Title: So I was checking my referral logs ...
Post by: weex on May 08, 2012, 08:42:32 AM
and found this thread where someone was introducing BTC to camgirls.

http://www.ambercutie.com/forums/viewtopic.php?f=15&t=7955

It went well for a while...which then led to this more epic thread where things didn't go quite as well...

http://www.stripperweb.com/forum/showthread.php?173251-Have-you-heard-of-this-new-currency-and-way-of-getting-paid-called-Bitcoins

Didn't have time to read it all but wanted to post it here since it may help people either a) chill on the evangelizing or b) to do it with a bit more tact.

I'm not affiliated with any of the posters in either thread.

it's scary how often they mention the word 'trust' while at the same time advocating the use of paypal.

I noticed the word "trust" being mentioned a lot in all bank advertisements. Too bad i prefer the "trust no one" philosophy

"they are adult friendly"  :D Implying bitcoin is alive and managed by someone

Anyway, interesting links

Fucking evangelists, that can't properly approach skeptics and noobs. Just STOP and let someone else that knows what they are doing do the dirty work. Those threads started by people with an agenda cause more people to spread bad things against bitcoin, and less to actually research any major amount and get converted and useful.

You have now successfully turned whole forums against bitcoin, for your failure to properly discuss bitcoin. Proper discussion includes but is not limited to abiding by the rules of the forums in which you are posting, such as that you must be a female in order to post, no spam or ads, or whatever.

Couldn’t agree more, rjk.

How about you people STFU besides telling friends/relatives who trust you the story and let Bitcoin either survive or die on its own merits and incentives? No need to push shit.

I think that all publicity/evangelising is good. The smart ones will always figure it out and start to use it.

You see, there is a clear market there. All bitcoin nerds are guys. They have the money, and they need something to fap to. Bitcoin removes the middleman here, these girls can just start hosting webcam shows anywhere and ask for tips for bitcoins.

Maybe, maybe not. Did you read those threads? At best, it was gross misrepresentation ("no fees at all", etc), and in the end the guy got banned after causing pages and pages of badmouthing due to his horrible PR efforts.

Like I said - abide by other forums' rules!

I think the best thing to do is to spend a little bit of time on the forums and find out who the respected posters are.  Especially in the case of a girls-only posting site.  Most often, those highly-respected posters will respond positively to rational and non-spammy inquiries, and they would probably be willing to look into it themselves and then promote it themselves.

You don't always win, since you can't always convince these strangers that what you're proposing is legitimate.  But in this case just piquing their interest might be enough:  a direct person-to-person, semi-anonymous payment system makes sense for girls with webcams.  If it's a good match, at least one of the people you contact will look into it and decide to become the proponent for it.

It's a billion times better if a respected member of the community posts about it instead of a new member with one post.  I'd almost rather that Bitcoin not get mentioned at all than see it cast into such a poor light by trolling evangelists.

Just make yourself available to those members to help them understand it and make sure they're saying things that are factual and correct, and use references instead of just telling them.  In particular, I would reference the Reuter's Article (http://www.reuters.com/article/2012/04/02/us-traders-bitcoin-idUSBRE83108120120402) and the WeUseCoins (http://weusecoins.com/) websites, mainly because Reuters is respected and shows that this is a real, respectable phenomenon, and not [necessarily] a scam.  Weusecoins, probably gives a more-concise introduction to what it's about.  Both are much better voices to promote its legitimacy than some shady dude with 1 post on a girl's only forum...

Speaking of evangelism, has anyone gathered a collection of tips on how it should and shouldn't be done? That might be very useful. I did a quick search, but I couldn't find much more than "tell them how awesome it is and include a link to weusecoins".

Meh. I thought they sounded surprisingly reasonable. I've had much worse results in the past. Maybe it's a "girl thing" where even the scepticism is less aggressive?

You must only have read the first thread. The second is an abomination after about 2 pages.

This. Bitcoin reminds me a lot of RMS and free software except the motivations range from ethical to financial and the perceived threats to the reader are more serious if presented the wrong way. Since this will likely repeat itself 1000x, we need something like: http://www.gnu.org/philosophy/words-to-avoid.html

Only looked at the first thread and I´m surprised at how well many of them understod Bitcoin. Its not what I had expected from cam girls but its probably prejudice from my part.

To bad it went messed up.

Yes it would be good to have a comprehensive set of guidelines. I think in this case it was easy to see that there was an agenda (drive traffic to the guy's website, even if it wasn't taking a fee or anything), and that stood out like a sore thumb.

Unfortunately, someone that is trying to recruit users really needs to know a heck of a lot about every aspect of the ecosystem, which is one reason that I haven't been discussing it much. (Still learning...)
This is difficult because of the sheer volume of information that comprises a comprehensive knowledge of the system.

To be fair that on girl kitten instigated pretty much the whole thing whenever the question was answered it looked like she just asked it again lol

There seriously needs to be a simple link that people can attach, 10x shorter than Evorhees' article and aimed at busting the most popular uber-sceptic myths, one bullet point at a time.

Except it's really not a simple as, "Here, read this." If it were, there'd be no need.

That's a great page.  I hadn't seen it before.

Reading the other forum's topics made me sad.  These girls are fearful of Bitcoin for the exact reasons why it is awesome -- no government, no centralization, open source, virtually no trust.  :(

I reckon! It's like Bitcoin's got its own Wikipedia, but better. Excuse me while I fire my secretary.

He was talking about the page, not about the wiki...

That's a nice reference. I'll have to remember to post that in the threads where people post their emails, cause pretty much every one I have seen posted here is horrible and probably does more harm than good.

When talking to adult entertainers about Bitcoin, and they ask "how can I spend these things?",  please remember to mention they can pay their rent with Bitcoin (if they live in Vegas).

I mean, that's awesome, but they'd probably have to move right?

Not necessarily. I've hear that a lot of entertainers fly into Vegas like cattle on a train every Friday. Could be a way to pay for a more established or permanent place of stay. I unno... just sayin..

Ugh.  Since I took the time to read through most of those, I thought I'd post a tl;dr.

Whoever posted these threads is an idiot.  There's really just not any other way of putting it.  On the one forum, he (most likely a he) seems to have done a sloppy job of pretending to be female, before doing an absolutely horrible job of promoting his site and Bitcoins, not only confusing anyone who might have been interested but also wasting everyone's time trying to engage a few people who were obviously not interested, and were more than likely tied to competitor services.

I'll just make a little bullet list of what he did wrong, in semi-chronological order:

  • Lied
  • Exaggerated the benefits of Bitcoin
  • Used poor grammar/spelling
  • Failed to explain what Bitcoins are and how they work
  • Failed to differentiate his site/service from Bitcoin itself
  • Failed to highlight the pros and cons of his service
  • Posted too often / often making multiple posts in a row
  • Demonstrated limited understanding of the target market
  • Was overly defensive
  • Was sarcastic
  • Resorted to insults

And that was just the first thread.  The second seemed to be doing better, until people from the first thread showed up and things similarly went downhill.

On the bright side, however...
