Title: Open Source XPM (Primecoin) GPU Miner & Pool xpmforall.org
Post by: eXtremal on October 22, 2014, 08:54:25 PM
This is a new thread of fastest open source primecoin miner, product of merge
 - madMAx's miner: https://github.com/madMAx43v3r/xpmclient
 - xpmclminer: https://github.com/eXtremal-ik7/xpmminer

Old discussion is here: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=602292.0
Github repository: https://github.com/eXtremal-ik7/xpmclient
OS Supported: Windows, Linux
Current stable release (version 9.4.1): https://www.dropbox.com/s/2976f8tnhc6p4pj/xpmclient_v9.4.1.tar.gz?dl=0

Some results:
Radeon R9 290X @ 1000/1250 (stock) - 15.05 CPD
  R9 290X @ 1040/1500 - 15.5CPD
Radeon R9 290 @ 947/1250 (stock) - 13.6 CPD
Radeon R9 280X @ 1000/1250 (stock) -9.45 CPD
  R9 280X @ 1100/1500 - 10.4CPD

NVidia GeForce GTX 750Ti: 1.7x CPD
NVidia GeForce GTX 1070: 9.5 CPD

GPUs supported:
  - AMD GCN cards: R9 2xx, HD79xx, HD78xx, HD77xx; Catalyst versions 14.4 - 14.7 recommended. Don't use 14.12 and later drivers, it 60-70% slower than previous versions

Added in 10.0beta (miner not optimized for this cards, too slow):
  - AMD HD5xxx, HD6xxx cards
  - NVidia Maxwell cards: GeForce GTX 750Ti, GeForce GTX 9xx, GeForce Titan X

Pool mining:

Current miner protocol is compatible with original madMAx's pool (https://github.com/madMAx43v3r/xpmpool) Working instance of this pool available at http://xpmforall.org

To start mining:
 - Put your addess to config.txt:

Quote
server = "xpmforall.org";
port = "6666";

# Your XPM payout address
address = "AMgtSW8ge2mvqxaiWo11GqTKx6rQ2J57yA";

 - Configure your GPUs (edit corefreq, memfreq, powertune and fanspeed parameters)
 - Run xpmclient in Linux or xpmclient.exe in Windows
 - Put you address to 'Your Address' field on web site for monitoring workers and payments

Pool system: PPLNS (Pay Per Last N Shares); accounting procedure uses all your shares received during last hour. Pool fee is 4% now. Mining calculator included!
If you want to help decentralize primecoin mining and support open source, welcome!

Solo mining:

https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=602292.msg6881582#msg6881582
Quote
The solo-mining server code is at: https://github.com/madMAx43v3r/xpmserver

The solo-mining server binaries can be downloaded at:
For Windows: https://mega.co.nz/#!hRAmGRAQ!cbYlm-meXprzImw-vQ5COnBQiWtgPFXJeJtTs-041AI
For Linux: https://mega.co.nz/#!NZAHWC6b!FyeF6aKZ32KPs_Ns0NwZsEGaOWkNAlwfSz76hO-Dg_k
Note: The windows version crashes on shutdown, have not been able to fix this.

The binary zips also include a README.txt you should check out to get started.

EDIT: If you have dynamic ip: There is a bug somewhere in the bitcoin network code that can cause the server to loose all connections to the network after your external ip has changed. It will still show 8 or more connections but if you look in debug.log you will no longer see new blocks or transactions. In this case you need to restart the server.
The chance of this bug to happen is around 50%. So be careful, if your external ip changes and you don't check the server and the bug has happend you will produce 100% orphan blocks.

You have no installed libraries: czmq, zmq, gmp, protobuf, sodium. What OS do you use ?

I'm used ubuntu 13.10 and 14.04
this https://github.com/zeromq/czmq building and install

Code:
git clone git://github.com/jedisct1/libsodium.git
cd libsodium
./autogen.sh
./configure && make check
sudo make install
sudo ldconfig
cd ..

git clone git://github.com/zeromq/libzmq.git
cd libzmq
./autogen.sh
./configure && make check
sudo make install
sudo ldconfig
cd ..

git clone git://github.com/zeromq/czmq.git
cd czmq
./autogen.sh
./configure && make check
sudo make install
sudo ldconfig
cd ..

gmp and protobuf installed, but not work

Show cmake output after installing all required libraries.
gmp and protobuf can be installed using apt-get (sudo apt-get install libprotobuf-dev libgmp-dev).

Still need a lot of work, some cards crashing. I do not understand the parameters in config.txt
How to get away from this problem  ??? May be install OpenCL 2.0 driver http://support.amd.com/en-us/kb-articles/Pages/OpenCL2-Driver.aspx  ???

Not bad for R9 280X, what gpu/mem clocks ?

Still need a lot of work, some cards crashing. I do not understand the parameters in config.txt
I think, it's hardware problem, may be too much overclocking.
All parameters in config.txt are optimal now for difficulty 10.xxx (except GPU clocks :) ).

I think 11.39 cpd is not real for R9 280X. Look at "primes" value:
Quote
[GPU 0] T=78C A=95% E=0 primes=0.105011 fermat=1079239/sec cpd=15.20/day
GPU 0: core=1000MHz mem=1250MHz powertune=20 fanspeed=80
(ST/INV/DUP): 2695x 7ch(0/0/8) 305x 8ch(1/0/0) 23x 9ch(0/0/0) 4x 10ch(0/0/0)

~0.105000 is a normal value for miner version 9.4.1
R9 280X @ 1160/1500 must show ~10.9CPD.

Usually I just copy the wallet file and put it on a flash drive right from the directory, but when I try to restore the wallet with XPM I get wallet data corrupt, can't restore.

Copy and paste only wallet.dat file

That's all I copied.

I put the wallet.dat file on a flash drive, then deleted the one that XPM uses on the computer and then tried copying it back from the flash drive to the computer and after I did it gave me the corrupt, can't restore error.

windows, linux?
I've had similar issues before but solved them with persistence. It could be that you are using the wrong wallet.dat altogether (check the date the backup was made, it could help) and or it is in fact corrupt. If its worth it, then there are a few ways to get the keys. I suggest you try starting the client with the salvagewallet option and or try the wallet.dat in the newest official client first to see if you can salvage the keys or the wallet.dat itself might just work. This is to make sure its not isolated to the xpmserver if thats what you are running it on. If you are running it on the official client then do the reverse and try the xpmserver client.

The most important would be the powerdraw i think?
If 970 can get 9cpd+, it should be far more better than a 280x regarding power consumtion?
What about 750TI?
Considering expanding my farm if theese maxwell chips performs well powerwise...
From your experience with xpm mining, what gpu gives best performance/powerdrav ratio?
On amd, i think 290 gpus are the best ones, atleast what i have seen myself.
Thoughts on this?
We are building a datacentre, were we will be self suplied with power, so looking for the most power efective solution!

Power consumption of GTX970 is 150-160W, 280X up to 300W, if 970 will show same performance as 280X, yes, it will be better :)

I think undervolted R9 290X at ~850/1250MHz has best ratio (12.8CPD / ~200W power).

Payments starting after 2,5-3days mining (XPM need 3600 confirmations to mature).
You will begin receive payment at morning 12 Nov.

How can I use miner with amd 13.12 drivers

Thanks

Catalyst 13.12 not supported.
I can make patch for 13.12, but miner will be ~3% slower than 14.x version.

I'm using OpenCL with diffenent implementation for some functions.. and don't see a much speed difference between CUDA and OpenCL on same code.
NVidia Maxwell GPUs required different sieve implementation, if I create it, GTX970 will do 9-9,5CPD, GTX980 up to 11CPD, but it not easy :(

You should be right as you are the expert. My thinking is simply based on the fact Cuda being more "native" on Nvidia platform and miners using Cuda (e.g. ccminer) seem to be much faster than OpenCL miner on those X11/13/15 algorithm.

Assuming XPM uses bignum stuff - I'm pretty sure it does, but I've barely looked at the code - CUDA should provide a speedup, if done correctly. Might need PTX assembly, though.

my r9 290 mines away at 14.2 CPD (1000/1300)

I solved the throttling on 7950,seems it is hitting a wattage wall.

However at 1000/1550 the card gets only 5.3 CPD is this normal for a 7950, I thought it should be over 8 CPD

I have unfinished miner for NVidia 750Ti / GTX970 / GTX980, but performance too low compare to AMD GPUs (~6 CPD on GTX970 and ~7.5 CPD on GTX980, it's 1/2 of R9 290X speed).

1. Too high orphan rate (more than 10%) last 24 hours (ypool and solo mining have same problem, low difficulty and high network speed).
2. Calculator uses 30/1 10ch/11ch ratio. Now 5433/150=36.22, -20% pool luck.

I have checked payouts to other adresses, all have payouts ~calculator - 30% (some users have 170-190CPD and payouts 264-304 XPM). Now you mine 15 hours, but compare your payments with "XPM per day" value.

Quote
The paid starting to increasing, bug seems to be a little slowly.
Pool can't pay instantly with current block rate (1200 on xpmforall and 800 on ypool, normal rate is 1440 totally) can be 3-4 hours delay.

Hello. I'm using the 9.4.1 version of the miner. 8.1 Windows 64 Driver 14.12
I get 5.6 CPD to 280X (1100\1500) , config file by default. What am I doing wrong? Why such a low speed?

Use 14.4 - 14.7 drivers, 14.12 60% slower.
I will add this to first post.

14.7 driver set
280X = 7.5 CPD  :(
 How to get 10 CPD ?

If you use Windows, you can try set GPU, memory clock and powertune with MSI afterburner, or try different catalyst version (14.6, 14.4).

New version 9.4 with next speedup: https://www.dropbox.com/s/ny027u62vbeb2u5/xpmclient_v9.4.tar.gz?dl=0
Quote
Radeon R9 290X @ 1000/1250 (stock) - 14.9 CPD
  R9 290X @ 1040/1500 - 15.35CPD
Radeon R9 290 @ 947/1250 (stock) - 13.2 CPD
Radeon R9 280X @ 1000/1250 (stock) - 9.35 CPD
  R9 280X @ 1100/1500 - 10.25CPD

I have a R9 290 and have a few questions:

- Which driver will give me the best performance?

- Can I also use a CPU miner while running this program? My experience in the past is that CPU miners really cut into the performance of GPU miners. Any tips for this?

- I hear my fans turn down and then up when new work comes in. Is this normal? The Claymore miner doesn't seem to do this.

Thank you.

Catalyst 14.4 - 14.7.

You can try and post results here.

Normal time for getting new work equals ping to xpmforall.org:
Code:
Work received: height=1107707 diff=10.828171 latency=39ms
But sometimes pool answers to client with some delay:
Code:
Work received: height=1107696 diff=10.828003 latency=212ms
Latency more than 1 second is enough to decrease GPU temperature and fan speed. Use manual control for fan speed (line "fanspeed" in config.txt file).

gr8 work, works out of the box for 4x 7950 and 1x 290x (with 15.5 beta driver just fine 14CPD), would be nice if mining calculator had option to include the orphan rate in last 24h so ppl would not moan on low profit btw...

miner is good it looks like it trashing the GPU at the max, power usage looks even more then with scrypt mining or somewhere there

I used several AMD gpu's on my rigs. I only mine on new coins early on with them. I've heard a lot of good things on nvidia cards for mining too.

Yes, for other pools (ypool, etc). Difficulty too high for CPU mining now.

Miner does not work

I think you use Catalyst 13.x, install 14.4 drivers.

I have a problem, I connect their rigs to your pool.
But only one bullet shows up to 2 or rigs. The rest is not visible in the statistics ...

  program miners working on drilling rigs. Shows accepted and CPD.
What could be the problem?
Please help ... And then on ypool payment I do not like ...

Question: so in the config file it has "-1" as meaning don't change for the corefreq, etc. What if I want to change these? What value do I add? I tried changing the corefreq in Afterburner, but it shows up lower when the program starts.

Voltage gpu and mem clock can be changed from AB and from config. Just don`t put some strange frequency in config.txt like 750 mhz for mem it will raise memory to max. 1600 mhz in my case, Asus 280x dc2t

Because a blockchain synchronization problem when pool node works a long time with a very high block rate. Without restarting other miners (such as ypool) get too much orphans it's not good for primecoin network.
With periodic restarting your workers lost about 0,1% XPM / day, not much? :)

I don't know speed limit of 750Ti and other cards, I'll try find it. It's easy to make 2+ CPD with 750Ti (now only 1.75), I'll release new version with optimizations for NVidia soon.

Can you explain with is different with this build? I tried it and I'm getting slower performance than with the previous version. I'm running 14.4 drivers. Thanks.
What GPU you use and how much CPD you see?
Can you run benchmarks (xpmclient -b) with versions 9.4.1 and 10.0?

GeForce GTX 750Ti results:
Quote
[GPU 0] T=-1C A=-1% E=0 primes=0.108085 fermat=92557/sec cpd=1.74/day
(ST/INV/DUP): 1369x 7ch(29/0/7) 154x 8ch(3/0/0) 13x 9ch(0/0/0) 3x 10ch(1/0/0)

XPM mining with 750Ti can be profitable after optimizations, if performance reaches 4+ CPD.. I think, it possible :)

So to answer your question, I'm running an R9 290. I was getting about 9 CPD with the new version and the older version I'm getting about 14 CPD. (I know this isn't the benchmark you were looking for but I'm away from my computer.) Again, I'm running the 14.4 drivers.

What performance are you seeing with an R9 290? It the performance lower because I'm using older drivers? If so, which version would you recommend?

Thanks!

Quote

XPM mining with 750Ti can be profitable after optimizations, if performance reaches 4+ CPD.. I think, it possible :)
Any suggestions about 970/980 performance after optimizations?

Got some weird issue with drivers,
WARNING: Linking two modules of different data layouts!
WARNING: Linking two modules of different target triples: 'amdil64-pc-unknown-am
dopencl' and 'amdil-pc-unknown-amdopencl'

Now this wouldn't be unexpected if i had say changed the driver version since the last time i ran the miner (which i haven't)
So drivers are the same 14.4 modded (so i can run 5 cards) but now they throw this error at the start and no longer perform at 9.4 cpd but instead 6 cpd what in the world could cause this???

Edit: This is happening on 2 rigs both previously working and without any change to drivers; one has 3 x 280x and running 14.7 rc3 the other 5 x 280x 14.4 modded drivers. On the 3x 280x rig i ran amd cleanup utility to remove drivers and re-installed 14.7rc3 but i still get the same warning and speed is only 6cpd. On the 5x 280x rig i ran amd cleanup and re-installed 14.4 modded drivers still get same warning and same 6 cpd. #mindfuck!

Edit2: Simple solution, delete kernel.bin forcing it to recompile everything works again.
It seems the average cpd is lower after recompiling kernel.bin 8.5 cpd instead of 9.4 cpd

With some other miners it is possible to put the opencl files into the folder with the miner and prevent the need to change drivers, is this something you would consider doing? It would be extremely useful in particular for rigs that need to use modded drivers.

After 2-3 days I'll release new beta version with optimizations for all NV cards.

Quote from: CoffeeCat
So to answer your question, I'm running an R9 290. I was getting about 9 CPD with the new version and the older version I'm getting about 14 CPD.
Use stable 9.4.1 version for AMD cards, 10.0beta don't have any AMD optimizations.
My tests says that 10.0beta have same speed as 9.4.1 on Linux/catalyst 14.4  and Windows/catalyst 14.6.

The actual driver files like amd_opencl32.dll etc, for example https://www.dropbox.com/s/wb7jihr5ibe5zu7/14.9cl.rar?dl=0 With some miners it's possible to place these in the dir with the miner so you can use different drivers without the need to install new ones.

Also 8.5CPD with both 14.4 modded and 14.7rc3

So I'm assuming that long latency times can drop your earnings as the GPU goes for periods without getting work. Is there any way to improve this? It seems like it happens a lot. Do another pools have this problem?

High latency is a problem of original primecoind application. I have already tried to fix it, current pool version after optimizations works better, but not ideal :(

Ok, I'll try test different versions of drivers.
Also you can try use different OS, Linux (and Windows 8.1?) does not require modded drivers for run 5+ GPUs.

I'm trying to understand why it worked perfectly before but now gives error even though I made no changes to drivers. Also why recompiling kernel.bin removes error but does not give same speed as precompiled kernel.bin? I notice a slight size difference in newly compiled kernel.bin vs precompiled one. If it helps here is a link to the newly compiled kernel.bin https://www.dropbox.com/s/qlbi7z815dnbhly/kernel.bin?dl=0
For what its worth Claymore xpm miner also gives same error.

Unfortunately, i needed to hack the xpmclient.cpp file to remove the test after the line 1251 about incompatible configuration :
Code:
        config_t config = miner->getConfig();
        /*
        if (config.TARGET != clKernelTarget ||

          printf("Please remove kernel.bin file and restart miner\n");
          exit(1);
        }
        */

I don't know exactly what is bad in this test, but after i tried to put in config.txt file same values as found in gpu/config.cl without success, i tried to remove the test and... now, it's ok ;-)

The values i have in my config.txt :

I hope that this post could enhance this great project !

I tried R9 Nano via this miner ~ 9.5 - 10 CPD.

With Claymore it doesn't mine, tried different Opencls. I thinks it's because he abandoned his project and don't update his miner anymore

R9 270 ~ 5,4 CPD (950/1400) Downvolted to 1,0v

Hello!
I'm mining on HD 7850 (it's about 4.7 CPD).

Hello, qqqq!
I mean exactly R7. Is it supported with this miner?

Hi - Yes it is supported.
I mine with such card R7 260X and it gave me about 3,4 CPD

hmm.. 3.4 CPD is very small. I thought that it would be the same as hd7850 (4.7 CPD).

Yes it is small - normally R7 260X is 1/3 of R9 280X. I try it for a lot of algorithms X11, X13, Eterum and gives around 1/3.  Only for quark gives a little bit more than 1/3 of R9 280X

I am trying to compare the characteristics of some cards, but do not understand what is crucial. Core frequency? At the moment I only understood that the frequency of memory and amount of memory are not very important.

The 260X is effectively a 7790 (Bonaire core) with 892SP and only a 128bit bus.

OTOH, the 265 is a what amounts to a 7830, or R9 270LE.  It is a Pitcairn class chip with a 256bit bus and 1024SP.  Frankly put, the 265 has no business being labeled as a R7 class chip and/or in 26x nomenclature.

If you think back to the 5xxx series, the 265 is pretty much the 5830 where your R7 260/260X chips are the 5750/5770 and your R9 270/270Xs are the 5850/5870.

So, your results are inline with expectations given the 265's bump in hardware resources over the 260X.

Core frequency and FP64 is very important. As you can see on this http://www.anandtech.com/show/9387/amd-radeon-300-series/2
R9 380 is similar to R9 280 except it has weaker FP64. R9 380 has 1/16FP64 and R9 280 has 1/4FP64.
R9 380 is obviously slower for mining XPM but it is good for ETH.

R9 380 1100/1500 ~6.8 15.11
Any way to run 380 on 14.x drivers? I think it will be faster, because when I put it first time to rig with 7950 and 14.x drivers. I saw 380 hashing 7+ cpd in stock. But then driver auto updated to 15.12 and I was unable to run 380 on 14 drivers anymore.

I'm also very interested how mach will push R9 390? Somebody have this info?

did that, crash after kernel compiling. but if i disable 380 card in config( i have 290x and 380 in one system) miner start and work for some time, but later crash again. also with 15.7.1 i have only 10cpd from 290x

I wouldn't worry that much, miners are hammering this coin hard due to the higher profits and it will be on par with the rest very soon.  Profits for 2 290s I have on this have dropped $2 a day in a short amount of time.

Some optimizations are possible, may be 15-20%, but ethereum mining still more profitable on RX480.

Yes fix is a needed thing for XPM and Pascal, some 25CPD on GTX 1070 would be best and disired fix  8)

The benchmark error more or less immportant

Without this benchmark I can't say how much CPD can do Pascal GTX1070 & 1080 GPUs :)
When I get access to one of these cards, I can fix benchmark and get some info.

I know you are quite busy at coinsforall now - but can I ask you to check XPM address:

there are some 4+ XPM there - please make manual cash out!
Thanks

Its not useless, its actually uncovered quite a few new, previously unknown prime chains. Plus, its actually still profitable to mine!

If ADL is working with your drivers, try 20.

Polaris too slow in XPM mining.. using GCN assembly can give about +5-10% on this GPUs, but it's not easy.

I had been mining Primecoin for a while up until I lost the space for my rigs about a year ago.   I now have a place that I can set them up again.
I currently use r9-270s (4 cpd) and 280s(6 cpd)
Anyway, I have two questions.   What are the preferred GPUs for Primecoin mining now, and is there any reason to use coinsforall over xpmforall?

Preferred GPUs is Hawaii - R9 290(X)/390(X). Other GPUs also can be profitable on XPM rather than ETH and others, need use calculator to check them.
If you use coinsforall you can set payment threshold, do manual payments.. and no any lags on website.

xpmforall (coinsforall too) XPM payments work properly last 2 years.. unlike zec pool on startup :)
Sometimes pool can delay payment up to 4-5 hours, not more.

Hello,

Are there any good XPM pools out their that accept cloud like nicehash?

I did some search but could not find much info.

I found http://coinsforall.io/#!/coin/XPM and http://xpmforall.org/

but could not find proper settings to use.

Many Thanks.

16.3.2 not suitable for XPM mining, try old Catalyst 14.6 driver.

All I changed in the config.txt is:

server = "coinsforall.io";
# server = "xpmforall.org";
port = "6666";
# Your XPM payout address
address = "....your XPM address here....";

on the coinsforall.io site, the same address in the settings and set the minimal payout to whatever you want.  I have mine at 10 XPM.  If you ever want to switch to xpmforall.org, just move the hash (#) from the one server = line to the other.

I do have stability problems with my nvidia cards.   I run them at the stock clock speed, but the miner still crashes a few times a day.  To take care of that I use the windows scheduler to start the miner every 10 minutes and to kill the previous task if it is still running.  I need to keep an eye on it in the task manager, because every now and then I get two tasks running and my cpd rate is halved.  All I do is kill one of the tasks and everything goes back to normal.
