NewEgg's calc says over 600w but that doesn't seem right to me...

Roughly 400W, calculators are conservative. They don't want to be blamed for your CheapPower 10000W power supply going up in smoke running a 5770.

that is a wal-mart style product...  there is a reason it is soo cheap.

One of THE most important part of a mining rig is the PSU.  take some advice, buy a SeaSonic or similar power supply.

That's because Rosewill is owned by Newegg. Newegg makes their own product without having to buy from a vendor, which makes it a cheaper price. It's also on sale, which makes it even cheaper. I personally own one of these myself, and it's a solid and stable PSU. I don't think an extra $100~ is worth the 80 Gold, 3 extra years warranty, and name brand. Unless you have a lot of money to throw around, I wouldn't bother.

I wouldn't buy, say, a Dynex to power a mining rig (tried that, it would restart every couple of days), but anything better should do just fine.  Buying an overpriced PSU for mining is just buying insurance that you don't need.  JMO.  The important part is keeping it cool, as I learned when I killed a 750w Corsair with 3 5830's.

probably because the corsair is not rated to run at 100% of the 750w 24/7.  the SeaSonics are rated to run at full wattage 24/7.    Suit yourself. 

The corsair wasn't running at 750w though... should have only been consuming about 600w.

Seasonic makes their own PSUs, as well as PSUs for other major brands, and I'll trust a proven manufacturer (35+ years of business) over a 7 year old manufacturer any day

If you ever personally un-boxed a SeaSonic PSU.  you would never buy another brand, I wont.  It is like un-boxing and apple product.  you can tell/feel it was put together well.


The other 'last' point i will make.  when debugging problems with rigs, which if your a miner, you will have to do from time to time.  I never have to think "I wonder if the power is the issue"  !

yeah, PSU is the most important part.  if you buy a good one it'll last for half a decade or more.  i have an 850w thermaltake toughpower that i've had chugging along since.... probably 2006...

anyway, I've been happy w/ my seasonics... but also the aurum FSP gold, it's maybe $10 or $20 cheaper

I didn't want to wade in but I do think there is some wisdom here.  These are machines that "need" to run 24/7 for you to expect to pay them off and make a profit.  Spending a little more on one of the 3 core items in a mining rig (Motherboard, GPUs and PSU) is a wise investment over the long run.   I tried a PC & Power Cooling PSU from a recommendation but in the future I will be using only Seasonic because of it being rated in a 24/7 environment.  That is actually worth the extra $50 in the long run.
