Title: mining speed?
Post by: TradersEdgeDice on May 13, 2011, 01:42:36 AM
Been here a few days trying to get my bearings.

My machine is doing the whole generating thing with 0.3.21 at about 4500 khash/s.

Where does that put me on the spectrum of mining rigs?

Good, bad, indifferent?

Should I upgrade hardware or join a pool if I'm interested in doing this?

CPU mining will get you nowhere. You need a good ATI graphics card for mining. Check out https://en.bitcoin.it/wiki/Mining_hardware_comparison for a good list of what does what.

I looked into it a week ago and found the ATI 5850 to be the best value for me. Power consumption is relatively very low, and if you look hard, you can purchase good ones under $160 shipped.

Also take a look at http://bitcoinx.com/profit/index.php -- enter in your specs and investment to get a rough idea of your profit margins.

He's allowed to play the lottery, isn't he?!

CPU mining will generally award you a block every few years depending on your CPU.

In a few years however, that block could be worth a few million.

oh man! The truth hurts.  I thought my 8800 GTS would be decent.  No way. Check this out…

Generated blocks per time frame: 0.11 blocks
Generated coins per time frame: 5.25 BTC
Revenue per time frame: 34.98 USD
Revenue minus power costs: -293.75 USD
Hardware break even: never
Net profit first time frame: -1293.75 USD

Thank you so much for your quick response.

The 5880 looks good to me as well now that I know what I am looking for.  Maybe a dual 6990 setup :-).

It looks like NONE of the inVidia cards are suitable for mining.  So much for the quad SLI idea.

That said, my 8800 is supposed to produce 16000khash/s.

I guess that means I should be using a different application.  Any suggestions?

At this point, that is strictly to figure out the best configuration before buying something better.

@gigabytecoin: There's more money in a better setup plus the lottery precisely because of the idea that the amount of fiat will vastly exceed BTC. ) wish I'd done this two years ago.  Hopefully, there's still room for a miner.

Need to buy a new machine anyway.
