Title: So ... why hasn't bitcoin been slashdotted again?
Post by: ripper234 on May 14, 2011, 05:46:05 AM
Dollar parity is news (http://slashdot.org/story/11/02/10/189246/Online-Only-Currency-BitCoin-Reaches-Dollar-Parity), but reaching $8.5 only three months later isn't?

Perhaps in a day or two when it reaches $10.

I'd say day or two, and we can include some of the new developments in the post such as the CIA's interest, the new stock market, Ubitex exchange, Bitdrop delivery service (actually there's nothing here for this one yet). And the growth in services available as well as general increase in trade.

its too easy.. make a buy, publish article, collect.

I say lets not try to rush things, they're moving too fast as it is.

Yeah, that's some interesting developments. Also GLBSE (I'm wondering if I should get into that ... maybe went they start offering bonds / fixed interest deposits. I don't want to risk my bitcoins)

Hacker News is like obsessed with bitcoin.  :D

But I would like until ten dollars before HN and slashdot get ahold of the parity news.

It's a good thing when it isn't news anymore.

HN has sooooo many BTC haters, for what the site is supposed to be they're really closed minded. I've been there pretty much from the start, I was there for the start of reddit too and don't really bother with that anymore.

Slashdot has already covered Bitcoin twice in recent months. It's intended to be a fairly balanced news source. I submitted the last story about parity and it got on the front page, but I wasn't intending to cover it again for a while. There are lots of projects in the world which would like free attention, after all.

Besides, many Slashdot readers likely know about Bitcoin already by now. Repeated coverage won't lead to large influxes of new users like before.

Also, most geeks are now aware of bitcoin. The vast majority of them don't care or believe it will fail so they don't want "yet another geeky news". The next target now should be broader audience publications (already started with Forbes) and more market opportunity.

Bitcoin is still not on Wired or Arstechnica's radar.

Correct. Dollar parity is news for nerds, because it shows that digital codes can be traded for real money. It's a symbolic milestone.

Any specific rate, such as $8.50 or $10, is interesting to Bitcoiners but not to Slashdot readers.

Pizza Parity might work though. Say $25.

Island parity would definitely make Slashdot.

So I just posted about Bitcoin to my Facebook status,

and I've got friends asking if my Facebook account has been hacked.

It seems Bitcoin has a "Too good to be true" problem.

Who reads slashdot anymore? http://www.alexa.com/siteinfo/slashdot.org (http://www.alexa.com/siteinfo/slashdot.org)

Reddit it where it's at. http://www.alexa.com/siteinfo/reddit.com (http://www.alexa.com/siteinfo/reddit.com) (there is quite an active sub-reddit (http://reddit.com/r/bitcoin) that is growing).

Or digg even. http://www.alexa.com/siteinfo/digg.com (http://www.alexa.com/siteinfo/digg.com) (hurl!)

Yep, somehow a lot of people perceive Bitcoin as a scam. They cannot put a finger to it but it must be a scam somehow. This is particularly disappointing, because it is in my best interest to shut up. The later others figure out about Bitcoin the better it is for me (more bitcoins are mined by the time others wake up). But yet I selflessly WAS trying to let my friends know about it.

I am about to say "screw you all narrow minded fools" and switch into silent mining mode. If this is my last post on this board do not be surprised.
They’ll regret their ignorance when they realize how much wealth they would’ve gained. :D
