries (like Daily Bitcoins, which located on the same hosting) load very slow.

Memcached may help, but I don't think much. The main problem is that shared hosting for large services like CoinURL are unsuitable, but profit is very far from enough to buy decent dedicated server.

Why don't you try to make some profit by taking fees somewhere between the advertiser and the affiliate, and buy a dedicated/virtual server for your websites? I know reducing other people's profit is not the perfect solution, but I can't think of any one better though.

I am already charging 25% "compulsory donation" from all withdrawals, but Bitcoin ads market is so tiny that without an investor I would be able to buy even small dedicated server (~$3k) not earlier that after a year.

I said if I would have enough funds and market capacity to recoup expenditures I would buy a physical server.
Renting a VPS with guaranteed resources is bad idea for resource-consuming service, IMHO. I tried 2.4GHZ/1GB RAM XEN VPS, but it is not enough (works even slower than average non-peak time on the current shared hosting). Renting a server with resources I need would cost $100-200 per month, which is equivalent 1.5 years to fully payoff it.

You must have trust issues and it is understandable.

But I'm not a anonymous entity, never ment to be.
No personal, I just don't want to locate server in the USA!

Good news!

I have added Memcached to the CoinURL scripts and tested on the affordable XEN VPS node I have in the reserve.
To my luck, this node can handle 10 times (or even more) higher load that CoinURL has now. Ad loading time is acceptable.

Next week I will try to move CoinURL on the this node, so I hope you will never see annoying "max user connections" errors anymore!

Another temporary solution for publishers who use SSL banner calls - add "&ssl=1" to the request code, e.g.

In this case old script without Memcached will be used.

Not at all, the real cache purpose is to lower the load on the DB and vps's CPU many times per second so you could actually lower the caching to 30 seconds if needed and you will not suffer any service issues. Actually having the cache setting under a minute is recommended so other functions of the website don't start getting affected, like user login or stats.

Load generated by frontend (registration, login, stats etc) is not significant, so I don't use Memcache at all for it.

Only ads list is being cached. Matching targeting options each time, when an ad is shown, is very resource-consuming operation. Therefore I store this list in the cache and retrieve when the same user opens a page with CoinURL ad slot again. Ads are not updated so frequently, therefore 10 minutes interval must be acceptable, IMHO.

Not all clicks are counted. Of course false positives always exist, even some legitimate clicks sometimes may be rejected.
Send more details on our e-mail, I will tell you why clicks were not counted.

I have a question.. is your process for validating clicks just really slow, or are a ton of clicks just rejected? My expected earnings have passed 0.5 BTC several days ago and are now over 0.6, however I have only ever actually received around 0.13 all together. It would be nice if it showed you how many clicks have been validated VS how many were rejected, so that publishers arn't just left in the dark.

Column "expected earnings" you see on the "My ad slots" page was calculated according to our previous system, which had been replaced to
the more advanced few months ago, so these numbers are incorrect. To remove uncertainty I have deleted this field. Your real earnings are being displayed on the "Transactions" page.

random suggestion: you should turn PHP error reporting off.. there has been several times that I have come to the site or tried to go to my profile where I was just given a blank page with PHP errors showing file paths and what lines of code the page failed on.. IMHO probably not a very good idea from a security standpoint, and PHP errors can show important database information as well. Just sayin

Error reporting helps me to understand what happens with the server (with this crappy cheap hosting it happens rather frequently). All scripts have protection against SQL injections, so I don't think it is a problem. CoinURL got many hacking attempts, all of them failed.

Apart from the downtime, lately I'm getting a lot of "Server overloaded. Please come back later!" messages shown on the ad slots on my website.
I don't know if this message is served by your scripts (i.e. you can change it) or by the hosting provider.
If you have the power to change it, would you please take off the "Please come back later!" part for when the problem is with ad slots? Because visitors of my website (specially first-time visitors) may think the problem is with my server and that they should come back later to my website, when it is operating properly and the overload is just in the ad slot, a problem that is actually out of my control.

It is my message. Now it returns just free page.

UPD. Redirect via short links restored!

it appears your hosting is having some issues? Are you in need of some cloud hosting?

Any ETA available on restoration?

Regards,
Logan

Any ETA available on restoration?
Hosting's admin said it would re-enable MySQL server for my account tomorrow (but with limited resources - he admitted in overselling and said he cannot give me full performance because other users complains).
I have exams soon, so I cannot spent much time on configuring the server within next 2 days.

I think we may need to sort something out for you cloud hosting wise, You cannot leave your site offline for longer than 12 days.

Feel free to PM me, happy to help out...

As I said before, hosting's admin promised to restore operation tomorrow. I really don't have free time now to configure new server...
