Title: Bitcoin and OS stats Post by: flatfly on May 16, 2012, 05:33:47 PM What is the current % of Bitcoin users running windows, macOS and linux? Are there some data or charts available somewhere?
Title: Re: Bitcoin and OS stats Post by: Stephen Gornick on May 16, 2012, 05:50:32 PM About 80% windows, 10% Mac, 7% Linux.

Linux users might not download and use apt-get (or other distribution method, or from the github repo itself) instead, for instance. - http://sourceforge.net/projects/bitcoin/files/Bitcoin/stats/os That distribution doesn't vary greatly from overall usage: - http://www.netmarketshare.com/operating-system-market-share.aspx?qprid=9&qpcustomb=0 [Update: O/S information isn't sent by the client so there is no way to determine from user agent info what O/S. - http://en.bitcoin.it/wiki/BIP_0014 ] Title: Re: Bitcoin and OS stats Post by: flatfly on May 16, 2012, 07:49:28 PM Nice figures, thanks for that!
But now I'm wondering how many Linux users use apt-get and other methods rather than regular download... I am sure the % of Bitcoin users running Linux must be way higher than 10%. Title: Re: Bitcoin and OS stats Post by: jim618 on May 16, 2012, 08:43:42 PM If you have a look at the MultiBit download numbers here:
https://github.com/jim618/multibit/downloads (https://github.com/jim618/multibit/downloads) They are, very roughly: 60% Windows 20% Mac 20% Linux Title: Re: Bitcoin and OS stats Post by: etotheipi on May 17, 2012, 12:18:01 AM Based on the download counts on the Armory downloads page on Github (https://github.com/etotheipi/BitcoinArmory/downloads), the last release of Armory was about
70% Windows 30% Linux 0% Mac [not supported!] However, the stats are a little fuzzy because many users will actually install Armory on two different computers (online and offline), and many users download two different versions, maybe 3 or 4 if they get the versions wrong. I've been recommending using Ubuntu for the offline system, because it's very simple to setup a linux system that only runs one program, even if you're normally a windows user. That may be skewing the results a bit in favor of Linux (actually, does it matter? They are setting up Bitcoin software on a linux system, maybe they should count anyway...) Linux marketing share quadruples in less than 24 hours Stunning increases in Linux market share in Bitcoin have been reported. In less than 24 hours it has increased from 7%, to 20%, up to an impressive 30%. Total installs for Windows, Mac and Linux have increased from 97% (80 + 10 + 7) to a high estimate of 130% (80 + 20 + 30). The volume control in the cult movie 'This is Spinal Tap' famously went up to eleven (http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Up_to_eleven). Now with Bitcoin it goes all the way up to an ear-melting thirteen. <marketing spin off> :-) |
